SCHOOL HISTORY In a little log cabin about one-half mile northwest of town, the pioneers of Granite Falls received their schooling. Here school was held for two terms. In 1889, with the aid of the community, a second school house was erected. It stood on the northeast corner of the lot on which the present school building stands. It was built of split cedar logs, and at this time was given the title of School District No. 2!. Later, school was held in the Union Hall, which was also a log building. In the meantime a much larger building was being constructed. A portion of this is our present Town Hall. In 1910, school was held in the Odd Fellows Hall as the school had outgrown the rest of the school buildings. About this time a two-story brick building was constructed, which is our present school house. This was our first year of High School work. The building cost $20,000.00. The Woodman Hall was rented during the winters by the Student Body for athletics, in 1920, ten years after the building of the school house. The school had so increased that a gymnasium was necessary. A building well equipped was bui't across from the school house, costing $14,000. The Departments of Science, Home Economics, and Manual Training have been in the High School since the first few years of the high school’s life. A large lunch room was added to the Home Economics room last year. The Manual Training room, because of the increased enrollment, was forced to move to another building. The Art Department was in the high school one year. It was here- tofore taught under the Manual Training and Home Economics depart- ments. The Commercial department has almost completed its fourth year of work. The department includes a private room for the typewriting stu- dents and a large room for the book-keeping students and there is a promise of a still larger enrollment in the Commercial departments next year which will necessitate still bigger and more elaborate facilities for taking care of the students.
