Hzstory of the Semor Class of 1938
On September 14 1927 Mrs Raborn s room 1n the Pr1mary Depart
ment of Grand Sal1ne School looked l1ke a day nursery for xt was
crowded wlth chlldren some cllngmg t1m1dly to thelr mother s hands
and others assertlng thelr superlorlty by comlng alone to enroll for the
flrst t1me Of th1S group of beg1nners only fourteen boys and glrls are
1n the Senlor Class of 1938 These fourteen are Tommy Barber Robert
Bell Jessle D Carter Mary Davldson Helen Dlxon T S DIXOH Mar
ga1et Glover Ruth Ann Hendley Ruth Land Dorothy L e e Cordell
Smlth Ava Loulse Thompson Neal MOFTIS and LeJeune Attklsson
The small army soon began to dr1ll golng through the paces wxth Mrs
Raborn as general After n1ne months of hard drllllng the army was
moved 1nto the second grade Wlth M1 ss Trudle Edwards and Mrs McLa1n
as generals A new sold1er Odell Null fell 1n the ranks
The two ranks were then promoted to the thlrd grade where MISS Sal
l1e Beavers and M1ss TFGSSIG Edwards took charge as generals Here B11
l1e Ruth George and Helen Ph1ll1ps were transferred from another army
to that of the Grand Sallne Army Here also were lost some of the best
sold1ers of the ranks
Under the head generals M1ss Sarah Pendleton and Mrs Jul1a Ph1ll1ps
the two ranks advanced to the fourth grade a more progresslve grade
At th1s polnt the ranks were enlarged by the presence of Truman Adklns
Buddy Boyles AIVIS Brawner Brady Swaln and Dorothy Kllburn
In the flfth grade the two ranks Jolned forces under the new general
whlle the others were promoted to a hlgher grade
The army advanclng closer to the front moved forward to the sixth
grade Here under the leadershlp of Mrs Mary Darnell a general two
more sold1ers enllsted They were Dorothy Faye Balley and Nell Wool
The army reached the half polnt mark of the front wlth Mrs Head as
general The new soldlers who 10111 ed the armv at th1s polnt were Harles
Grant and Jun1or Jacobs Others Jomed but dropped out before the end
of the term
The sold1ers bravely marched forward mto the strange land of hlgh
school wlth M1ss James and J W Johnson as generals Those that
Jolned at thls tlme were Maxlne Brown Adelle LaPrade Mllford Mllks
DOIIS Perry and Paullne Parker Here they were drllled hard A few
of the sold1ers were left behlnd whlle others plunged deeply 1nto thelr
Work so that they mlght advance forward to reach the front
St1ll struggllng to reach thelr destlnatlon the young sold1ers moved
bravely onward 1nto the nlnth grade wlth elght years of c o n t 1 n u o u s
dr1ll1ng Wlth MISS O Neal and Mr J W Johnson as generals the
army was lncreased bv sold1ers Dorothy Del Balley Ruby Nell Buchanan
Marlln Casey Jack Carpenter Ruby Lee Crume Sarah Ford Adelle
