THE YEAR FOOTBALL The vear of 1924 25 brought to the Grand Junctron Hrgh School the most successful athletrc season that the school has ever known Confronted from the frrst wrth only green rnaterral to burld hrs teams on Coach Holt rn every case burlt up squads whrch although they drd not glean all the charrrpronshrps rn srght at least made others work to get them The Trger Football team thrs year was lrke every team composed of green men rt was sonrew hat erratrc After gettrng off wrth a poor start the team was Just begrnnrng to lrrt therr strrde when all sorts of mrsfortunes began to pop up Injurres srckness and low grades all com brned managed to slow them up some but they kept on gorng Towards the last of the season they lrrt er up and showed therr true abrlrty walkrng on everythrng rn srght Montrose took the champronshrp wrth only one loss Gunnrson was second rn the conference and the Trgers were thrrd rn the frnal standrngs t ecrl Cannell the Trger captarn was undoubtedly the greatest back rn the conference Hubert Gallagher at rrglrt end was another outstandrng star and he also at tarned the unrqrre drstrnctron of playrng every mrnute of everv game or the season BASKETBALL VVrth only one letter man left from the preyrous year the Trger Basketball team went through the longest schedule of any team on the slope wrth only two losses and both of these on forergn floors However these two losses cost them the rrght to represent thrs drvrsron of thrs year was exceptronally long consrstrng of twelve conference and srx practrce games Frurta represented thrs dryrsron brrt was elrmrnated early rn the meet Gun rrrson won the tourrrarrrent and the champronslrrp Belt Johnson Trger captarn and star forward was out of the garne for a great part of the season on account of rrrjurres 'lhrs handrcapped the team severely Perhaps the best feature of the season was the fact that from tlrrrty to frfty candrdates for the team were out the frrll season As rrrost of these are lower class men the prospects for future clrarnprorrslrrp teams are exceeclrngly brrglrt CHRLSfBASKETBALL The Grrls Basketball team lrke the Boys w 'rs lrarrdr capped by the lack of sersoned players and bv rngurres Nevertheless they came through a hard schedule rn frne shape placrrrg thrrd rn thrs drvrsron of the conference The Frurta girls represented thrs drvrsron at the Delta Tournament but lrke the Frurta boys were elrmrnated early The Delta grrls won the champronshrp Pat Hall the Trgress captarn was easrly the out standrng player of the team and w as regarded by all as one of the best forwards rn the conference Mabel Ward at runnrng center and Harrret Marshall at guard also play ed stellar games throughout the season Prospects for a wrnrrrng team next year are excep tronal wrth frve letter grrls and wrth a larger number of the entrre squad back As thrs rs the only branch of Hrgh School athletrcs rn whrch grrls may partrcrpate the rnterest next year rn basketball should be great rf the school at last acqurres the long sought gynrnasrum TRACK The clrnrax of the whole year came when the Trger Track team won the VS estern Slope Track Meet for the tlrrrd successrve t1me Thrs vrctory gave us permanent possessron of the two large three year crrns over whrch the sever rl sc lrools on the slope have brttlecl for so nrany years In aclclrtrorr to garnrng perrrrarrent possessron of the two large cups the Trgers won the relay cup and erght trrst place medals Thrs rs a larger nurrber of frrsts than any team has ever taken before at thrs meet T C rand Junctron also went the honor of the outstandrng trrn clrpped more than ten seconds off hrs last years record rn the rnrle run settrng a new record of 4 47 flat for the drstance He made another frne performance when he won the half nrrle three seconds short of a new record Due to the gerrerosrty of local busrness nren we w ere rble to send three rrren to the State Track Meet at Boul der There Qaurrclers rrrade an even better record wrn rrrrrg the nrrle and breakrng the state record Hrs trme w as 4 4l flat w lrrc lr betterecl the former record by more thrrr tour seconds Iyle Jones took seconcl rn the lrrgh hurdles rt tlrrs rrreet brrrrgrng the Trgers score up to a. total of erglrt porrrts wlrrch grye us sey errtlr plrce rn the rrreet tecrl tarrrrell the thlrcl trrarrcl Junctron entry ed I plrce 'llrrs record rs rerrrrrkfrble when one rrsrclc rs sclrc y plrcccl rlrerd of loc rl terrrr lrrcl fronr erglrteerr to twentv rrrerr entered rn the rrrcct rrrcl tlrrr there were rborrt 4r0 athletes com pctrrrg A, y 4 . . . , V V - ' - I ' ' : . r , V .
