Probably the most looked foryx 1rd to ex ent of the school year for the girls 15
the Gym Shoyx which was given 'Vlay 3 IU the Gymnasium This shoyx was
dlrected by Frances Gllbert and included almost every girl in school The success
of the show not only gave a thrill to the girls who were in it but also acted as a
finlshlng touch to the year s gym work
The first part of the show consisted of marchmg club and vnand drills tumbling
and pyramid building To manv people the m1rch1ng dr1ll was the most enjoy
able part of the show The great number of girls moving rhythmically about on
the floor produced a beautiful effect For clubs the room was darkened and the
luminous clubs all swinging together produced a most beautlful effect The wand
drill was also greatly enjoyed but undoubtedly the most outstanding feature of
this d1v1s1on was the tumbling and pyramid bulldmg
Little Red Rldmg Hood a dancmg play was the second d1v1s1on of the show
ln this the g1rls were beautifully costumed and played the1r parts well ln the
first scene Little Red Rldlng Hood was walking through the forest She grew
t1red and lay down to sleep While she slept the flowers v1olets roses and a
marigold came and danced for her She was wakened as the wolf entered saw her
and asked her where she was going Little Red Riding Hood told the wolf she was
gomg to her grandmothers house to take her somethmg to eat The wolf de
clded he would take a short cut through the woods and arrive at the grandmother s
house first Little Red R1d1ng Hood tarrled awhile and danced in the woods
In the second scene the wolf was IH the grandmother s bed pretending to be the
grandmother Little Red Riding Hood didn t know and thought it rather strange
so she asked the wolf many questions concerning his long ears large eyes and big
teeth just as the wolf Jumped out of bed to eat L1ttle Red Riding Hood he
heard someone whlstllng lt proved to be Red Riding Hoods father and four
other woodcutters who stopped in to see the grandmother They killed the wolf
and upon finding the grandmother safe and sound they all entered into a gay tap
The third part took us back to China This was the Chmese fantasy consisting
of two dances the Chmese Lantern Dance in whlch nme girls danced with lighted
lanterns and the Chlnese Love Story acted by three glrls ln these dances the
girls were delightfully costumed in the dress of the Orient
A Hollday in Russia completed the Gym Show This was a small ballet the
scene of whlch opened 1n a Russlan village Boys and girls were dancmg around
while a Jovlal old man dozed and occaslonally struck at a spider t1ckl1ng his nose
The merrymakers woke hlm and danced around him The Hnale found them all
dancing in true Russlan folk style
The Gym Show w1ll long be remembered by those who saw lt and by those who
participated therein as one of the outstanding events of the year

PRAYER OF A SPORTSMAN
Dear Lord, in the battle that goes on through life,
I ask but a field that is fair,
A chance that is equal with all in the strife,
A courage to strive and to dare, K
And if I should win, let it be by the code,
With my faith and by honor held high,
And if I should lose, let me stand by the road,
And cheer as the winners go by!
And Lord, may my shouts be ungrudging and clear,
A tribute that comes from the heart,
And let me not cherish a snarl or a sneer,
Or play any sniveling part,
Let me say, "There they ride on whom laurel's bestowed
Since they played the game better than I",
Let me stand with a smile by the side of the road,
And cheer as the winners go by!
So grant me to conquer, if conquer I can,
By proving my worth in the fray,
But teach me to lose like a regular man,
And not like a craven, I pray.
Let me take 017' my hat to the warriors who strode
To victory splendid and high,
Yes, teach me to stand by the side of the road,
And cheer as the winners go by!
