J. Regier was necessary 1n arrangmg an Not only practice but m itinerary. Here the A bassadors Quartet is visiting with J.J. Lots of our musical groups went out to perform at various func- tions, both in the near Omaha vicinity and in more distant loca tions. Every group had to spend hours in the practice rooms, as the Messengers of Life Quartet is doing here. The deans would be most upset if the sign-out procedure wouldn't be completed. This is the Trumpet Trio, satisfying Miss Madsen. Grace owned a '57 Ford station wagon this year. The Melody of Life Trio, as well as the other groups, made use of the station wagon to get to their engage- ments. JT, , , 1.1.3 Trips were more than just driving and eating, though. The Christian Heralds performed in many churches similar to this one. SO many weekend trips involved coming back home to Grace late at night, or maybe early in the moming. Mr. Krehbiel probably didn't enjoy getting out of bed, b at least he was kind enough to unlock the door for the Jubilaires ut Trio so that they could go to bed, and take up another day of class- work in a few hours. A memory common to musical groups is the pleasure of visiting in homes after a program. The Cru- saders, too, enjoyed a lunch and fellowship after a performance. .4 The Music department offers pri- vate lessons in voice, piano, and organ. 59 Darlene Long practicing her piano lesson. Mrs. Wischmeier giving Janie Wallace her voice lesson. Eunice Huebert performing at a student recital. F17 I- P or sU mi x M B ?'wr W r- , iv w lm' Wav 0? 1 mi 1. M wi v-14, x . ' A-- fi On September 6 the faculty gave the new students a welcoming re- ception. . . . the students visited one another's dormitories in a regular open house. Life at Grace Bible Institute in 1958-59 seemed to be an endless cycle of activity. . . . and a few weeks later Mr. W. A. Regier was the faculty ad- viser to the Student Body Association. 65 The ones at the head of much of this activity were the officers of the Student Body Association, popularly known as the SBA Committee. This committee ar- ranged many of the activities of the year, and they also appointed some of the committees whose pictures appear in the next few pages of this CHARIS. The SBA Committee met regularly at seven in the morning on Wednesday to take care of their business. Le- land Flickinger was the president of the Student Body Association, with Darrell Fast as vice -president Naoma Wiens as secretary, and Gladyce Bixel as treasurer. Q1 lf' mf ' . g ai. , - L. Q W Like other college -age students, Grace students enjoyed parks and being excused from classes--and two happy days, one each semes- ter, combined these pleasures. The entire Grace family went to Elmwood Park on Wednesday, September 24, where games, mud, sunshine, hot dogs, chicken, ants, sunburns, dates, and devotions in the amphitheater were put to- gether in a combination called the fall picnic. Basketball games and socials con- tributed to the local social scene, as well as to the background con- versation, at various times during the year. .I s ki . v v I ' 'S . . L 1 X vi W -1'-5a bi Not all was social life, thoughg most stu- dents enrolled with a weekly load of twelve, fourteen, and even a few students reported nineteen hours. Miss Dorothy Dietz in the book store was always eager to exchange books, paper, pencils, and syllabi for fifteen cents, please, or maybe at registration time for twenty-two dollars and sixty-three cents, please. The faculty also had occasional unguarded moments when THEY relaxed. Everybody at Grace did some kind of practical work every week. The students were given assignments which had to be fulfilled regularly. Directing the practical work was Mr. W. A. Regier, with June Hoch- stettler as his secretary. This is what you might have seen on Monday mornings, any time from before sunrise on. Students crowded into this hall once a week to fill out reports. 1172- f-s Y ' 'Q 1 .A wc HUHE Assignments took the students to various places. Some went to the Rescue Mission . . . or to Rest Homes. 1 l X 5 One group did follow up. Other students did their practical work in Chi1dren's Missions and jails. l 69 You might inadvertently have heard some students glibly talk about an MMF chapel, or an MMF program some Friday night. The initial letters IM, M. F. refer to a missionary organization which every student automatically belonged to--the Macedonian Missionary Fellowship. This association Among the activities of the MMF were contribu- tions to the support of alumni missionaries by means of pledges and offerings . . . had Ray Banner as president this year, with Russell Mueller as vice president, Lucene Hard er as secretary, and Agnes Buhler as treasurer. Mr. Frank Harder was the advisor to this organization. sponsorship of twelve prayer bands on Friday mornings . . . and occasional panels or other functions for Friday evening pro- grams. The Singspiration committee planned for a number of informal times of group singing as well as for a few vesper services on Sun- day afternoons. The members of the committee were Al Busenitz,. Anna Beth Unruh, Linda Underhill, Mr. Wischmeier, and Ron Sperling committee, with the other members being Marlene Ruth, Delano Hofer, Lucille Entz, Doris Classen, Palmer Hohm, and Noel Willems. The Deans, Miss Madsen and Mr. Reiland, were the advisers. Ron Hiebner and Duane Bixel, as head of the recreation committee, were responsible for the planning of socials and recreational activities. Their committee members were Quindel King, Janie Wallace, Jim Peters, Mercy Sampson, Eugene Busenitz, Pat Flaming, Carolyn Dickerson, LaVonne Wal- ter, Virgil Brandt, Norma Wienss, Ed Sce- bold, Diane Blowers, and Rodney Goertzen. Faculty advisers were Mr. Jones and Mr. Tschetter. We even had a cheer-up com- mittee at Grace. Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Friesen, Ruth Koehn, and Arnie Hamill were the committee, they were the ones who visited the sick and afflicted with cheerful words and sometimes with extra books or magazines. Posters were drawn up by a special committee, consisting of Deanna Johnson, Karlene Cast, John Murray, Elaine Schroeder, Jim Gerhart, Marlene Ruth, and Beverly Asa. A student paper known as the Student Streamer made sporadic appear- ances during the year, with a variety of com- ments, news, and editor- ializing on the current scene. John Safford and Sharon Blowers edited the paper, with Lorna Rempel helping as assistant editor. After mid-term exams fthat is, in late October and mid-March when the semesters were half overj the classes were dismissed for one week. In the spring Grace had a Mission- ary Conference in keeping with a tradition as old as the school. During the last week in October Grace had a Bible Conference emphasizing pastoral work. i There is an old building on Eighth Street next to the boys' dormitory. It is said that this building was at various times a stable, a classroom, and a library. In 1959 it was known as the Student Center. Students went there for pingpong games, physical exercise, and even for socials. They also went to the snack shop for coffee breaks between classes, for breakfasts missed because of dis- regarded alarm clocks, and for the general atmosphere of relaxation. 76 The Singspiration Committee arranged for regular musical enter- tainment at Friday evening dinners Social experiences were obtained variously in the dormitories or on dates . . Even married students were not altogether left out! 77 t it' nf' The spring banquet was planned by a committee with Roland Loewen as chairman, and Delano Hofer, Marlene Ruth, and Dorothy Nord- quist also on the committee. Senior Recitalists, 1958 The devotional committee is a guide to our prayer life. The reception committee, composed of Ivan 1-Iunsinger, Lois Peters, Bev- erly Asa, and Marvin Dick helped with the youth conference in the spring, pictured on the opposite page. High school students from throughout the area were invited to Omaha to visit Grace Bible Institute in order to see the school and to gain spiritual and social benefits from contacts with the special speakers and the student body.
