GRACE 1979 Grace Theological Seminary — Winona Lake, Indiana SERVANTS PREPARING TO PRODUCE SERVANTS SERVANTS And the things you entrust to reliable _.. to prepare God’s have heard me say in men who will also be people for works of the presence of qualified to teach service, so that the many witnesses others. 2 Tim. 2:2 body of Christ may be built up. Eph. 4:12 DEDICATION Dr. Charles R. Smith We dedicate the 1978-79 Grace Theological Seminary yearbook to the ''anti-gap chap.'' He frequently talks about baloney, billy goats and bis- cuits. He once REPORTEDLY dined with a ''chief big-shot angel'' at a local ''steak-joint ' to discuss the merits of infralapsarianism and supraelection- isino When shes is amazed mor ssurprised: SWANEE!!'' is often his only response. Dr. Charles R. Smith — we honor you as a godly scholar who consis- tently walks in the way commanded by Paul the apostle. Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage — with great patience and careful instruction. — 2 Timothy 4:2 INTRODUCTION Servants ... Consider it, if you will, a church library. A seminary, for all its independent existence, cannot supplant the local church as the place of teaching. Rather, itis a repository of information and experience, a storehouse existing to serve the local church. As a library supplies data not found elsewhere, so the seminary teachers supply the results of their special studies and experiences to members of the local church who seek to further, in special ways, the work of therchuxech, meet HHH iH APU = 3 4 Ht nt Sina iat : x Sartell 4s is ... preparing servants I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching.... Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life. — Proverbs 4:2,13 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful ... so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. — 2 Timothy 3:16,17 Top right: Jim Colledge, Charles Morrisey, Michael Clapham. Fourth row: Chaplain Jenkins speaking in chapel; a World Missions Fellowship prayer band. _.. to produce servants Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. — Matthew 28:19, 20 Executing this command takes a number of forms. Some are more conventional, traditional (and honored both by tradition and by the Word of God) ... BAPTIZING, top left: Daryle Emch. TEACHING: Next row: Al Valentine; Bob Gray. Third row: Daryle Emch; Tom Moorhouse to produce servants ... while others are less conventional, or not conventional at all. Yet they all have the same purpose — they are avenues whereby members of the local church can bring people to baptism and teach them. Foundations of Biblical “= gigntpicance Recent student alumni writings include books, shown here, by David Ni- cholas, David Hocking, Kenneth Gangel, George Zeller, Paul Lee Tan, and David Jeremiah. Books are also published by Franklin Choate (Alpha Publica- tions) and by James Eisen- braun (Eisenbrauns). Fac- ulty writings include works by Dr. Whitcomb, Dr. Kent, Dr. Davis, and Prof. Mayhue. Above: Brian Roseborough trains a Timothy Team, a squad of college- and seminary-age people who in turn train youth in an area Grace Brethren church to serve actively in that church. This book is offered as a reminder both of those at Grace who prepare and of those who are being prepared. Please use it to remember them and to pray for them, so that through-them active disciples might be added to the church of Jesus Christ. At left: Collegian Les Lofquist and Paul Miller of Indiana University, who with Dr. Boyer has produced Project GRAMCORD. By comparing GRAMCORD data (below), computers compile lists of similar gram- matical constructions in the New Testament (a ''grammatical concor- dance''), thus advancing our knowledge of Koine Greek syntax and making our exegesis more accurate. tu ttt ft eo ee Ww oc kw eS Te +e POTEITAT VERS ee EIS” Par Aeon ET Leo OTKODOMYN @e EAUTOU) ee FN 3 AGAPJ eeeetetes . sseeSeeees : seset eves: ee “MIKETE e UMASS e PERT ATEIN eee er Above: Bill Stroup leads a Bible memorization course. FACULTY But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it. — 2 Timothy 3:14 He also told them this parable: ''Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? Mayhue Advisor Michael Spence Editor 56 Special thanks are due: To Mr. Cramer and the Development Department, for their help in a gathering ideas and in finding special photographs. To Prof. Myron Yeager of Grace College, who was aoe ee with support and advice from his yearbook experience. _ To Dr. Whitcomb, by whose courtesy the Kyle- Albright Expedition pictures appear. To Ted Witmer, not only for taking photographs but also for the discus - sions that helped to shape this book. To Bill Stroup, Doug Courter, and Jon Rumley, who ably wielded their cameras at graduation and retreat. To Roemer McPhee, who piloted an unforgettable venture into aerial photography. - To Howard Downing, for his editorial example, for past confidence, and maybe for a photo or two. To all those pictured herein, for their graciousness in willingly being photographed . (Rarely is it easy to believe the cameraman is actually on your side! ) Especially to Prof. Mayhue — pastor, advisor, friend, a general purpose rascal — who, besides writing the Dedication, provided the principles, authority, ‘and constant encouragement by which work on this project was scheduled and completed. And most importantly to the Lord Jesus Christ, under whose aegis allthis took place, and by whose sovereign plan the editor learned and the book saw print. May you who read go on to know better His glories. All Scripture quotations (including 2 Peter 3:18 below) are from the Holy Bible: New International Version.
