Ordained to the Brethren ministry in May, 1934, he became the pastor of the Second Brethren Church of Los Angeles for eight years. After serving as an adminstrator at the Bible In- stitute of Los Angles, he came to Grace Seminary in 1947 and has since served as Professor of Apolo- getics and Homiletics, Executive Vice President, and Vice President in Charge of Public Relations. Ministering to the denomination as an evange- list and a Bible teacher, he has spoken in nearly every Brethren Church. He is also a leading board member of the Home Missions Council and of the Brethren Missionary Herald. In 1956 he received a citation from the Air Force for outstanding service as a speaker at the chaplains ' retreat held in Alaska. In recognition of a broad, diversified, and ef- fective ministrv we dedicate this 1959 GRACE to DR. PAUL R. BAUMAN. WORLD TRAVELER PamMericm M hirrn Arour ivc Page Seven And Jesus increased ... In Wisdom . OUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS . . . The central obligation imposed by the Chris- tian Faith is an unreserved acknowledgement of Jesus as Lord. And the enterprise of true edu- cation cannot escape this great imperative. That is why we here in this Christian school— students and faculty alike— must recognize and accept Jesus Christ for all that He claimed to be: God manifest in the flesh and therefore Lord of hu- man life, infinitely able to help in the solution of all our problems regardless of their nature. Moreover we must actually take these prob- lems to Him, and let it be known that such is our fixed policy and habit. We shall not talk less about the ideals and principles and ethics of Christ, but we shall talk more about Christ Himself. We must understand that apart from Him all religion becomes merely a form of godli- ness, altogether powerless to transform human life or to solve the riddle of human existence. Because we love our fellowmen, we cannot tolerate anything that savors of dishonor or dis- loyalty to Christ. If we must choose between pleasing Him and pleasing men, we shall not hesitate no matter how great the loss materially to our institutions; for we shall count the re- proach of Christ greater riches than any reward that the world might offer. We will not reject ideas merely because they happen to be new or old; but we expect to bring all things to the test of the mind of Christ as revealed in the Holy Scriptures. We shall not cease to strive for worthy recognition from those who may set the standards of educational excellence, but we are under an infinite obligation to set Christ above all. And we shall prize His word, Well done, beyond all the fair words and plaudits of men. Page Ten PRESIDENT ALVA J. McCLAIN Th.M., D.D., L.L.D. Professor of Christian Theology Page Eleven WILLIAM A. The spiritual program consists of the annua} mid-winter Grace Bible Conference, a time of challenge for students and alumni alike. Every year a special outside speaker is featured. Material aid has likewise been great. The paving of the roadway and parking area around the Administration Building, the light- ing of this area, the purchase of permanent athletic equipment, three partial scholarships to Grace College, and a $700 gift for the col- lege building program are the result of alumni work and sacrifice over a five-year period. Officers for this year are John Aeby, presi- dent; Bruce Button, vice president; Ivan French, treasurer; and Richard DeArmey, sec- retary. Bauman Memorial Lecture- ship was initiated by the 1952 national con- ference of the Brethren Church. The purpose of this annual fifteen-year lectureship is to give recognition to the great contribution made by the late Dr. L. S. Bauman in his 57- year ministry. Important conditions of the lectureship are: 1. Each annual course shall consist of at least four lectures. 2. The subjects must be within the range of the interests and ministry of the late Dr. Bauman. 3. The lectures deemed of permanent value shall be published in book form. These lectures are delivered as a part of the alumni-sponsored Grace Bible Conference. This year ' s lectures have been incorporated into Dr. McClain ' s book, The Greatness of the Kingdom. SPANNIN ' SPRING CHOIR TOUR t. ■. i ' J L U U Page Sixty-Four E DEPARTMENT r . ( 7HE NATION WITH VITNESS N Christian service is at once the motivation and the goal of true Christian education. Labors for the Lord know no occupational bounds; teachers, businessmen, preachers, and missionaries alike find the purpose of life in witness. The student finds that the responsibility of a Christian service appointment turns him to a frequent examination of his life and rela- tionship to Christ. Classroom fact and per- sonal faith unite, as new-found truths are put into practice in the daily life. Our school expects each student to manifest a vital interest in the eternal values of life. With the assignment and regular recording of service comes the establishment of a pat- tern of life. Experience gained through weeklv services in hospitals, jails, churches, and youth groups provides the background for more ex- tensive ventures both in summer work and in the future field of God ' s choosing. RICHARD G. MESSNER Director of Athletics The completion of an excellent physical education plant last October made it possible for Coach Dick Messner ' s varsity basketball squad to practice daily for the first time. Better competition on the intercollegiate level in basketball fulfills one-fourth of the athletic program required for entrance into the Hoosier Conference. Intercollegiate baseball is planned for next spring; track and football are a few years away. The gym also provides facilities for better physical education classes and more intramural sports.
