SPIRIPWAL EIPE.. .. . SOCIAL LIFE.... Grace Theolegical Seminary and Grace College Winena Lake, Indiana USTOMARILY a yearbook seeks to justify its existence by a dedication or a theme. We feel that such a book can have no meaning unless that which it portrays has meaning. Therefore we wish to dedicate the 1954 CHARIS to that which gives purpose to Grace Theological Seminary and to the lives of its students — the Word of God. We feel that God’s Word is the only hope for a world now dominated by human phil- osophies. Our civilization is tottering in these latter days because man has cut himself off from the only revelation which God has given. Those who still believe in the inerrancy of the Bible are accused of holding an unworthy conception of God. Liberals tell us that God’s Word is immediate, subjective, mystical; that it cannot be carried within the covers of a book or identified with the words of the Bible. To the liberal, the term “God” is merely a hook on which to hang humanly conceived attributes. The words of men have been substituted for the Word of God. We believe, on the contrary, that God is the self-revealing one, that He has spoken in such a way that men can understand Him. We praise Him that His Word can indeed be carried within the covers of the old family Bible or a bat- tered pocket testament. God has revealed himself through the nation of Israel, through His servants the prophets, and through Jesus Christ, His Son. Further- more God has recorded these things in an inspired Book that we might know him. Grace Theological Seminary exists primarily for the study of that Book. Having bowed our minds and hearts to the authority of the Scriptures, we as Christians are seeking to learn what God has said about himself, and what He expects from us. Instead of interpreting the Bible in the light of man-made creeds, we are seeking to draw our creeds from the Word itself. If the Word of God were merely ink and paper, the liberals would be justified in their criticisms of evangelical Christianity as cold orthodoxy. The Word, however, is not only written, it must also be preached. The written Word points us to the historical facts upon which our faith depends: “Christ died for our sins .. . He was buried . . . He rose again.’’ Even while studying, we at Grace are committed to the proclamation of this Good News, in the pulpit, on the street corner, and in personal testimony. Our purpose is not knowledge, even biblical knowledge, for its own sake; our purpose is to send out graduates prepared to bring to lost men and women the Word of God, that they might come into a personal relationship with the living Word, the Lord Jesus Christ. God has given us His Word not to be hoarded but to be shared. Year by year our graduates go out from this place to preach the gospel to every creature. Our prayers go with this year’s Seniors. May our Lord’s blessings rest upon each one in his field of service, for God has entrusted each with the highest calling on earth — the stewardship of the Word of God. JrsReoM. Into God's unending plan The years of man are fitted one on one Their perfect symmetry of ritual span The calendar of duty done. Lately now, another year may shield Full countenance from mortal peer To rest unchanged by future centuries’ yield Yet apropos as early future’s bier. The new appears and to the dying brings In vain redundance glories of the dead While we who live in Christ dwell safe therein And with our hearts dependent, face ahead. To now petition Faith ... which to the rock like hyssop clings Surmounting thirst and wilderness of sin By cross cast full in Marah’s bitter springs Our sweeter lives, the evidence of real. Wisdom ... not as David’s lesser son Such overflows with knowledge sorrow’s vault Much rather Spirit’s wisdom, Calvary won, From Son to sons unveiled as virtue’s salt. Love ... yea love triumphant over death And unto life, the vesture of true child; Nor these alone our strength, first loved of thee We lift on high Thy Word — as Key of Promise. leeees: ALVA J. McCLAIN fEheMe aU). President, and Professor of Christian Theology UTSTANDING in the field of Biblical Theology is Alva J. McClain. A gifted scholar, his life is given to the teach- ing of a system of Christian doctrine based entirely on the Word of God. We are grate- ful for the benefit of his wide range of experience and his keen theological insight. He has taught us truths which we trust will continue to be real to us throughout our future ministries. As we leave Grace, we will not soon forget the gentle wit and wisdom of Dr. McClain. In his capacity as president, Dr. McClain heads our admin- istration. Each faculty mem- ber is a specialist in his own field, but all share the single purpose of educating us for the ministry of the Word. HOMER A. KENT, SR. SOCIAL LIFE Th «| th Siti ie Psalm 119:14 I have rejoiced in the way of Thy testimonies, as much as in all riches The only way to have experience . . In our last fling of the summer season we assembled at Lake Wa- wasee for the Fall retreat. Torrey Johnson’s message started off the morning on a Spiritual note. After a day of softball, volleyball, and plenty of good food we returned tired but happy and ready for the fall term. The faculty greeted us Their wives served us UNCH and conversation were in order following introductions at the faculty reception in Septem er. All who attended had opportunity to make new acquaintances, while in many instances, old ones were renewed. A challenging message capped the evening’s activities, thus completing a _ successful launching of the young school year. The highlight came at the Wheaton Invitational, where Grace lost to Trinity of Chicago in the finals but won the hearts of the spec- tators. Credit goes to the team for its hustle and enthusiasm. The old refrain, “Wait ’till next year,” for once has a promising ring. CREAMS split the air as one by one we entered the darkness of the Hallowe’en Party. Students paraded in costumes of mummies, clowns, and ghosts for an evening of games and refreshments, after which Warren Purdy brought the de- 7otions. OUFFANT skirts were much in evidence as the college- sponsored formal banquet was held in the lower auditorium. Following a succulent meal, the guests were entertained with a program in the newly furnished lounge.
