Summer Service HIS FOLLOWERS; John Cake, Jan Perryman, Ruth Keffer, Neena Beegle, Bob Foote Suitcases packed, keys returned and finals finished meant going home for a summer of routine for the majority of the student body. A less numerous group merely switched housing before summer school began. The minority of the student body members set out on one of the most difficult and growth producing twelve weeks of their experience as summer missionaries and on music teams. The “Spirit of Praise” marked the end of their two-year career together as school closed, while “His Followers” commenced a nine-week tour through the East. France was the destination of six eager summer missionaries: Pam Green, Sue Suter, Duane Cory, Dave Griffith, Bruce Robbins and Wayne Hannah, the team leader. Cheryl Holman, Bob Wenger and Elaine Heatwole headed for Stuttgart, Germany, to share a singing ministry and testimonies. These students have dedicated the largest portion of their summer vacation to summer service, but every student had opportunities constantly throughout vacation to share his vibrance and joy in living with those he met and learned to love. SPIRIT OF PRAISE. John Cake, Ruth Craig, Sue Kiebel, Daryle Emch, Joy Teeter (not shown) 95
Dear Mom and Dad, I just can’t believe it . . . only one more week! When I look back it seems like I’ve been at Grace a long time, but yet these past four years seem to have been the shortest. Remember all those times I almost gave up? All the term papers and studying? Now, it all seems worthwhile. I’m glad I could come to a Christian school that hasn’t lost its standards. I’m really afraid of what I’ll be doing after graduation, but you’ve always taught me to trust and have faith so I guess I won’t worry about it. Thanks for all your prayers during these years and the way you’ve encouraged me. Love, Penelope Dear Mom and Dad, This semester is student teaching. Up until now I’ve just been observing, but today was my first day to jump right in. This morning one of the little boys saw my class ring with ’74 on it and asked if I was 74 years old. Sometimes the kids are real brats, but when I see them actually learning something I’m teaching, it’s a good feeling. I’ve graded so many papers this past week that I’m starting to make mistakes. I didn’t realize how tiring student teaching can be—this is worse than the summer I worked two jobs. Lo ve, Penelope Dear Mom and Dad, Remember in the last letter I told you that Josh Armor asked me to the Junior-Senior banquet? I wanted to write and tell you about the good time we had. I calmed down some by the time he came, and we seemed to be able to find plenty to talk about on the way to Nappanee. The food was really great. Josh asked if he could take me to church Sunday . . . maybe this is the start of something? Love, Penelope 96
