If you weren't compet- ing on the athletic field you were busy in the classroom competing for class rank. In extra-curricular activi- ties the class spread themselves very thin. The Art Club was made up of primarily Iuniors while the Miles- tone was headed by two Iuniors. The class was apart during the academic year, but we came together at the Ir. Class Ski Trip. It was high- lighted by an outdoor heated swim- ming pool, luxurious condos, and twenty-six inches of snow which unfortunately left us stranded an extra night. We returned to take the S.A.T. for the last time of the year. We then turned our energy toward colleges and the successful Ir. Class Carnival. Our hopes are high and we expect to travel very far. Each fall the team is able to get a good look at themselves and can determine how good they will be in the season. This year the team got a good look at many talented players, both old and new. Veterans like Rob Studley, and Steve Breiseth were there to lead the five new stu- dents on the team to successful seasons. The team's good fortune was a result hard work, strong goal tending, and experienced coaching. Next year losing eight players and Coach Mulligan will be hard, but with good players coming up the team should be ready to play. Season highlights in- cluded a 1-0 victory over the always strong Nobles team and an exciting hard fought 2-1 loss to undefeated league champs Middlesex in the sea- son's final game. This year's varsity field hockey team was led by co-MVP's Melanie D'Orazio '86 and Amy Mack '87. D'Orazio turned away more than 100 shots as goalie and earned All- League honorable mention. Mack was a leader for the offense and re- ceived All-League All-Star recogni- tion. Even though the football team didn't have a winning season this year, the team was still a success. We managed to shut out St. Mark's. This victory showed that we did have the spirit of a winning team in all of us. With a strong defense we held all the teams we played, for all they had. A strong offense was the decisive fac- tor in our victory over St. Mark's. This team had some very talent- ed players in newcomers Todd Smith and Bill Dumoulin. Also there were the veterans Beau Iones, Paul Nardone, and Dave Moore. Losing a lot of players next sea- son doesn't mean that the team won't win. We still have a large number of young, strong underclassmen, who really know how to play the game. Although we are sad we have to say goodbye to the senior players, I think we will have a strong season next year. W VW at . xgvaifs 1 3 .L in , a I N7 . f U1 '- 1-'-7 . . ' -nw v . With only five returning varsity players, as well as a new coach, the beginning of the new season was fil- led with doubt. No one was expect- ing the team to live up to last years success. However, after the first few matches, the team seemed unbeat- able, which later proved to be true. Going into the season, we thought that we would have the most difficulties in trying to beat Milton, but B-B8zN became our toughest op- ponent, as they were the only ones to whom we gave up two games. The young team, led by captains Amy I-Iefford and Tracy Beckett, un- der the guidance of Coach Letvin- chuck, went onto another undefeat- ed season: as well as earning another I.S.L. Championship banner to hang in the gym. Varsity GDA OPP Pingree 2 0 Lawrence 2 0 Ch H! Ch H 2 0 B-BSLN 2 1 Lawrence 2 0 Milton 2 0 Dana Hall 2 0 Pingree 2 0 gt Milton Cancelled B-B-81N 2 1 CH H! The starting five were listed the same in the book every game: Small, Nardone, Rodgers, Foster, and Moore. These five dominated the floor. Co-Captain Derric Small, with his quickness and agility would run up the score while leaving the de- fense in the dust. Paul Nardone, our other Gaptain, kept the court orga- nized when on defense. Mike Rod- gers, scored consistently with deter- mination and hard work. Bob Foster boxed out aggressively. Dave Moore, our six foot eight center, pulled down many rebounds. The talent does not stop with the starting five. Troy Eskridge, a fresh- man. has the potential to be the star of the court. Iohn Huard made many important steals. Iohn Kantzian im- pressed the crowd with his graceful dunks. Steve Breiseth, Greg Heath, and Ben Williams were always working in practice and gave 1505 when put in the game. ' The second year of the C.D.A. womens ice hockey team was very successful as well as an improve- ment from the first. Even with the loss of key players, the season proved to be a great accomplish- ment. Many spectators didn't expect much from the new team on cam- pus. But with the determination of Coach Bromley and hard-working players, the team's record leaped from 1-5-0 to a strong 6-4-0, estab- lishing the team as one to be reck- oned with. The start of the season was very strong with impressive wins against Boston Latin and Lawrence, 8-1 81 12- 2. Losses followed but to older and more experienced teams. Many teams the women lost to their first year, were beaten and surprised by the Governors' improvement. Much of this credit goes to the team's only goalie, Shawn Gager. With helpful hints from Tom Von less, she kept many important scores low. This team will definitely miss seniors, Melanie D'Orazio lcaptain - '858z'86J, Kelly Papin, Sandy Nichols, and Niki Truman. But with Lyndsay Rowan, as new co-captain with Amy Mack, eager jayvee and varsity players, and Coach Bromley, the team should prove to be even strong- er and more successful. Q nlffn-1 .19 Q if I-Er L YL This, the first year of the wom- en's jayvee hockey team, was a year of great learning. The team, which started out with no idea how to play, quickly learned the basic skills thanks to Mr. Seufert and Mrs. Bromley. Though the team had only one game against Exeter, the girls prac- ticed with a lot of spirit, which al- lowed them to improve so much. Two of the girls, Heidi Danielson and Kristin Casazza, became varsity players halfway through the season. The rest of the girls will surely help the varsity team in the near future. Many wrestlers feel as though they do it only for themselves. and they cannot be blamed. They have personal goals as motiva- tions, and on the mat they are one-on-one with their opponents. Wrestlers go through a lot of pain and endurance in preparing for a match. They must also battle their weight as well as their fear and anticipation. The mental stress plays a large role in the outcome of a match. Psyching out the oppo- nent may make or break a match. The wrest- lers must also rely on learned techniques to be a winner. This year, Mr. Scheidegger stepped in as the new head coach and quickly whipped the team into shape with his vigorous workouts and iron hand. The results payed off at the Christmas Tournament where senior Todd Smith won the 177 pound title, and juniors Tim Carmichael H151 and captain Greg Wald- man l145J took seconds. After Christmas break there was more hard work. relieved though by captain Greg Waldman's constant jokes, and at the Graves-Kelsey Tournament, Waldman won the 145 pound championship against an undeafeated, Milton senior. This Tournament was also highlighted by a second place from Ion Morriseau l119l, and fourths from Reggie Edmonds 11001, Todd Smith 11771 and Tim Carmichael. A week after the Graves. several mem- bers ofthe team travelled to MIT for the New- Englands, where once again Greg Waldman was champion ll-151, as well as Todd Smith 11771. Reggie Edmonds l98l and Tim Carmi- chael l110l took fourths. During Spring Break, Mr. Scheidegger took next year's co-captains Greg Waldman I1-151 and Tim Carmichael l110j to Lehigh Uni- versity for the National Prep. School Wres- tling Tournament. Facing the best competition either of them had ever seen, they both wres- tled well, with captain Greg Waldman even getting to within one match of placing. VN hat do you think Coach Scheidegger? Again and again they flung them- selves into the canyons of Concord in spite of ice, mud, and pinecone patches. Ask one of them what the words Lawrence Orchard means to them and you will see determina- tion in their eyes. On the lighter side, the team ran Golf-course hills, did Mr. Werst's fitness tests, and played the infamous Spudball game. On this young and inexperi- enced team there were two stan- douts. Cabot Orton, by far our most advanced skier, regularly placed in the top third of ISSA competition and earned his MVP the old-fash- ioned way: excellence. Our biggest future prospect, Amy Russell, went through incredible progress through the season to beat a top skier lAnne Kugler, Crotonj and to earn her most improved player cup. The team was characterized by good spirit and the good leadership of captain Iohn v. Wentzel lmen's1 and len Griffin lwomen'sl. What the team desperately needed was snow training. Rumors of Mr. White trying to accelerate the next ice age are false, but he now does hold vital snow-course data. With more snow training and the possibility of most skiers returning, the Nordic Ski Team should prosper next year. 1 ' 1X8 1f11 U15 2X5 ZX8 2f12 2f15 U11 1f15 2f15 4,.a' Nordic Skiing .L Men's ISSA 7th of 7 Multi 4th of 4 ISSA 4th of 4 ISSA 8th of 9 Multi 2nd of 2 ISSA 9th of 9 Multi 3rd of 3 Women's lvllltli 4th of 4 ISSA 4th of 4 Multi 3rd of 3 K.. .X . Glft to Dodge Morgan from the Brag- dons and G D A 'S'-X Every once in a while there will come a person that makes the impossible possible. This kind of person repre- sents us all and lifts us up from the ordinary. Without peo- ple like this achieving incredible goals, our lives would have no meaning. These people need us to drive them but most important, we need them to drive us. Fortunately Dodge Morgan is this special person for all us here at G.D.A.. Dodge Morgan had it made for himself. He has a lovely wife and two great children, and was also the pres- ident of a big company. One might say what else could a man want. However Dodge Morgan showed us that life is more than wealth and fame. Maybe circumnavigating the globe is not something for us, but it was something very important for Dodge Morgan. He showed us that we must live life and not just sit back and watch it go by. Kaz- antzakis' Zorba said, Life is full of troubles, only death is not. We must undo our belts and look for trouble. So that is what Dodge Morgan did. He put on his bow-tie and his tuxedo and sailed off in his American Dream. Dodge found his dream and on May 1st, in Port- land Maine, he brought it back to us. Without change, something inside of us sleeps. The sleeper must awaken! Thank you Dodge Morgan for waking us up! Qvlf' 'DF' Q Amy Russell with another win! 'E C? 9 L 'iii Lilg .lr The 1986 Women's Varsity Track team accomplished more than they or any one thought they would. With only twelve people running and throwing in regular season meets, the girls came out on top with only two losses. The teams they lost to were much larger and in different leagues but the girls did well despite their disadvantage. Going up against teams with twenty or more girls, the meager squad ended with many amazing victories and excellent per- formance. Go-captain and MVP Debbie Waters clinched many victories for the team as she performed in four to five events per meet. Sue Gage, Anne Taylor, Karen Kagan, and Margaret Asadoorian to- gether made the weight crew strong this year. In the high jump, Pam Chase put in some very strong per- formances. Lyndsay Rowan, Lisa Hernandez and Amy Mack scored many points for the sprint team, and Amy M. in both hurdle events. The I.S.L. winning team D. Waters, L. Rowan, A. Russo, and L. Hernandez brought home a new school record, in the 4 by 400M relay. Despite their small number, the team received, for the fourth year in a row, the New England Prep School Championship Title. This in itself proved that nothing is impossible. 146 Get set Go! M 'S TRACK C LY FCUR SE ICRS The Track Team as usual had a large group V-T: rT Rf' since there isn't a IV team as in other team sports. With Co-captains Dave Moore and Pat McCul- lom, along with Tom Wallace and Mark Thom- son were the only seniors the team had. These four accounted for a lot of the weight crew's many points as well as good scoring in the sprin- ting events. Many members developed into great competitors like Dave Miller who won just about every race he ran, gaining sometimes 15 or 20 points for the team. Also were Dave Dunwell, the fastest on the team, Troy Eskridge who excelled in the high jump, Bob Foster hurling the discus, and Ion Fosdick winning points in the Pole Vault before having to leave the team for the season. The team's greatest victory this year was over St. Paul's. Coach Rybicki was keeping a close eye on all the events, keeping a count of all the points needed and in which events we could win. St. Paul's has a great relay team so we were counting on Dave Miller and Cabot Orton to cap- ture first and third in the 2000m, which they were able to do and gave us the edge to win by one point, 73 to 72. Next year should prove to be a good one even with the loss of four talented seniors. Since the team has a very large long distance group al- ready, the sprint and jump people may get some help from new members in the following season. rf-...-.- ,, v - ...1 I . Contrary to previous sea- sons' preformances, this years club was able to steal a few more victo- ries. This lifted the spirits of the coach and all the players. Maybe it was the new uniforms or the new leadership of the young captain? Who knows? What ever it was, this strange magic helped the team to defeat such opponents like Rivers. No hort cuts were taken by the dedicat- d few who produced this quality ok. The MILESTONE like any oth- r yearbook takes time and hard ork. As in past books, many of the ILESTONE members were not eady to give the time needed. This left the Editors the j ob of finding new ople and doing more work than they could handle. Now the MILESTONE is done, nd we all hope that you enjoy it! - Ionathan Fosdick klffw DLM and Nikki spent a lot of time planning her section.
