Heberton Evans III died peacefully on 12 February, 1985 at the age of fifty-eight. He had been a teacher, coach, dormitory master, and friend at GDA for thirty-three years. It is hard to convey an effective portrait of this man, whose tangible accomplishments were formidable, with his four published books, vast number of athletic wins, and excel- lence as a teacher. But more important than these was his ability as a leader. I'll never forget hearing the players on his teams saying how they played, and when possible won, for Heb , more than themselves, the school, or anything else. He was the kind of leader one wanted to please. One wanted to please him not out of fear, but out of devotion. This is the mark of a great leader. GEORGE I-IEBERTO Don't be dismayed at good- byes. A farewell is necessary before you can meet again. And meeting again, after moments or lifetimes, is certain for those who are friends. - R. Bach ik ailf P CHARLES Here comes the sun, to chase the ghouls away. It comes out in phases. Will it come out to stay? It shines so brightly, bringing life to the day But they all are numbered and who is to say? What comes tomorrow? Who has to pay? He knows the game and he knows how to play. But something won't let him: in bed he must lay. I-Ie keeps it inside, but it seeps out in a way. His eyes tell the truth while all else leads astray. The balloon floats high as waves roll in from the bay. The sun is still shining as the disc drops for delay. Make the most of it now. Don't wait for that day, When the clouds come back and the sun goes away. . ... Court Heiss, an eighteen- If year-old Governor Dummer Senior, died on December fourth, 1984. In july of 1983 he had been stricken with a rare blood disease in his bone marrow that affected his blood production. The only treatment for him were weekly blood transfusions and heavy doses of anti-biotics and vitamins to battle the infections to which he was extremely susceptible. Doctors could not identify his disease, so the treatments he received were only guesses and experiments. After a year and a half, this disease developed into leukemia and killed him. -ds W f,,,.'.f .J A -sr! EDWARD 1-IEISS, JR. Peter Condon, '85 Court once said Those who are not busy being born are busy dying. Perhaps he was trying to tell us that in living, we shou1dn't just live. We should use each day to learn and experience, and to really get something out of life. This is true living. And those who are not living, well, their spirit is dying. And, as Peter Condon alluded to in his poem on this page, we should not put off living until it is too late. 3 -...,-.. .... ,.. Y , Quinn: Are you serious? Dan: Of course he's serious! I HHH1! Most think of teamwork as members of an athletic team working together to ultimately achieve victory. This is the most common interpretation of the word, however, its boundaries are not that limited. People must work together, and rely on other people, in order to complete a difficult and demanding task. Without help and support from others, the task becomes many times harder, and much longer to complete. By using teamwork, each member accepts part of the responsibility. In a small, close-knit community such as Governor Dummer, each member is expected to accept responsibility. With this responsibili- ty, each contributes to the well-being of the community. When the respon- sibility is neglected, the negligence has an impact throughout the community. Every aspect of Governor Dum- mer Academy involves teamwork. Teamwork can be seen in the classroom, on the field, and in each of the organizations. Without team- work, our community could no longer be addressed as a real community. - By Jeanne Smith 11 E. ,,. . - - A , y .. All your danger is in discordg therefore, be at peace hence forward, and as brothers live together. - The Song of Hiawatha 1 There are times when the success of the team depends on the actions of individual members of the team. Bragdon, Headmaster During these Hnal innings of the year we are awarding those who have excelled. As we present these awards we should keep in mind the teaching and guidance from our faculty which made all this possible and We should keep in mind the strength of the competition for these awards. Thus, as we honor individuals who are fully deserving of these awards we are also honoring the dedication of a comm unity to the highest possible goals in educa- tion. THE MORSE FLAG ,P seventy-two years ago at the 150th Commencement of this school, and it has been awarded each year since that time to the senior whose record in all respects has met with the highest approval of the faculty. According to the trust established by the late Reverend Glen Tilley Morse, a long- time friend and Trustee of the Academy, a new flag is provided each year in order that the old flag which has flown over the school during the past year may be given to a member of the graduating class. The visible accomplishments of this year's recipient of the Morse Flag are immense, but behind these obvious successes is the attitude of an unassuming and effective leader GEORGE PERICLES HA SAPIDIS 18 ,lp ws, ,,. We anticipated arriving in to warm, plush rooms, good food, and friendly hosts. Quickly we discovered small, cold rooms, terrible food, and very unfriendly hosts, somehow, despite all of the drawbacks, the Ski Trip was an unforgettable time for all. The entire class merged, enjoying the company and companionship of each other and made good out of a very bad situation . That alone says a great deal about the class of '86. 60 The class took an original approach in planning their closed weekend, one of the more memorable ones of the year. Highlighted by the movie, Psycho , the exiting game show, The Price is Right Chosted by our Bob Barker - Mr. Mul- liganj, and the famed Club 86 , the weekend proved to be a success. Following their successful week- end, the juniors decided to take a different approach to the annual Jr. Class Carnival, planning the first Junior Class Beach Day - A Fun Filled Day in the Sun . Blessed with a beautiful, sunny day, the entire community enjoyed a relaxing day on Plum Island. junior Class President, Paul Nardone, says this of the Junior class: Our class is a group of diversely talented students, excelling in the classroom, in the arts and drama department, as well as on the athletic fields. Governor Dummer has much to look forward to next year as the charismatic class'of '86 assumes the reigns of responsibility and leaderhship . H Y 62 SOPHO ORES This year's Sophomore class, the class of '87, is a strong and talented group, with a wide range of interests. We represent ourselves well in many aspects of life at Governor Dummer. Academically, not only do we have many Honor Roll students, but Peter Barton is on the High Honor Roll. We have many outstanding actresses such as Beth johnson, Kris Kolbialka, Carla Rivela, Shanie Halpern, and jennifer Killion. Paula McCarthy, Pam Chase, Kiki Chesterson, and Karen Patton are three season Varsity letter winners. We also represent a diverse number of races and geographic locations: Saudi Arabia, China, California, and Hawaii. Our class was greatly increased and strengthened this year by the arrival of many new students. They made instant friends, and it feels now as if they have been here forever. Our biggest project was our weekend, which we planned in january. We featured movies, ice-cream, and a spectacular dance, which was one of the best all year. Although it was hard to get motivated immediately after a vacation, we did it and proved that we can work together. Our cooperation helped us to not only plan, setup, and clean up, but also to overcome a cancelled Talent Show. Unfortunately, many Sophomores had a difficult year. Many things, both good and bad, evolved in the course of the year, and many changes occured. With some effort, we were able to overcome many barriers, and we seem to have come out on top. All we need now is a little more interaction and togetherness. This is what we're working on, and soon, our class will be stronger than anyone thought possible. ,f hill ri I iitf P .4 , i Q T ' - -..5 ...i i Q I 4 f I ef .1 J! 4.6 6 ' .1 F RESI-IME The Class of '88 feels it has much to offer G.D.A., now and in the future. Its members have made numerous contributions already: on the stage, on the playing fields, and in the classroom. Most important, the class is strong and unified despite its diversity. The freshmen are a group of multi-talented, ambitious young people who take pride in what they do. The first chance that the freshmen had to prove themselves was at the final closed weekend of the year. They had the responsibility of organizing various events that would entertain their peers as well as the upperclassmen. They were put to the test when, on Thursday before their weekend, they were told that a change must be made since sports were going to be held on Saturday. After cancelling some plans, and rescheduling others, the freshmen gave the student body an enjoyable weekend. Through organization and cooperation the class overcame all barriers, and succeeded in achieving their initial goal: to make the weekend fun. The freshmen definitely know how to have a good time. They enjoy each other and many great friendships have already formed. They respect each other as people and are proud of their classmates as well as themselves. They support one another, and are afraid neither to ask for help, nor to offer it. Each freshman has something to give. Their greatest gift, however, is their ever-present optimism. With smiles on their faces, the classmates of '88 look hopefully to the future. 66 C LOSED WEEKEND Freshmen setting up for the dance UD Anyone here from New jersey? me fe qgx l li ww J, A, , ,,,,,..-1..,.-4'-H--uf - L 4 I 5 f L ,Y Will X Say cheese, Phil! 5 ......---J ll 3 pg. ,.4-- '7-2-ja'-1 lil Qauwuw 1-Q? '1 'fv COMMUNITY COUNCIL The Community Council has taken off with a strong start. It began with members attempting to redefine the role of the Council, and establishing some goals. A deliberate attempt has been made to change the image of the group from a grievance committee to an advisory body that will serve the Governor Dummer Community as a whole. Indeed the original intent behind the establishment of the group was to legitimatize students' opinion in the eyes of the Administration - a goal which has been achieved. The most important goal of the Community Council is to create a responsible body that will serve the entire school not only for this year but the entire future as well. This club is the silent foundation of a great many GDA social and perform- ing arts events. The tour team has the important job of showing off the Academy to its future students. This job can also become very hectic when tour guides fall sick or become unavailable somehow, and the heads must find a replacement. Mahoney, Coach Rybicki, Capt. T. Dinnano It is unfortunate that the record of wins and losses of a particular team is the only thing that is considered in the final analysis. It is especially unfortunate for this year's football team, which, after losing a game, had the remarkable resiliency to come back and work twice as hard for the next game. This is a truly outstanding achievement considering the number of tough breaks that it had. The season opened with the Governors travelling to St. Sebas- tian's, where although they were the dominant team, they fell prey to small errors which St. Sebastian's capitalized on. The Thayer, Brooks, and Groton games really showed how depth hurt the football team this year. St. Mark's was the next game, and what a game it was!! GDA matched their opponents point for point until the last seconds of the game when the St. Mark's running back scored to give them a win by Front Row: Mng. C. Dalessio, D. Moore, P. Nardone, M. Led by new coach john Friborg, Co-Captains Meredith Lazo and Anna Hill, and a small group of outstanding seniors, including Manager Melissa Huffsmith, the team created a special chemistry that rendered utterly meaningless the scoreboard that counts wins and losses. On the scoreboard that does count - the scoreboard that measures a team's heart and the degree to which a team's members care about each other, support each other, persevere together - on that scoreboard , the team was an unqualified and unforget- table success. There were inspiring team efforts Cat Exeter, St. Paul's, and Brooksj, outstanding individual performances fMer- edith was given All-League Honors, Anna and Marie earned honorable mentionsj, and more than enough individual and collective improvement to go around. While the season ended in tears, the laughs and love of this magic season and team may last a lifetime. Front Row Mgr M. Huffsmith, L. Demeri, L. Asadoorian, M. Lazo, A. Moore, V. Hunt, M. Stahl, K. N'S SOCCER At one point or another almost everyone on this year's Men's Varsity Soccer Team suffered an injury. This caused the team's line-up to be constantly changed. At the end of the season, the loss of three-year veterans Nolden john- son .and Rob Studley seriously damaged the offense. Injuries to Injuries Hurt backs jiseop Yoon, Andy Menyhart, and Anthony Fusco crippled the No-Entry Sentry squad. The season started well with wins against both the Alumni and St. George's. After some close games, and some other not-so-close games, the team started to come along. The Governors held most opponents scoreless in the first half, but lost confidence in the second halves. Although many of the exper- ienced players will be graduating this year, there are also many lettermen who will return to face the challenge of next year. Y? i2f13,5f' wi Coach Casazza, T. In just 3 years Steve developed into the best player ever to wear GDA colors. He dazzled many a crowd with magical passes and thunderous dunks. Tourn. lst This year's Volleyball team was both undefeated in games and also spirit. Finishing the season 14-0 was not only a tribute to the team's playing ability, but also their receptiveness to playing as a team. At the beginning of the season the team decided that it had three goals: First to finish with an undefeated season, second to play as a complete team, and thirdly and most impor- tantly to have fun and enjoy the sport. This year's team did not only set those goals but also accomplished them. It took a lot of hard work and dedication, but somehow we pulled it off. Since we had 10 of out 12 players returning varsity, we were expected to produce results. And because of this we felt a lot of pressure, but Coach Clark told us to take one game at a time, and that we did. The M.V.P.s for this year's team were the setter M. Lazo and centerback-spiker E. Huggard. In retrospect, there were actually no stars on this years team, just twelve excellent players that came together to form one excellent team. We are glad to have achieved an undefeated season for our Coach Ms. Clark to wrap up her Volleyball Coaching career at GDA. WOMEN,S HUCKEY An Icebreaking Season of -f F . Capt. Melanie D'Orazio, Coach Linda Bromley, and Capt. and MVP Stephanie D'Orazio. The establishment of a women's ice hockey program is a milestone in women's athletics at Governor Dummer Academy. Because this year was the team's first, the lady pucksters did not expect to have a winning season. No miracles hap- pened. But the team was successful in that it won all of the games that it played against other first year teams. Through hard work and dedica- tion, our players have created a from which to strong foundation build next year's varsity. Luckily, the team consists mainly of young the twenty-five players. Out of women on this year's team, twenty will be returning next year. This Behind every rapidly improving team, there is usually an excellent coach. There is no way that this team could have done what it did this year without the coaching of Linda Bromley. Coach Bromley took a handful of girls who could barely stand on skates and made them into an extremely strong first year team. Without her dedication to the success of this program, it is doubtful that women's hockey would have even existed at G.D.A. in 1985. But she was not alone. Assistant coach Bevin Cherot C853 was an immense help to the team in teaching skills and strategy, as well as in maintain- ing morale. Finally, jon Shain kept practices running smoothly, as GDA Opp year's first line will only be losing one manager. Without this trio, the team Middlesex 0 10 player, MVP and captain Stephanie could not have accomplished all that Egg: 2 T D'Orazio. The other four starters, it did over the course of the season. There was much anticipation, and apprehension, preceding this year's hockey season. Rumors flew around campus about the new faces associated with the team. We were going to be led by a new coach who had enjoyed much success at Kent school. The returning lettermen spent many hours speculating on how badly HE would kill us in tryouts. This speculation was the result of numerous rumors generated by Kent alumni and students and imported to Governor Dummer. As it turned out, the new coach, Mr. Piatelli, turned out to be pretty tough, but also pretty good. He developed, along with the help of Mr. Bromley, who was also new, a good, young, and high-spirited team. Quinn Pollock, Nolden johnson fthe co- captainsj and Steve Barrett, the team's only seniors, set the tempo for the others. The season looked to be promis- ing, but it was hampered by the leg injuries of Nolden, Rob Studley, and Bill Bronson, causing them to start late in the season. Shooting for a .500 Front Row: T. The best game of the season was a scrimmage against Keller division school Nobles and Greenough. The team played a hard-fought, fast- skating game that ended in a 5-5 tie in overtime. Inspiration was gained in many ways. A pep talk by Mr, Piatelli, a hip check by Nolden, a crowd- pleasing save by goalie Quinn, a goal by the diaper line, or a quick passing goal by Rob and Steve kept the team's spirit up. Talent is usually precluded by inexperience, but this team made up for its youth through its spirit and sheer hard work. At the end of the season, Quinn and Nolden received much credit, which was earned through the help of the whole team. Both were named to the all-league team, and both played in the East-West senior all-star game. Rob Studley and Quinn Pollock were named to the 2nd all-tourney team and Nolden to the lst. After last year's disastrous record of no wins, the team had no way to go except up. And with the return of Coach Alec White from his two years in Mexico, the team did just that. Countless time trials and hard workouts paid off in enabling GDA to be seventh Cup from ninth last yearj in the league of nine schools. Also helpful were the races between the two half-team squads. Twice a week, Kelly's Killers, under the leadership of co-captain and MVP Jeff Kelly, and the I-Iasapidis Horrors, under co-captain George Hasapidis, would battle it out in races which were heated on the golf course, which was definitely not. Although valuable skiers Jeff Kelly, Matt Haack, and George Hasapidis will graduate with the great class of '85, the team has enough depth in Shad Uttam, Cabot Orton, Dave Almy, Jason Kat- sapetses, and others to continue to improve. Also, the strenuous and effective coaching of coaches White and Corcoran will bring new days of glory to competitive skiing at GDA. The races were tough. Strong winds, finger-numbing temperatures, and hard, icy snow combined to make the races tests of will as well as tests of strength and skill. Also difficult were the mass starts of some of the races, with over a hundred stampeding, blood-thirsty skiers trying to establish themselves in the pack. Complicate that with sharp flying pole tips and skis getting entangled and you have one trying situation. But the team as a Front Row: W. Farley, J. Katsapetses, C. Orton, Co-Capt. Many wrestlers feel as though they do it only for themselves, and they cannot be blamed. They have their personal goals as motivations, and on the mat they are one-on-one with their opponents. Wrestlers go through a lot of pain and endurance in preparing for a match. And they must battle their weight as well as fear and anticipation. The mental stress plays a large role in the outcome of a match. Psyching out the opponent may make or break a match. The wrestler must also rely on learned techniques to be a winner. Coach Heb Evans knew all of these aspects of wrestling, and this Front Row: j. Tagg, A. Rybicki, G. Waldman, Capt. A. Webber, Gould, T. Cheung, G. Taft, E. Scola, A. Menyhart, R. Lessard, Coach P. As long as each individual did his part the best he could, Heb would take care of the rest. Ironically, our last meet, the only one without him, marked Heb's 200th career win. The team is very proud of this achievement. Even though he was a rough, stubborn perfectionist, he was also a fine and caring man, and gained the respect of all the team. As a team, we placed Sth in the Graves-Kelsey League Tournament and 2nd in the New England Independent school tournament. Individual winners in the Graves- Kelsey were Pete Condon with fourth place and Tim Carmichael and Greg Waldman with third places. Andrew Webber and jim Tagg took first places. Under the instruction of Donna Roaf, each day the dance troupe worked on perfecting their technique. Their particular technique is called the Luigi style. Along with the Luigi style, dancers choreo- graphed their own pieces, which were performed in the final show in March. In March, the dancers exhibited the result of their hard work and planning. Since November, each student worked on completing her solo or group dance. A lec- turefdemonstration of the actual dance class was given by the dancers who chose not to perform on stage. The most impressive victories came against BBSLN, Mil- ton, and always fun to beat, Brooks. The group was led by co- captains Dave Starensier and Anth- ony Fusco. Starensier consistently opened the hitting attack, and in the field he covered a lot of ground at shortstop. Fusco was the workhorse pitcher, earning five personal victor- ies. These two will be sorely missed. Sharing the pitching duties with Fusco were Mike Cal Huggarcl, who threw hard in his appearances, and junior newcomer John Huard. Sharing the catching duties for this staff were senior Rob Lessard and junior Mike Jasse. With a little luck, this team would have been a contender. The bunch lost more than a couple games by one run in late innings. The future shines bright for G.D.A. baseball. Power hitting infielders Rob DeLena and Greg Waldman will pace the attack, while john I-Iuard, john Khantzian, and Adam Kneissler will earn respect off the mound. Also, look for jeff Ashworth and speedy Andy Eaton to control the outfield. This team will have the experience and talent to post a winning season. But then again what else can be expected of a 5-year-old team. Actually we expected a lot. Our first goal was to better our 2-10 record of the '84 season, which we did. Our second goal was more of a must. We had to take a new team and a new coach and form a stable, working team. Our new coach was Katy Eames. The first few months were trying for us all, but we got our gripes out of the way and became very close. With 4 returning players, we left a lot of openings for new talent from the freshman and sophomores. Once the original ladder was set, our nerves from tryouts were calmed. Tennis is a very individualistic sport, therefore everyone has their ups and downs. But, through them all we had a great time. We all enjoyed also the companionship and coaching of our new coach. Best of luck in '86. Capt. Courtney Church, Coach Katy Eames Front Row: D. Giamette, j. Donat, K. Lawson. Back Row: jGrimes, M. Sheffield, C. Church, T. Beckett, K. Patton, J. Glesmann, Coach K. The team had an enjoyable season under Mr. Rowe's undeniably colorful supervision as coach and mentor. The season was a long one with almost every Wednesday and Satur- day taken up playing matches against some very tough teams such as Milton, Middlesex, and Belmont Hill. However, G.D.A. did not come bottom in the league this year because the team won two matches, Namely Thayer and St. Sebastian's. These wins did much to boost the team's confidence. Many of the players played well against some of the better teams but were unfortun- ate to lose, especially against Lawrence where we lost by 11-7. On the whole, the team may look back on the '85 season as a season of development and experience that will hold them in good stead for the next two seasons as all but one of the players are returning. Rumor has it that the school is to be injected with some more talent next year. This year's team strove hard to improve and produced a great amount of camaraderie and spirit from the work put into playing the game . Many thanks to Leslie Sevilla, our manager, and of course to Mr. Rowe for coaching us in an eventful and enjoyable season. Good luck next year! at .uk - FT 'A ye, Lil- fs Coach Rowe, V. Hunt, A. The 1985 Golf Team had one of its strongest seasons this year, coming in second in the Interscholas- tic league championships and second in the prestigious Witherspoon Cup - a three round competition against Andover and Exeter. The team played well through strong effort from each member of the team. New student to G.D.A. Derek Fung came out for golf and challenged co-captain Andy Meny- hart for the number one spot. His arrival, and a strong 9-0 record by co-captain Jon Shain, led the team to an 8-1-2 record. The team showed camaraderie at all times, whether waiting for the number eight player to finish his round, or having practice in the rain. This year, intra-team competi- tion has been more keen, and the practices have been more intense. Good luck to next year's cap- tains Steve Breiseth and George Liss, and to the rest of the team.
