THE 1984 MILESTO MILESTONE editors Charles Cashin and Elizabeth Hanson The completion of this page com pletes The 1984 MILESTONE. This book had more than it's share of prob lems and took nearly three years to complete. It was just one in a series of books that fell prey to lack of commit ment and responsibility by those stu dents responsble for it's completion Production began to fall behind sched ule mid-way through the 1983-1984 school year and most people quickly became discouraged and disinterest ed. When school closed in June of 1984, the 1984 MILESTONE was less than one-third complete. Members of the 1985 MILESTONE staff were able to make some progress with the 1984 book. The class of 1984 showed little interest in assisting with their book In the spring of 1986 I ap proached Mr Miller and told him that I wanted to see the book finished be cause I had already spent a great deal of time on it senior year In April I be gan working first by completing the sports section with what was avail able Most of june and July was spent in the darkroom printing photographs for the organizations and events sec tions During the month of August Kim Grillo and I completed these sec tions while Mr Miller finished the commencement and senior sections We hope you enjoy this book If you don t well Michael D1M0dlCa The class of 1984 ,I n ills. if ' i 7 J. 1' The Academy Prize Upon the retirement of Head mas- ter Ted Eames in 1959 the under- classmen of the Academy endowed the already existing Academy Prize so that henceforth at each com- mencement it could be given in honor of Edward W. and Eleanor K. Eames so that the qualities they so deeply prized might be prized in turn by future and succeeding classes, 172 The following commcll were taken hum rc- marks by the Headmaster and members nl the faculty The Morse Flag The Morse Flag was first awarded seventy-one years ago at the 150th Commencement of this school on june 9, 1913, and it has been awarded each year since that time to the se- nior whose record in all respects has met with the approval of the faculty. According to the trust established by the late Glen Tilley Morse, a long time friend and Trustee of the Acad- emy, a new flag is proveded each year in order that the old flag which has flown over the school during the past year may be given to a member of the graduating class. One of the true measures of a presence on our campus is the leg- acy left behind when graduation sends one of our own off. The leg- acy of this member of the Class of '84 is immense and it is indelible. She came to our community four years ago and immediately estab- lished herself as a presence on the stage with her fierce concentration and poise beyond her years . . . A member of Red Key, a member of The Chorus, Drama and Math Clubs, and Honor Society, a Se- nior Proctor. President of her Class . . . Founder of the Acad- emy's first dance troupe, the leg- acy will not only include this visi- ble troupe which will bear her name, but the grace and vivacity with which her many honors were achieved. ROECHELLE LEVETTE SMITH One of the many items of advice given to me by my predecessor, jack Ragle, was to keep this young man from doing too much. Obviously, I failed in this area as the recipient of this award culminated years of ser- vice . . . By co-supervising the busy Red Key Society and co-editing the demanding yearbook while leading three teams as captain and excelling as an athlete and performing credit- ably in his studies and earning a place in the Class of '88 of the United States Coast Guard Academy. CHARLES LUTHER CASHIN , III
