F' -N always ready to give a hand A person with a sense of humor can survive the boarding school lgfe, but the one who can regale his students and associates with an endless number of anecdotes that alleviate the daihf routine is a true contributor. A person who teaches the shills and techniques of a sport is a coach. A coach who does more than this is a mentor, giving generoushf of himself and his time Twelve years of dedicated efjfort have developed a first rate hockey program, and established a friendly atmosphere for twelve generations of boarding boys in Perhins dormitory. We, therefore, are proud to dedicate the 1984 IVULESTONE to an unselfish mentor and good Charles Stephen Harrington

ragdonis Are Well Received! - F GZ' L... .- Mr. G Mrs. Bragdon and Katherine February 8, 1984 Any appraisal of the school this year would be remiss if it did not applaud Mr. Bragdon for the com- mendable turn around in attitude he has brought to the school, and how far it has come. It is obvious to anyone who was here last year that the student body has a much more positive attitude, and is more enthusiastic towards the school. Mr. Bragdon has mastered the art of pep talks , and is accessible to the students. He has successfully turned the community in a new and better direction. For the first time in anyone's recollection, no one has been expelled from Governor Dum- mer by this point in the year. How many students can remember being inside the Mansion House, let alone being invited every Saturday night? These Open Houses make the Headmaster less 6 of a figure who can be seen only on rare occasions, but rather a person who can be communicated with and can provide assistance as a friend. This type of communication will prevent the chance of a rift separat- ing the student body and administra- tion, as happened in late February and early March of last year. Mr. Bragdon's open and positive attitude is his greatest contribution to the community. So, Mr. Bragdon, stand up in front of the school and take a well deserved bow. Courtesy of THE ACADEMY FREE PRESS Non sibi sed aliis. exemplifies a very important member of our community: Mrs. Dorothy Bragdon. Headmaster's wives usually complement the role of their hus- bands by serving as official hos- tesses. However, Mrs. Bragdon Cris, Katherine and Bill, Dad and Mom supplements Mr. Bragdon. Her warm hospitality and kindness add vital life to the community. Mrs. Bragdon enrolled in a student photography class. Although she did not have to take the exams, CSomething for which she is very gratefully she learned how to take and develop pictures. Her photo essays consisted of students, a collage of which hangs in the Mansion House kitchen. The true test of her rapport with students came with Open House - a test she passed with flying colors. Saturday nights, Mrs. Bragdon's homemade chocolate sauce simmers on the stoveg pancakes, pizzas, subs or donuts fill the kitchen with not just a pleasant aroma, but many students. Not only does she provide games - Trivial Pursuit, Monopoly, etc - but she feverishly competes with the students. Mrs. Bragdon gracious- ly adds these touches of home for the students. We are fortunate to have her grace the campus with such a thoughtfulf friendly and cheerful presence.

, -.1-Hg I , . f . 2, .p.-1..l.-. 1 It was some years before his death in 1762 that William Dummer. Lieutenant Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony realized that the colonies must produce their own leaders. It was for this purpose that he unselfishly left his home and lands for the establishment of a school which came into existence in the year 1763. This was the first act of many to follow over more than two centuries which have brought us to Governor Dummer Academy in the year 1984 . . . the Academy's two hundred twenty-first. It was William Dummer's thought that such a school would train young men for service to their fellow man. He could not be blamed for not realizing that those leaders would also be young women. The present school motto can be traced back by taking a quick look in Schumann Science Center where a plaque hangs by the west entry. This plaque tells of the generosity of seventy-one alumni who made possible the construction of Lang Gymnasium in 1925. In 1971, Lang Gym became Schumann Science Center. At the bottom of the plaque appears the phrase NON SIBI. SED ALIISH - Not for self, but for others. The year 1983-84 has seen a rebirth on the emphasis of growth - not just for one's own benefit, but so the indi- vidual may help others. We are greatful to Mr. Bragdon for bringing a great tradition of service into sharper focus by making an obscure phrase into the school motto - NON SIBI, SED ALIIS L. The four legs upon which a school stands are its faculty, its students and their parents. and its alumni. The Academy has been blessed in its re- cent history by having unique conti- nuity in its faculty. In the year 1930, Headmaster Ed- ward Eames brought new vitality to the school and a group of faculty who were to serve until their retirements over the past decade. This group be- came affectionately known as the Old Guard and included Mr. Eames, Ar- thur Sager, Mac Murphy, Tom Mer- cer and Ed Dunning. who were joined soon by Ben Stone, Buster Navins and eventually john Witherspoon. Mod- ern day governor Dummer was mol- ded by these men with their 304 years of service. A new Old Guard has now emerged with men of long service to the school and its students. They are still active and include Heb Evans. Dave Williams, Doug Miller, Bill Sperry and Bob Anderson. Their total time of service now amounts to one hundred fifty-two years of teaching.
