It is obvious to anyone who was here last year that the student body has a much more positive attitude, and is more enthusiastic towards the school. Mr. Bragdon has mastered the art of pep talks , and is accessible to the students. He has successfully turned the community in a new and better direction. For the first time in anyone's recollection, no one has been expelled from Governor Dum- mer by this point in the year. How many students can remember being inside the Mansion House, let alone being invited every Saturday night? These Open Houses make the Headmaster less 6 of a figure who can be seen only on rare occasions, but rather a person who can be communicated with and can provide assistance as a friend. This type of communication will prevent the chance of a rift separat- ing the student body and administra- tion, as happened in late February and early March of last year. Mr. Bragdon's open and positive attitude is his greatest contribution to the community. So, Mr. Bragdon, stand up in front of the school and take a well deserved bow. Courtesy of THE ACADEMY FREE PRESS Non sibi sed aliis. exemplifies a very important member of our community: Mrs. Dorothy Bragdon. Headmaster's wives usually complement the role of their hus- bands by serving as official hos- tesses. However, Mrs. Bragdon Cris, Katherine and Bill, Dad and Mom supplements Mr. Bragdon. Her warm hospitality and kindness add vital life to the community. Mrs. Bragdon enrolled in a student photography class. Although she did not have to take the exams, CSomething for which she is very gratefully she learned how to take and develop pictures. Her photo essays consisted of students, a collage of which hangs in the Mansion House kitchen. The true test of her rapport with students came with Open House - a test she passed with flying colors. Saturday nights, Mrs. Bragdon's homemade chocolate sauce simmers on the stoveg pancakes, pizzas, subs or donuts fill the kitchen with not just a pleasant aroma, but many students. Not only does she provide games - Trivial Pursuit, Monopoly, etc - but she feverishly competes with the students. Mrs. Bragdon gracious- ly adds these touches of home for the students. We are fortunate to have her grace the campus with such a thoughtfulf friendly and cheerful presence. .ibeclicafion , -4 sa,-K 5 Us M I 'QP Xl' Q ss, X 3..3'x ' ,t.' ', X 'bxwssg .i x VT vgyu . F' -N always ready to give a hand A person with a sense of humor can survive the boarding school lgfe, but the one who can regale his students and associates with an endless number of anecdotes that alleviate the daihf routine is a true contributor. A person who teaches the shills and techniques of a sport is a coach. A coach who does more than this is a mentor, giving generoushf of himself and his time Twelve years of dedicated efjfort have developed a first rate hockey program, and established a friendly atmosphere for twelve generations of boarding boys in Perhins dormitory. We, therefore, are proud to dedicate the 1984 IVULESTONE to an unselfish mentor and good Charles Stephen Harrington , -.1-Hg I , . f . 2, .p.-1..l.-. 1 It was some years before his death in 1762 that William Dummer. Lieutenant Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony realized that the colonies must produce their own leaders. It was for this purpose that he unselfishly left his home and lands for the establishment of a school which came into existence in the year 1763. This was the first act of many to follow over more than two centuries which have brought us to Governor Dummer Academy in the year 1984 . . . the Academy's two hundred twenty-first. It was William Dummer's thought that such a school would train young men for service to their fellow man. He could not be blamed for not realizing that those leaders would also be young women. The present school motto can be traced back by taking a quick look in Schumann Science Center where a plaque hangs by the west entry. This plaque tells of the generosity of seventy-one alumni who made possible the construction of Lang Gymnasium in 1925. In 1971, Lang Gym became Schumann Science Center. At the bottom of the plaque appears the phrase NON SIBI. SED ALIISH - Not for self, but for others. The year 1983-84 has seen a rebirth on the emphasis of growth - not just for one's own benefit, but so the indi- vidual may help others. We are greatful to Mr. Bragdon for bringing a great tradition of service into sharper focus by making an obscure phrase into the school motto - NON SIBI, SED ALIIS L. The four legs upon which a school stands are its faculty, its students and their parents. and its alumni. The Academy has been blessed in its re- cent history by having unique conti- nuity in its faculty. In the year 1930, Headmaster Ed- ward Eames brought new vitality to the school and a group of faculty who were to serve until their retirements over the past decade. This group be- came affectionately known as the Old Guard and included Mr. Eames, Ar- thur Sager, Mac Murphy, Tom Mer- cer and Ed Dunning. who were joined soon by Ben Stone, Buster Navins and eventually john Witherspoon. Mod- ern day governor Dummer was mol- ded by these men with their 304 years of service. A new Old Guard has now emerged with men of long service to the school and its students. They are still active and include Heb Evans. Dave Williams, Doug Miller, Bill Sperry and Bob Anderson. Their total time of service now amounts to one hundred fifty-two years of teaching. F RESI-IME The year started out with our Freshman picnic. This event was planned so that we could get ac- quainted with each other and we did just that. Our fall term was a very produc- tive one. We had Chessy Wood playing Varsity Soccer. Carla Rivela had a good part in the Fall play, Story Theater. The Thirds Soccer Team, with a majority of Freshmen players, had the best sub-varsity re- cord. The special characteristic of our class was seen by all - spirit. By the winter, we started to crank. There were many great activi- ties that took place. One highlight was the music concert, featuring tremen- dous performances by john Brennan, Carla Rivela and Kris Kobialka. Our sports teams had excellent seasons. Four fabulous Freshmen played Var- sity Hockey: Todd Crabtree, Andy Rockwell, Chris Hart and John Fos- dick. In addition to strong participa- tion in athletics, the Freshmen also contributed to the Winter Musical, Guys and Dollsf' Lisa Carrigg, Carla Rivela, and Kris Kobialka gave enthu- siastic performances. We had the first-ever G.D.A. tow- el sale which made an excellent profit for the Class. Some of this money was Ll . 10- 1--' e ' e Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle Dum 28 I' if ii .4 ix. f . . T r .,,., ,Q V. -Q . ry it . ,iri . R spent on the closed week-end and will be spent on a class trip. The Spring term looks prosper- ous in every area. Athletically, there are strong Freshmen players: Jona- than Blau, Varsity Tennis Team cap- tain: Tom johnson and Greg Wald- man, Varsity athletes. Schlolastically, Beth johnson and Peter Barton con- tinue to lead the class. Socially, we have planned another great picnic at Mr. Foster's house. To put it mildly, we have poten- tial. You can expect a lot from the Class of 1987 in years to come! 2' 47 O nl X. R 97-'12 'am le --uf. ,ill N y - an ',' '44.. I V :J -. A A . as My SOPHO ORES The up and coming class of 1986 displayed their maturity and young leadership through- out the entire school year. All ninety-nine members of the Sophomore class contributed to the Governor Dummer community: academ- ically, athletically, and theatrically. On the playing fields as well as on stage, sophomores performed in an exemplary man- ner. Over twenty sophomores achieved Honor Roll status at least once and nearly forty per- cent ofthe class made a varsity team while oth- er Hollywood bound sophomores held roles in the three drama productions. Led by President Paul Nardone, Vice President Steve Breiseth, Secretary Lindsay Seward, Boarding Rep. Bill Sweeney and Day Rep. Alex Marculewicz, the class achieved great financial success from their sell-out sale of G.D.A. winter hats. Highlighting the year was the Sophomore Closed Weekend in which the entire class pul- led together to organize one of the most fun-fil- led closed weekends of the year. It started off with the Friday Night Talent Show and ended with the exciting Ping-Pong tournament on Sunday. The Class of 1986 patiently awaits their turn to lead the school through another great year. .mx 'A J U IGRS The class of 1985 is made up of people from various backgrounds with a wide range of talents. The special quality of this class is its ability to come together to accomplish class ac- tivities such as the Junior Olympics and the Junior weekend. Class officers include president Anthony Fusco. vice-president Sam Blatchford, day rep. David Staren- sier, boarder rep. Rob Turner. and sec- retary treasurer Sean Mahoney. In addition to being a strong class as a unit, it is one of the most individu- ally talented classes in the school. A consistent group is found on the Honor Roll each quarter while a select few are found on the High Honor Roll. Also, key members of this year's dra- ma productions have been juniors. Not to mention the incredible athletic prowess that is possessed by the group. This year's junior class is a good one that as seniors will prove to be a great one. The Harriers did not go undefeat- ed, but they ran their hardest and competed with honor. While only winning four of its twelve regular sea- son meets, the team came alive during tournament play. At the Graves-Kel- sey Tournament, which includes thir- ten ISL schools and four southeastern New England prep schools, GDA came in sixth as a team and placed four individual wrestlers. Andrew Webber 1110 lbs.5, Gerry Tallman 11215, and Brian O'Dell 11675, all came home champions while Jim Tagg avenged three earlier losses and took third place at 115 lbs. Peter Condon 11335, David Gould 11305, and Greg Waldman 11455, also contributed to the team score with wins in the conso- lation bracket. Gentile The winter track team finished their final season with a mark of 0-4. The team was riddled with problems. To begin with, the team faced the real- ity that this was to be the last winter track team in the history of G.D.A. To lead this pack of tracksters on their fi- nal leg was coach John Friborg. From all reports, Coach Friborg lead these tracksters with pride and dignity. The team was a small, intense group of finely tuned athletes that met up with the proverbial league power houses. Throughout the season, the team's determination and dedica- tion kept them going when lesser teams would have crumbled. The team's motto sums up their general feelings: Never quit until you're on the bus. It was this type of thinking that held the squad together. Although success was scarce, one can- not judge the season on the record alone. The team had a lot more to offer than their record would indicate. DYN AST Y!! 4' P i f bfi? . Finishing the season with a good record, and winning the AISGA tournament clearly proved that we were the best. Our Success can be at- tributed to teamwork. We worked, played, and won as a team. When Ms. Clark began the sea- son, she thought of it as a building one. She taught us new formations that re- ally seemed impossible at first, but with so much talent coming up from J.V. we all knew that we had the po- tential to be the best. We all worked hard, and kept our spirits high. Although there were no stars on the team, there were many fine players. Kathy Lambert led the team as captain as well as on the floor: her key blocks and spikes always helped us through the tight spots. This is why she received the co-MVP along with Esmee Huggard, who led the team in overall serving. Meredith Lazo was the team's leading setter and was out- standing. Amy Hefford's lethal serves were always the nemesis of other teams. She once served almost an en- tire game, playing in 13 consecutive serves. When the tournament day finally came, we were readily prepared. ld flflig .II:i2?2 , F With revenge vowed against Mil- ton, we were going for the gold. It was either win this match or we were out of the tournament. We lost a close first game, only to get psyched for the sec- ond game. Whoever won the third match went to the finals. With the team working together as a well-oiled machine, we won with great perfor- mances by Kathie Lambert, Esmee Huggard, Meredith Lazo, Amy Hefford and the whole team Cespe- cially Ms. Clarkl. We entered the finals ready to draw blood. Lawrence was making a lot of noise and yelling We want it! But, we just thought. You can't al- ways get what you want! This proved to be true because in just two quick games, we wiped them out! r'-Qi Q v. S 5. as-. 4 In s I if af Varsity Men's Ice Hockey - A rr ,- i'i'f4:5 fill a Qfifaf A 1 'Q 9 ' f First row: Q. Excellent performance in meets was not the main goal this year: only six mem- bers of the program returned, three of whom were varsity members. And al- though we always finished last and almost beat Lawrence, there were some fantastic finishes. Jeff Kelly's third at Middlesex was a commendable performance and jill Twomey's fifth at Concord was certainly a memorable finish. However, this year was concentrated coaching and earning everyones respect. His patience and Mrs. I-Iaack's dedication kept the team together. Completely a building and learning year. we have hope for a promising season next year. We had our fun this year: next year we will work hard because we're look- ing for success. N,S TRACK xeN Captains John Giantis, Mike DiModica, Charley Cashin, and John Cummings with Coaches Ed Rybicki, Dave Abusamra, and Packy Fusco D It was a tough season. The 1984 Spring Track Team won it's first two meets, but then lost the next five. The team was the victim of incredible mis- fortune. Six top runners in both the sprint and distance squads fell prey to illness and injury just before the Inter- scholastic Championship. Neverthe- less the team gutted it out and came up with a respectable eighth out of fif- teen schools, some of which were Class A schools. The won-loss record did not re- flect the character of the people on the team. The distance squad worked in- credibly hard in the rain and heat led by Capt. John Giantis and Coach Ab- usamra. The Sprint and jump squad fought hard under the leadership of Coach Rybicki and Captains John Cummings and Charlie Cashin. This book had more than it's share of prob lems and took nearly three years to complete. It was just one in a series of books that fell prey to lack of commit ment and responsibility by those stu dents responsble for it's completion Production began to fall behind sched ule mid-way through the 1983-1984 school year and most people quickly became discouraged and disinterest ed. When school closed in June of 1984, the 1984 MILESTONE was less than one-third complete. Members of the 1985 MILESTONE staff were able to make some progress with the 1984 book. The class of 1984 showed little interest in assisting with their book In the spring of 1986 I ap proached Mr Miller and told him that I wanted to see the book finished be cause I had already spent a great deal of time on it senior year In April I be gan working first by completing the sports section with what was avail able Most of june and July was spent in the darkroom printing photographs for the organizations and events sec tions During the month of August Kim Grillo and I completed these sec tions while Mr Miller finished the commencement and senior sections We hope you enjoy this book If you don t well Michael D1M0dlCa The class of 1984 ,I n ills. if ' i 7 J. Eames so that the qualities they so deeply prized might be prized in turn by future and succeeding classes, 172 The following commcll were taken hum rc- marks by the Headmaster and members nl the faculty The Morse Flag The Morse Flag was first awarded seventy-one years ago at the 150th Commencement of this school on june 9, 1913, and it has been awarded each year since that time to the se- nior whose record in all respects has met with the approval of the faculty. According to the trust established by the late Glen Tilley Morse, a long time friend and Trustee of the Acad- emy, a new flag is proveded each year in order that the old flag which has flown over the school during the past year may be given to a member of the graduating class. One of the true measures of a presence on our campus is the leg- acy left behind when graduation sends one of our own off. The leg- acy of this member of the Class of '84 is immense and it is indelible. She came to our community four years ago and immediately estab- lished herself as a presence on the stage with her fierce concentration and poise beyond her years . . . A member of Red Key, a member of The Chorus, Drama and Math Clubs, and Honor Society, a Se- nior Proctor. President of her Class . . . Founder of the Acad- emy's first dance troupe, the leg- acy will not only include this visi- ble troupe which will bear her name, but the grace and vivacity with which her many honors were achieved. ROECHELLE LEVETTE SMITH One of the many items of advice given to me by my predecessor, jack Ragle, was to keep this young man from doing too much. Obviously, I failed in this area as the recipient of this award culminated years of ser- vice . . .
