He held great respect and admiration for its traditions, but he also had many dreams of the changes and improvements that could be made. Eleven years later, many of those dreams are realities. He has been with Governor Dummer through a decade of growth and alteration: a decade which has seen the establishment of coeducation and a flourishing arts program. Through his continued efforts, the school's facilities have been considerably improved. Yet thatis not for what he will be chiefly remembered. The lasting impression that the students and alumni will carry is of a cheerful smile, tireless patience, an oft-visible presence at athletic events. He is a peaceful and kind man, who felt a deep concern for each and every student in his care. He had a difficult job, one that was not always well-understood. Yet he executed it in a way which commanded respect, and he never failed in his understanding of the student body. For that, for his unceasing effort and dedication, and especially for his deep commitment to the school and her students, we wish health and happiness in the years to come, and dedicate the 1983 Milestone to: Iohn Williams Ragle ' f Mr. Ragle at a talent show during the '70's: one of the many ways he contributed to the community. ? The class, led by President Harry Taormina, Vice-President Brett Engel, Day Representative Christine Romboletti, Boarder Re- presentative Hilary Seward, and Secretary-Treasurer Kristen MacK- enzie, started the year off success- fully. By late Fall, the class had collected about S1500 through the sale of G.D.A. sweatshirts. 68 On the playing field as well as on stage, juniors played a sig- nificant role in representing the school. this year's varsity teams were flooded with talented juniors displaying their skills and helping to maintain team unity. On stage, juniors were a common sight, as they obtained several lead roles and entertained the school with their musical talents. E., ra.: The planning for this year's junior Carnival took a while to get underway, but, led by Miss Letvin- chuck, Class Advisor, the juniors united to produce a successful and fun day. The Carnival was backed by a raffle which literally filled the class's bank account. Because of this financial success, the rest of the Carnival was geared towards hav- ing fun instead of making money. T Y, 5' s. t The juniors look on to next year with great enthusiasm and expecta- tion. Those soon to be seniors will prove to be leaders in '84, Haw' -4 Although academically the class did not appear as strong as in the past, placing only two students, Kathleen Lambert and Henry Long on the High Honor Roll, as opposed to last year's eight, many of the students did achieve unusually high scores on the SATS. As a whole, the class seemed well prepared to begin the college struggle. 69 Q. NF 1 The class of 1985 is filled with diverse talents. After having almost doubled in size since freshman year, the sophomore class is the largest in the school. Many students have excelled in various areas during the year: athletics, academics, and drama. Class officers were Sam Blatch- ford, President, Alex Konovalck, Vice-President: Anna Hill, Board- ing Student Representative, David Starensier, Day Student Represen- tativeg and Sean Mahoney, Secret- aryfTreasurer. In academics, thirty-one students made the honor roll at least once. Eight sophomores achieved high honors. These students were Sue Edelstein, George Hasapidis, Ieff Kelly, Rob Lessard, Peter Quimby, Katrina Russo, Ieanne Smith, and Ion Shain. Several students showed their talents by performing in the drama productions: Tartuffe, The Boy- friend, and 1984. Participants from the sophomore class were Chris Chance, Vicki DeLisle, Melissa Huffsmith, David Kagan, Kate Kaplan, Roslyn Pechet, Peter Quimby, Donna Stram, and Blake Underhill. The sophomore class has many outstanding athletes. Anthony Fus- co, Anna Hill, Alex Konovalchik, Nolden Iohnson, and Curtis Scribner amassed three varsity letters each. Steve Barrett, Steve Bucknall, Tom DiNanno, Amy I-Iefford, Esmee Huggard, Meredith Lazo, Quinn Pollock, David Staren- sier, and Mike Terrile each played on two varsity teams. There were twenty-one other students who received single varsity letters. The class of 1985 is well- rounded and contains many diverse and gifted students. The most outstanding feature of this class is its closeness and unity which will be further displayed in the years to come. 5-.U nxt., 32 ,ir A iiqwx , YL twygk f - - ' - . ---- SNK , 5 - N: , 'Xi , Q Lf E K T K , , K1 ' +R yr,-N 3 V - g , K 'P q,,,g,5 wsu: .. 5 gi . It was success not only in academics, but also in sports. Rob Studley was awarded a Varsity letter in all three seasons- soccer, hockey and lacrosse. Rob DeLena was able to make varsity cross country and varsity baseball. A similar performance gave them another win against Concord Academy. The third game, however was lost due to lack of unity on the floor and Lawrence's home crowd. With increased efforts, the Gover- nors ran a string of eight straight wins before a close loss to B-B8rN. Thus the season ended with a 9-2 record and a league leading tie with B-B8zN. The newly formed, eight team Association of Independent School Girls' Athletics provided the Red Team with its first tournament opportunity. The team won handily against Dana Hall, Milton and Chauncey Hall, but the big match was against B-B8zN who were disposed of 15-4 and 15-11. There were many fine individual perfor- mances as well as great team play. Amy Welch and Laura Koffman shared setting duties, while Amy Hefford came through by serving with 95070 success. Especially out- standing, as she was all season, Sue Towler demonstrated why she was chosen by Coach Clark as the team's MVP. She was strong throughout the season both in service and play as well as being a great leader as team captain. Ending with a 13-2 overall mark, the season was outstanding in terms of performance, but also it was outstanding in terms of fun. The performance of these sixteen players placed them third in the league, flatly discrediting the pre-season projection of other coaches that G.D.A. would finish seventh, at best, in the eight team division. The team's excellence was most clearly displayed by the MVP line of seniors: Chris Laganas, Dan McLaughlin, and Peter Riley - to date, the higlhest scoring line in G.D.A. history. The tenacity of C in , the aggressiveness of Dan, and the play-makin ability of Peter contributed greatly to the play and helped set the tone of the team. Certainly it was not without the Gold and Green lines that the senior Red line was able to lead the team to its 11-5-1 season. The tearn's Gold line was made up of David Wheeler, sure to produce the needed goal: Nolden Iohnson, winner of the Coach's Award for exemplary playg and this year's only freshman, Rob Studley. Senior Mark Kagan and sophomores Pat Bennett and Steve Barrett of the Green line developed well their offensive play and defensive coverage. Also, Curt Scribner showed his versatility in being able to skate both as a defenseman and as a winger on the Gold line. The defensive play of senior defenseman Will Adams and Chris Frangos combined with the strong pairing of Ted Werner and Iohn Hurley assured that these four could be depended upon. Senior goaltender Kevin Cryts' aggressiveness and poise was a reassurance to the whole team. The cross-country ski team thrived this year, under coaches Ms. Corcoran and Mr. Clagett. They prepared for meets according to Mr. White's traditional dry-land training, including stretching and fun Fridays . After December, Mr. Welch took over for Mr. Clagett, bringing with him his enthusiasm and new ideas, such as jump-roping and ultimate frisbee. Anyone on the Olde Newbury golf course in the afternoon would have seen twenty-five people snow-bounding , or running with poles only. As the season progressed, the air grew colder and fur caps appeared, but still the team was forced to continue with dry-land work-outs. Calder, S. Aizenstark, H, Lapham, A. Berghager. For many, this was their first time on skis. In light of this inexperience, the team can be proud of their efforts. They skiied in all conditions, including rain, snow, and subzero cold. Confused starts, broken ski poles, lost mittens, and furious yells of Track, track! were integral parts of the season. Although many seniors are leaving, the team will have more experience next year. With the help of the coaches, the team will continue to flourish, and hopefully repeat its successes of 1983. 106 Captains H. Williams, T. Malay, and B. Calder with Coach Welch. MVPS H. Laganas and Hoffman were the first and third highest scorers respectively in New England Division I. Both were invited to play in the All-Star game at Northfield-Mt. As Co-captains, these two not only supplied many goals and assists, but also provided leadership and support for their teammates. The season started off well with two easy wins over Lawrence and Rivers. At Rivers, Laganas set two G.D.A. records-most points in a game, 14, and most goals in a game with 10. Many times the team got off to a slow start at the beginning of the game and had to fight their way back from a point deficit. Despite this problem and injuries to several key members of the team, they ended with an even record of 7-7. It was young and inexperienced: ten of its fourteen members were underclassmen, and only four were returning lettermen. These were Iohn Gibbs, Dave Starensier, Harry Taormina, and Kevin Cryts. Their experience provided the team with stability and leadership. Players up from the I.V. team were Steve Shula, Burke Leavitt, Chris Nesbit, Ieff Knight, Ron Liss, and Andy Gibbs. New students Tony F usco, Mike Huggard, Rob Delanea, and Rob Turner proved to be valuable additions. The team did manage to have a good season with a record of 6-9, but it was a hard battle all the way. Discouragingly, the team lost many of its games in the later, even in the last, inning. Often practices were concelled due to inclement weather, which hurt both hitting and fielding. However, out of this season's inexperience and difficulties came a much improved team. Next year's team will have the returning lettermen and the unity necessary to contend for the top places in the league. Every person worked well with the others to form a unit. There were no individuals, and spectators often commented on the fine display of team work they had witnessed. This team was definitely a comeback squad. Down at the half sometimes by six or seven goals, the team would pull through together, only time preventing them from winning. Organizations Did you know that there are forty-one clubs, organizations, and activities listed in the Guide issued by Mr. Glickstein? Not everything goes as an- ticipated in hardly anything, but a good many of those organizations did enjoy a good and productive year. Of course, there were some things which succumbed to the pressures of require activities and other priorities. This year the Milestone had more than its share of difficulties. Frequent intrusions on the A-period by a variety of distractions made the job of putting out the book very difficult. It was particularly difficult to take pictures of many of the organizations. Write-ups of group activities were hard to come by. There were instances of non- performance of duties which left the Editor crippled. Athletic teams cannot win 134 without a full commitment by every member of the team. Play produc- tions are inferior unless cast and crew give their all. Governor Dummer has a history of perfor- mance at 110070 on the fields, in the classrooms and in extra-curricular activities. This has not always been the case in the year 1982 - 1983. In late August and early September, this final portion of the book to be assembled is the most difficult due to lack of materials. It is hoped that you will enjoy what there is here and if your favorite activity is not represented, attribute it to lack of commitment somewhere by someone. Miracles really are only the result of extra-hard work. Go forward with determination and perform your own miracles. It takes only a modicum of talent and 110070 commitment. D. L. The by-laws of the society state that to be eligible for election a student must maintain a minimum standing of eighty percent during his Members Of senior year and must stand in the upper fifth of his class. A three-fourths vote of the faculty members is necessary for electiong and the members are pledged to consider each candidates record during the earlier years of his secondary school work, his diligence, particular abilities and deficiencies, and the nature and the number of courses upon which his average is based. Support has in- creased as student interest has, and facilities are rapidly improving. The wider range of options and op- portunities are all greatly appreciat- ed by the student body, and beyond doubt make G.D.A. a school of broader ideals and outlook. Perhaps the most significant achievement in the area of the arts is the planned Arts Center. This will bring improved facilities and a new central location, rescuing the studio from the basement to which it has hitherto been relegated. Already this year the two new art instructors, Miss Corcoran and Mrs. Marculewicz, accomplished artists themselves, have brought new visions and new ideas, including a live model and a pottery class. This innovation, especially given the freedom of a new arts center, will undoubtedly produce spectacular results in future. Always a popular class, photo- graphy, too, is flourishing this year. Miss Dudley's students, armed with cameras, are a familiar sight around campus, snapping pictures of scenes, games, and people, whether they like it or not. The performing arts have especially increased in strength recently. The Friday night concerts have become a school-wide social event, featuring students' talent in dance, voice, and instrumental performance. The three dramatic performances are unquestionably highlights of each season, and participation in this area is increas- ing. Indeed, the popularity of the dance program has almost over- reached the capacity of the present facilities. With a new instructor, Ms. Donna Roaf, and a new style, Luigi jazz, this year's recital was unques- tionably one of the best ever, and dance is now firmly established at G.D.A. 1982-83 saw another change in this areag the appearance of male dancers. This is a good sign that Governor Dummer is breaking away from old-fashioned traditions. However, it is fast establishing new ones, and the excellence of the music department is one of them. Offering everything from classes in music theory to lessons in guitar, this department, too, is fast increas- ing in numbers of participants. Its two leaders, Ms. julie Soloway and Mr. Christopher Stowens, have cultured much enjoyment and talent over the years, and have produced such excellent perform- ing groups such as the Slight Breeze jazz band and the Academy Eight singers. Last, but by no means least, is the Drama Department. Every year there are three full-scale produc- tions: two plays and a winter musical. This year, the selections were Moliere's Tartuffe, the high- spirited The Boyfriend, and the student-directed spring play 1984. Mr. Laurence Tretler is in his second year as director and head of the department, and Mr. Reed is in charge of the Tech Crew. The success of the arts at G.D.A. is mainly due to the enthusiasm, dedication, and hard work of all student participants and their respective leaders. Their efforts have made G.D.A. a more well-rounded school capable of producing more well-rounded students. They have provided, and will continue to provide, this community with all the magic and enjoyment of the arts. ! Q 3 E 5 I i I I E i S V Y r 1 w Fall Production Tartuffe The Cast Mme. Upon the retirement of Headmaster Ted Eames in 1959 the underclassmen of the Academy endowed the already existing Academy Prize so that henceforth at each commencement it could be given in honor of Edward W and Eleanor K. Eames so that the qualtities they so deeply prized might be prized in turn by future and succeeding classes. There are captains and there are captains - Some are elected because of their gifts as athletes, and if they lead at all, it is solely by exampleg some, unhappily, are elected because they are popular, not because of what they can or should do for the team, then there are those who have ability, if not gifts, who rise to the top of their sport by hard, often painful, effort, but who all the way along are concerned to help their teammates, to encourage, to build unity and spirit. When these qualities extend beyond a sport into the way in which an individual leads his life, then the community is enriched, indeed. The winner of the Academy Prize tonight has displayed throughout his four years at Governor Dummer contagious interest and enthusiasm - in the words of one of his teachers, he is a charming cheerer-upper - he is a giver rather than a taker, and with all this he has humility. For four years he has wrestled on the varsity. For the past two years while he has been a co-Captain, his teams have come together in a way that the uninitiated might not associate with what appears to be an individual sport. Last year they won the climactic end-of-season tournament for the first time in nineteen years. This year they won the New Englands. For his exemplary leadership and his contagious joie de Vivre, the Academy Prize goes to Alexander Packard Cawley As we move into these last hours of the Academy year, culminating in an array of well-earned awards, I am always acutely aware that the distinction which accompanies an award depends not only upon the qualities of the winner, but just as much upon the strength of the competition - the merits of those who came close. In this year's class there are many whose qualities won them serious consideration though not, in the end, a prize itself. Because this has been true, each actual recipient deserves our heightened respect and admiration. john W. According to the trust established by the late Rev. Glenn Tilley Morse, a long-time friend and Trustee of the Academy, a new flag is provided each year in order that the old flag which has flown over the school during the past year may be given to a member of the graduating class. She is a doer - but one comes upon her contributing quietly in a vast variety of enterprises. Four years a key member of the school chorus: four years a tour guide for the Admissions Officeg three years a student tutor: inducted into the Cum Laude Society as a juniorg the Governor Dummer Honor Society, recognizing leader- ship, the Community Service Program, where she was an organizer as a school aide: three years in the Red Key Society of student hosts and hostesses, and as a senior one of the most quietly effective co-Chairmen of Red Key in my eleven yearsg in the Bible Study Fellowship, and the Washington Workshop: a point- winner on this year's New England independent School women's championship track team, and one of the two quarterbacks on this year's championship volleyball team - these credentials are all real. They represent time and energy devoted, care bestowed, loyalty to friends and school. What's more, they have not interfered with attainment of a place among the top three scholars in her class, of recognition through a National Merit Letter of Commendation - or of admission to that venerable leven though a full six years junior to Governor Dummer Academyl an exalted institution of higher learning on the New Hampshire banks of the Connecticut River. The recipient of the Morse Flag for 1983 is Amy Sue Welch The Thorndike Hilton Cup was estab- lished by the Class of 1919 in memory of their Classmate, Thorndike Hilton. It is awarded each year to the ranking scholar in the Senior Class. With this cup goes a silver medal. Last year recognition as the ranking scholar in the Senior Class was earned by a young man who had excelled, as well, as a musician, a pianist. This year the palm is due to another young man, who for the past two years has had a lock on the top spot in his class. For this period he has an adjusted grade-point average of 4.23 considering that the Academy employs a 4 point scale, that is not too shabby ! It is gratifying when, as last year, the Thorndike-Hilton Cup winner offers more than one dimension. This year's recipient has displayed several. It goes without saying that he is a National Merit Finalist and a member of the Cum Laude Society, however, as Co-ordinator of the Student Tutoring Service he has displayed with calmness and warmth his interest in others. This same quality has been evident in track, where he has fallen just short of the school record in the pole vault, for this year the pole vaulters were essentially without a coach. Aaron assumed the responsibility and guided his fellow vaulters to one-two-three finishes in virtually every dual meet. Finally, his support brought a teammate into third place in this year's New England Interscholastic championships - one place behind himself.
