At Governor Dummer one such man has been beneficial in many capaci- ties through his versatility, his efficiency and his rare blend of humor and wis' dom. His precise but relaxed coaching, coupled with his genuine interest for the well-being of the students, makes him a true friend. Similarly, his informal, yet still resolute, instruction of mathematics produces many stimulated and success- ful students. Certainly no one will soon forget his extraordinary sense of humor. Lincoln Center YT 5 I ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The production of a yearbook is the result of many long hours of work by many people. The board of THE 1967 MILESTONE is not solely responsible for the publication but is indebted to many people: Mr. Douglas Miller who has faithfully stood by us to help Whenever he could. Mr. Richard Weir, the representative of the American Yearbook Company, who has aided us in the actual production. Mr. Roy Hult of Hult Studios in Melrose whose excellent photogra- phy has improved the quality of the book. Mrs. Marjorie Rouisse for her accounting and bookkeeping. Miss Louise Lovell, Miss Sylvia B. Lunt, and the entire oilice staff for their special information. The MILESTONE staH for their assistance in the tedious areas of yearbook production. V ra-:lg,,,,gg.:g 1 FR Varsity Baseball Governor Dummer Baseball, until two years ago, lacked any respect or support from the people con- nected with it. Then, in 1966, under the superb coaching powers of Mr. Sargent, the team triumphed to tie for first place in its lea fue. The prospects for 1967 looked equally good witfh ten re- turning lettermen and the tremendous reassurance gained from the previous season. In the first game, a strong and complete team smothered Rivers 15-0. At this early point in the year though, injuries be- gan to take their toll, culminating with star Shelton Sacks contracting mono and with co-captain XVin- nie Burt breaking his leg during practice. Still early in the season, a weakened and apprehensive team faced Bc'SzN and was winning 8-1 at the start of the last inning. Theg turning point of the season was then, when the Governors cracked under the pres- sure and lost 9-8. Said co-captain Ray Huard after 'the season, If it hadn't been for Nobles, we might have gone all the way. Struggling against this mor- al defeat, the team nevertheless salvaged a winning season and boasted many excellent personal achievements. To be noted are Manson Smith who had a strong year both batting and fielding and fel- low Sophomore Billy Strider, one of the co-captains for 19625. Pitching were Ray, The WVaterville VVon- der Huard, who filled in at three other ositions during the year and Roger Block who helii a tre- H1Cl1d0l1S 1.50 eamed run avera e. gon Schaefer, the second co-captain for 1968. irc e the school batting record with a .440 average. In fact. the team batted .263 and according to Huard were the best hittin 1 team in the league. The biggest single feat though was the coaching of Mr. Sargent over the last two years. Working with Mr. Martin as an assistant in '66 and by himself in '67, he brought a team with a notoriously bad record to a venerable position in Governor Dummer athletics. To quote Bay Huard once more. this time at the varsity awards assembly for 1967. I don't mean to degrade Lacrosse in any way, but I honestlv think that Base- ball commands as much respect ih the spring now as Lacrosse does. fi.: 5,,.,,3 Vx w. 134 .- ' ..-.f7YvgWi 53 .WC--4' Ku- . ,u!..g351G?i 5 ,I 11 1 J- I 1 3 in vwuf- W- s , 3. ,, w.. v 1 4' MQ, A - 4, M 'ri +'vf 1 iii? .QM A-?:,,gf1'T1Qf e V '-Qi!-5, if 2- Q,-if 'L' '11, . 4 I. According to the trust established by the late Reverend Glenn Tilly Morse, long-time friend and trustee of the Acade- my, a new flag is provided each year in order that the old flag which has flown during the past year may be given to a member of the graduating class. This year the Morse Flag is awarded to RAY JO- SEPH HU.-XRD of XVATERVILLE, MAINE. The Coodwin Athletic Prize, established by Mr. Fred H. Goodwin of the Class of 1916, and a trus- tee of the Academy' from 1916 to 1949. is given to 1 150 the senior who. by athletic achievement and sports- manship. has brought the greatest honor to his school during the past year. Much of what I have to say about the recipient of this prize has already been recounted this morn- ing. A three-sport varsity athlete. a captain in two sports and Most Valuable Player in three. he has in- deed been outstanding. However. my mind turns again to his tremendous dedication to his teams. his 10006 effort, his pose and sportsmanship. Never have I seem him visibly rattled: never have I wit- nessed a flare-up of uncontrolled anger or poor con- duct. He has been a credit to himself. his teams. and his school. This year's recipient is RAY IO- SEPH HEARD of XYATERYILLE. MAINE. l The Ingham Fund Scholarship is awarded to help an industrious and able boy work his way through school. The recipient this year is ION SCHAEFER of WEST DENNIS. The Richard Hawes Francis Scholarship is award- ed to LEO BARRETT of NEXYBURYPORT, who has made substantial intellectual progress and who has demonstrated a spirit of cooperation and help- fulness during his school life. The Cumings Prize was established by the fa- mily and friends of the late Fred T. Cumings of Troy, New Hampshire. It is awarded annually to a boy who has shown perseverance, hard work, and good spirit overcoming obstacles and disappoint- ments. ship to a boy who could not attend the school without large financial assistance 1 v and who shows strong promise for the future. It is a six-year grant, covering two years of secondary school and four years of college. It is a great pleasure for me to award this first Merrill Scholarship to VICTOR MAX BOND of HENDERSON, NORTH CAROLINA. J., s In his academic work and in his athletics, he has the same drive, determination, and courage. Ile has succeeded where fainter hearts would have failed. XYheu this prize was established, I suspect the Cumings family had in mind just such a young man as XYINSTON SIl.l, HURT of NYESTON. The Dean Channing Hale Scholarship is awarded to that student who, through his own perseverance, has shown the most improvement in the various as- pects of school life and has become an esteemed contributor to the well-being of the community. This year's recipient is STEPHEN Mac-DONALD MURPHY of SOUTH BYFIELD. During the past year the Charles E. Merrill Trust has established the Charles E. Merrill School-College Schol- arship Program to benefit a member of the junior class possessing strong intellectual ability and determination to take full advantage of his educational opportunities. Covemor Dummer is one of a small number of schools to which the Foimdation has made available such a scholar- 5 if iEllill'llIlil .1 The Gaffney Prize. established in memory of Robert A. Gaffney' of the Class of 1940. is awarded to that senior who, in the opinion of his teachers. has been most considerate of the rights. opinions. and sensibilities of others. And so it is with partie- ular pleasure that I award the Gaffney Prize to RICHARD CRAAVFORD of HINCHAM. The james M. Barriskill Prize. established in 1960 by the students in memory of Mr. Barriskill of the faculty, is awarded annually to that member of the senior class who has made an outstanding con- tributuion in the field of musie at the Academy. This year's recipient is THEODORE HOAYARD DIX of COLLEGE STATION. TEXAS. 152 The Harvard Prize Book has been endowed by Nlr. Roger B. Coulter. Class of 191133. and a tmstee of the Aeadeiny. so that it may be awarded eaeh year in the future. The Book is awarded to that member of the ju- nior elass deemed most worthy' through high schol- arship and character. The winner this year has held to the highest standards as a consistent honor stu- dent. a member of the Red Key Honor Society and the staff of the Spire This summer his commit- ment to service will take him with our group going to work on the Indian reservation in North Dakota. It is my pleasure to award the Harvard Prize Book to ROBERT TONIBAREL MARTIN of MEL- ROSE. The Timothy Rogers WVittemore Award is .given annually to that member of the sophomore class who by his attitude and perseverance has been the best contribution to the Academy. XVILLIAM STRIDER of NVATERVILLE, MAINE, is just such a boy. Four years ago there arrived at the Academy a young man whom I had known for many years. I felt sure he would be successful here, but the facts and figures gave no indication of the degree of his success. His career has been marked by a dedication to all aspects of student life. A member of Cum Laude, three-sport varsity athlete and co-captain in two, Chairman of the Library Committee, he has achieved both the highest academic distinction and Y' xls v 2 ff fl I ll gnc' athletic success, and he has demonstrated a keen sense of responsibility. A brilliant example of achievement through dedication and perseverance is HARPER FOLLANSREE, IR. of ANDOVER. XVin- ner of the First Special Prize. NVe read a great deal these days about the de- cline of principles and values among our youth. I doubt this is so, and my opinion is well substantiat- ed by many of our students. Ilowever, one of them does stand out for his high standards and willingness to fight for them. In addition, he has distinguished himself as a scholar, as an editor of the Spire, and as an excellent wrestler. In the years ahead he will continue to have strong impact on those around him in raising their sights and standards to meet his own. The recipient of the Second Special Prize is DA- VID SNONV LEXVIS of CROTON. The Third Special Prize is awarded to a senior who embodies the old adage about good things in small packages. VVhere he has found the time and energy to accomplish so much I scarcely know. In each 24- hour day he has mustered the effort to earn election to Cum Laude, serve as editor of the Governor , Chairman of the Language Lab, President of the Clee Club, and dormitory proctor, compete on even terms with larger rivals in football, wrestling, and tennis, and serve as Captain of the latter. I am weary just recounting all this, but also very proud to present this prize to DANIEL MURRAY MOR- GAN of SHREYVSBURY. 15 We all admire the individual who will stand up for ideas and principles in which he believes. VS'e also take pride in those who make great progress through conscientiousness and an unwillingness to quit when the going gets rough. In academics. in wrestling, as a dormitory proctor. this young man has earned our admiration and I take pride in hon- oring him tonight. The recipient of the Fourth Spe- cial Prize is ROGER THOMSON BLOCK of FITCHBURC. There are areas of school life in which our stu- dents can make their mark and gain a feeling of sat- isfaction. The winner of the Fifth Speical Prize has excelled in art. He is fortunte, for he has discovered an interest and a talent which will enrich his future life. However, he is also recognized tonight for his unusual conscientiousness, his ability to overcome adversity, and his loyalty to groups of which he has been a part and to the school. The recipient of this prize is IEFFERY NVALLINCFORD NVOOD of OLD TOXVN, MAINE. The Sixth Special Prize goes to one of our out- standing scholar-athletes. He has set high standards for himself in both of these areas and met them ad- mirably. A strong student, he has also been one of the finest wrestlers in the annals of the school and an excellent captain. Furthermore, he has accepted responsibility well in his senior duties and has dem- onstrated an independence of mind so important to his future contributions in college and career. I am very pleased to present this prize to JAMES CHRISTIE NEVIUS of RED BANK, NEXV JER- SEY. The last, but by no means the least, Special Prize goes, to a senior who has made maximum use of his abilities to improve his own performances and to serve his school. Neither a strong student nor an unusually gifted athlete, nonetheless he has achieved academic success and has made great con- tributions to three varsity teams as performer and captain of all three. But most of all he has given full mea- sure of his time and energy in his role as Vice President of the class. Loyalty, courage perseverance, concern for his fellows and his school, these qualities have been paramount in his life at the academy. It is my great pleasure to award this Special Prize to NVILLIAM LEE ALFOND of WATERVILLE, MAINE. .QQ wg VA ,, af' - A jf, 1,H:1N J 'l P' l For many years, the Academy Prize was main- tained hy the mother of Headmaster Emeritus Ed- ward NV. Eames. In june 1959, the underclassmen of the Academy endowed this prize so that hence- forth at each Commencement it could he given in honor of Edward VV. and Eleanor K. Eames so that the qualities they so deeply prized might he prized in turn hy future and succeeding classes . It is awarded to that senior who hv' his unselfness and 5, . 4 3 ry., , . sportsmanship has heeu exemplified the spirit of the school. In presenting the prize. Sir. Vtilkie said: A strong student. a fine three-sport athlete. an editor of the SPIRE. But of greater importance he has led the school with thoughtfulness. and with strength. with tact and with consideration. The recipient of the Academy Prize is ANTHONY R. H. CERARD of BERNARDSVILLE.
