The board is not solely responsible for the production of The 1964 illilrxforzr. There are others whom we wish to thank for their help: Mrs. Marjorie Rouisse for her accounting and bookkeeping. lNtIiss Louise Lovell and the entire oflice staff for their special in- fonnation. hir. Richard Wfeir, the representative from the American Yearbook Company, who aided us in the actual production of the book. Mr. Roy Hult of Hult Studios in Rielrose whose excellent photo- graphy has improved the quality of the book. The rllilcstone staff for their assistance in the tedious areas of the production of the book. Our advertisers without whom the book would have been an im- possibility. Mr. Douglas L. Miller who has faithfully stood by us to help whenever he could. He has added respon- sibilities, and he begins to help strengthen the reputa- tion of the academy in all respects. Each junior begins to realize that college admission is harder than it seems and that it requires his utmost effort. As well. he has ample opportunity to aid the success of the school athletic teams. He learns what it means to be an integral part of a team. and he learns what rewards determination. He must prepare himself. also. to take over publications and activities in the coming year. hfany juniors have made outstanding contributions to the school this year. Academically. Russ Thomas, Rick lVilson, and Brock Callen have shown proli- ciency. The athletic teams have been fortunate to have Tim Browne, Scott Magrane, Bill Russell. Steve Rolfe, and Ralph Sexton. The functioning of the school and the success of the student government depends a great deal on the junior class. They play an important role in school life, and they will be the leaders next year. Their job thus far has been the preparation for their assign- ments in the future as seniors. tk. EQ. 36. Ji. His tear-liers expect more from liilu, and his free time becomes much more liniited than before. The sophomore year tests each student to see il' he can adjust to a more rigorous academic schedule. There is less tinie for fun. and the sophomore begins to realiye that prepar- ing for college is not going to be an easy chore. This sophomore class has contributed significantly to the acacleniy. perhaps a little more than sophomore classes ol' the past. One of the top scholars in the school is Dave Stevens. 21 uieiuber of this class, and inany other sophornores are consistently on the honor roll. .Xthletic teauis have been fortunate to have the services of Tirn Rlaier. .Xncly Leonard, Dave Hartz, and Ford Schumann. It is hard for these freshmen to sit doxm and study every night, but most of them make the grade. Freshman year has many purposes, but there are two very important ones. First, the freshman must be taught self-discipline. He must learn how to study and when to study. Secondly. he must apply himself if he wishes to continue at school. This is sometimes a very difficult task, but it is an invaluable experience, To many, freshman year is a great shock, but a profitable endeavor. The first year is a great awaken- ing for many, but it is also a very necessary part of the educational efforts of this institution. Now is the time for these boys to start preparing for the road that lies ahead. The latest method of transportatzon or Moody 4 I v ACTIVITIES the partxcxpatlon THE ILE T0 E NN! On May 14. they sang for the New York Aluinni Organization and spent the night at the Wfaldorf. The following day they perfonned at the New England Pavilion and the RCA Pavilion, and they returned to school that night. The Glee Club was a success because of the efforts of Mr. Sager, the diligent practices, and the willingness on the part of all to work. Everyone liked the variety of engagements and all were satished with the results. Harris to talk about ziarious ajairs dealing zeith the religion 0 our time. This year a number of select seniors were chosen to par- ticipate in the Religious Discussion group. Meeting in two sections each Sunday. these seniors discussed some of the major religious problenis of our tiine. Most of the prograins were centered around the interests of the students. Each week one senior prepared a short talk on which the discussion was based. Special progranis were arranged with outside speakers. Lecturers representing niany different faiths presented a variety of beliefs and religious traditions. Noted speakers, such as Monsignor Francis Lally, spoke not only for the beneht of this group. but also for the school. Credit must be given to hir. Harris for regulating these discussions and bringing guest speakers to the school. His work and the work of those involved inade this year's group a profitable experience. 65 F , X J 1 Air. However, Milton managed to tie the score, and they won it on a breakaway in the Hnal minutes of the second overtime, The Tabor game again exem- plihed the good soccer this team played, but an un- fortunate Tabor goal in the third period topped us. In our last two league games, we tied St. Markls and Belmont Hill by identical scores of 0-0. Throughout the season, the forward line of Joe Robertson, Don Balser, Robbie Sherman, Bill Russell, and Brock Callen, backed by Bill Poole ancl Art Cam- eron. controlled the ball but had some difhculty in scoring. Lou Higgins. John Mercer, Dave Hartz, and Jay Cooke composed the halfback line which consis- tently kept punching the ball up to the forwards. The tanclem of John Heald and Tom Gregg, along with Rocke Robertson. formed a strong defensive unit in front of goalie Bruce Fraser. The team of 1963 experienced many disappoint- ments, but credit is due to them for maintaining their pride and desire. Mr. Navins' superlative coaching was beneficial to every member. This team formed a unit on and off the field, and the year was marked by much improvement. Ulith five returning lettermen, Co-Captains-elect Brock Callen and Dave Fuess should see a line season next year. 'Ur' Q Mc- f' .- Q- ,ifi y - 7 , is Bb . '3 'Q 71 -,.,.1. . That was the story of one of the hnest back- fields in recent vears andthe storv of this years football team, A lack of depth and experience could not he overcome bv this aegressive squad. but certain individuals made outstanding con- tributions. The Big Red was a green team when it took the held against St. Sebastians but two pre-game rallies and a Fired-up squad brought Governor Dummer a hard-earned tie. Defensive end Tim Browne recovered a blocked punt in the fourth quarter. and substitute fullback Bob Wilkins cli- maxed a great efliort bv scoring on the next plav. Rlr. Anderson described the game as the hnest first game I have ever seen a Governor Dummer football team plavl Defeated a week earlier bv a superior Browne and Nichols club. the Governors travelled to Provi- dence to meet a good Moses Browne team. Re- covering from a first period safetv. the Big Red roared back. and lim Maier scored twice to secure the win. Co-Captain Bob Wise gained more vard- age than the opposition. and Charlie Parker and John Everett play a sterling game at defense, In the fcturth quarter. tragedv struck as Co-Captain and quarterback Tom Kfaier. who had plaved ter- rific ball thus far. broke his arm and was lost for the season. 4 05 L 1 u. The lack of a breakaway runner, due to the loss of Terry Gold- en because of a broken neck, hurt the team, but Wlise, Nlagrane, Dick Tuxbury. and new quarterback Tim Maier gave commendable performances. Next week a bigger and better Groton team overpowered us and overshadowed a two touchdown effort by eventual All-New England fullback Bob Wise. However, the complexion of the team seemed to change against St. Mark's. Leading 8-6 at halftime, the Big Red seemed to have victory within its grasp, but they let it slip by, coming out on the short of an 18-8 score. Wlith the final game at Belmont Hill, the team staged a great second half rally, only to fall short as time ran out when we were driving for another score. Wise cli- maxed a great season by running sixty yards for six points the last time he carried the ball. Both he and Tom Maier provided good leadership for the team. The season was a long, tough one for all on the team. The coaches devoted a great deal of time to their boys, and the team responded as best they could. YVe did not have the 'fhorsesfl and this is the only reason we didn't win more. If there is any doubt of the effect of the season on the players, ask any of them and they will tell you it meant an awful lot. In these two meets, the depth was made evident, and the prospects for years ahead looked strong. On February 1, the mile relay team of Captain Terry Golden, Bucky Foss, Mike Kotarski, and Pete Dolce competed in the Prep School Relay Championship at the B.A.A. Games. The quartet ran well, placing second to Chesire in a close race. In the Nloses Brown meet, the team, led by Terry Gol- den and Bucky Foss. won a decisive victory under poor conditions. Jay Allen, Bob lVilkins, and John Heald, gave us a sweep in the shot, and improved high jumpers Grove Cooke and Nfinsh Strater scored valuable points to secure the win. In the final dual meet of the season, we defeated Tabor to remain undefeated. A season such as this one can almost speak for itself. The success was attained by good coaching, good perform- ances by several individuals, and a tremendous come- back by Terry Golden, whose fine example set the trend for the entire team, Mr. Sperry summed up the results of the meets by saying, 'C . . . there is a greater depth of tal- ent than we have ever had before. The team deserves a lot of credit, and by their record they have strengthened the fine reputation of winter track teams at Governor Dummer. Then. a Qreat loss was incurred when it was learned that Captain Tom Rlaier. who ayeraqed 18 points a game last year. was sidelined for the season with his broken arm. Although some of the leadership was missinQ. we pulled ourselves together with exceptional agqressiyeness and good scoring balance to haye a relatiyely successful sea- son. He averaged about I5 points a game and dazzled many teams with his twisting underhand lay-up. Pete Imber consistently scored from the outside, and was deadly from the line, proven by his 27 point output against Moses Brown. John Macken- zie and Scott Emerson supplied ample height un- der the boards, and both hit for clutch baskets. Ball-hawking Tim Maier Hlled a guard position quite eflectively throughout the season. Capable at any time to fill guard positions were Bill Harvey and tricky dribbling Bill Poole, while Ted Cald- well and Andy Leonard gave added height up front. Once again Mr. lVilliams took inexperienced boys and helped them recognize and develop their talents. He has developed a responsible, aggressive unit who responded well in all situations. Injured Tom Maier did his best to inspire the team from the sidelines, but it was the players themselves who provided their leadership on the court and played good ball for Govemer Dunnner. The forward lines forecheckecl quite well in the Berwick game, while the whole team was responsible for the satisfying 2-1 victory over the Grotties. This year's team marked a great improvement in Governor Dummer hockey. The team faced many strong teams, but we fared well because we were a unit. Nfr. Both boys did very well against good competition. In the Interscholastics the teain placed third aniong eight schools. Bill Russell gained the chaiupionship at 121, while Jottv Pearsall was second at 138. Captain Steele, Oliker. and Dorsey took thirds, as Hope and Higgins placed fourth, all in their respective weight classes. The teaui performed well this year, as have all Governor Dunnner teams in the past. Mr. Evans again produced a squad which brought respect and prestige to the school, but the boys themselves were re- sponsible for continuing the trend of our excellent wrestling tearns.
