This is PSIJt'Clfllly true in the fuse of ai school xvliere the interest and devotion of its students are of utmost importance in its growth and development. The rise of Governor lluuuuer over the past two Centuries can be directly at- tributed to the interest and devotion of all its students. The students of Govemor Ilunuuer can he proud of the great part they have played in the growth of their school. lt is for this reason that we dedieate The 1963 ,Uilesforze to the students, both past and present, of Governor Duuuuer .'xCZ1ClC!Ily. 4 .Q I 525.3 Exim mm. lu- was at gill limi-N willing to listcn to mlm upinium of Otlii-rs. .Xnyo ., - 1' 1 ,,w I . if 'N .1 J, -' I .I vp F' Q I D14 ' P . -. A -1 I , , GLEE LUB FINESTI YE S The bicentennial Governor Dummer .Xcademy Glee Club proved right from the start that it would be one of the best in years. For a school of this size, the Glee Club was fortunate to have such a large number of boys willing to give of themselves. Unlike many other clubs. this glee club had a certain en- thusiasm which was shown both in rehearsals and at concerts. Since this group was able to learn new songs quickly, it was able to have new numbers at each concert - something not done before at Gover- nor Dummer. Due to these qualities. the excellence of the Glee Club was evident everywhere it went. Along with the regular concerts with Hlalnut Hill School, Dana Hall School, and Abbot Academv. the Glee Club again had a concert with the lVavneHeet School and made another appearance at the New England Prep School Concert at Symphony Hall in Boston. This vear the Nfeistersingers under the direction of Steve lYitt soared to new heights. introducing a dif- ferent varietv of music into Governor Dummer life. Their songs ranged from a 13th century round. I,2,3 Sing to a modern barbershop quartet number. Why Study. For the first time this group was made up of, not just seniors. but members from each class who sang well. Included in this group were: Brewer Eddy, Ted Cook, Robbie Sherman. Tim Hlhittemore, Steve NN'itt, Stew Steffev. Steve Hughes. and Al Prescott. Truly, Mr. Sager was right when he said, 'lThis is good! 'I gill! An unavoidable letdown may have cost us our first defeat. Although we completely outplayed the Saints, we dropped a 1-1-6 decision. The loss to St. Sebastian's gave us an added incentive in our next game as we bumped Browne 8: Nichols 20-6 in the Byfield mud. Charlie Parkers blocked punt and Bob Cates bruising line play were the key features of the game. Defense was the keynote of the Moses Brown game. Trailing at half time we fought back hard and sent the Rhode Islanders home with a 20-1-1 defeat. Next came Milton. They were supposed to be one of the league's powerhouses, but we showed them what a good football team really is. Playing our best football of the year in the second half. we humbled the Kfilties 28-12 in front of a very disappointed Alumni Day crowd. The Groton game was the one for which we had been waiting. This was the must game. the one we had to win. It had been eight long years since we had last beaten Groton, and it took little effort on the part of the captains and coaches to get the team fired up. Although they gave us a rugged battle, we were in control all the way and pulled out a most satisfying 16-8 victory. Although the statistics put us ahead of St. Marks on paper, we lost to them 22-6. We outgained and outpassed them, but several costly fumbles and a fired- up opponent cost us a game that should have been ours. .u St. Sehastians Browne and Nichols Moses Brown Milton Groton St. Klarlfs Belmont Hill f9l7.X 6 20 '20 28 16 6 H OPP. Jeff was the holler whose hustle and desire inspired us to play better ball. Bobby was a steady. hard-worker who con- sistently hit the clutch baskets and kept us in game after game with his rebounding. Tom Nlaier led the team in scoring with an average of 18.6 points a game. He was a tireless perfomier on both de- dense and offense and should provide excellent leadership next year. Billy Poole was a cause of constant harassment to an opponent with his quick-handed defense. Don Connelly hit for double figures on several occasions. featuring a 14 point performance at Nobles. Cal Mackenzie was capable of stepping into a game at any time and playing inspired ball. Rusty Navins and Bill Harvey were able to come off the bench and give Jeff or Billy a rest whenever necessary. As in the past. it was Mr. Williams who was primarily responsible for the success of this team. This year. however. the success of the team did not take the form of a winning record: instead it took the form of a lesson of life which stressed the importance of true mi nm! fozzuglzm vt in order for an individual to realize his potential. The fact that each individual on this team learned that lesson indicates that the season was a very definite success. for this is the purpose of athletics. '1 N Ac . Q , V5 , . . Q -RX I ,. After losing our first five games. including a 5-4 heart breaker to Browne and Nichols. we squared off against Lawrence at Groton. The greatly improved defense of Teddy Cook, Charlie Parker. and Tom Gregg was impenetrable behind the first line who pushed home seven goals. with lNfIark Petri and Robbie Sherman both registering hat tricks, Playing our best hockey of the season against perennially strong St. Se- bastian's the following Saturday, we jumped off to a two goal lead. The Saints tied it up late in the third period and had to take us into overtime to beat us. YVC overcame the third period troubles which had plagued us against Danvers and lX1ilton when we tied Berwick 2-2 on the U.N.H. ice. The scoring punch of the first line of Captain Farmer. Ma1'k Petri. and Rob- bie Shemian was clearly demonstrated in the Kloses Brown game when this trio scored four times in less than five minutes, The fact that we never gave up on ourselves was clearly evident in the last game with the lNI.I.T. frosh. Our morale was high and we skated by them 9-3. Forbes scored a hat trick and Robbie had tive goals as we put on our best offensive display of the season. In his debut as varsity coach, hir. Ashley Eames did a superlative job as a dedicated mentor. He understood every player, and he brought the team a long way. He was, in ef- fect, a player coach in that he could demon- strate as well as explain. It was his ability to maintain the determination and desire of this team even in the face of defeat which made this season a particularly memorable one. ll all FRUXT ROIV: Kaplan: XIacint1'3'v: Barr: Lanflcn- Jos.: l'JolCC: B111 SIJCTIY, Coaflz. To say that it was by far the best ever does not do justice to the ability of this team. It possessed all the ingredients of a truly magnificent track team H- balance. depth. leadership. desire, and coaching. The balance of this team is clearly evinced by the fact that four different people broke seven separate records a total of 17 times. Outstanding among these was Captain Terry Golden who set new school records in the -15 yard high hurdles and 50 yard dash. and tied the school record in the 40 yard dash. He also set a new meet record in the 300 yard dash at the Univer- sity of lNIassachusetts Invitational lNIeet with a time of 33.6 seconds. He was in every way a leader by example and inspiration. Co-M.P,V. Ranny Langenbach broke his own mile record four times, finally setting it at 4231.4 in the Bow- doin meet. Ranny also broke the record for the 1000 yard run with a time of 2125.6 in the Andover meet. This record was later broken twice by Bucky Foss who ran 2223.6 in the Bowdoin meet. Jeff Eveleth. running the 600 for the fourth year in a row. Finally broke the school record with a time of l:17.6 in the Interscholas- tics at Exeter. Highlighting the season were convincing victories over the Andover J.V.'s, the Exeter Kfoses Brown, Colby and Hebron in the Bowdoin Quadrangle meet, and Tabor. The fact that seven members of the team were willing to give up their winter week end to compete in the University of Xlzissaclnisetts Prep School Invitational IX'Ieet was typical of the dedication which examplified the team's spirit. ..-gl 'oo ,xh Xl ,. 5 , x, Q.. 1 N I I Exeter-Taber Andover Exeter Moses Brown Lf Mass. Connell pitched all but one game and ended up with the school strike-out record. He was a clutch pitcher in everv sense of the word. Witness the Belmont Hill game in which he struck out the last two batters in the ninth after the bases were loaded. There is one game which must not go without mention. This was the 15-inning St, Klarlcs classic. For 14 scoreless innings Connell matched St. Klarliis ironman. Pete Shimkus pitch for pitch, lYe had ll hits but were unable to put anv of them toqether in one inning. In the 15th St. Klarks won the game on two consecutive hits. lf the success of this team is anv indicator ol' Mr. Eames abilitv as a coach. Qreat things lie ahead for Governor Dummer baseball. Although the club defeated all of its class B opponents. it was unable to defeat any of its class A opponents. The season opened with an easy victory over a weak NI.I.T. Freshman team by the score of ll-l. Other early season highlights were victories over the UNH Freshman. St. Marks and Tufts. During these early weeks. the club ran into strong teams from Andover. Exeter. and Harvard. The remainder of the season saw the team win three of its last five games. In the final game of the year, playing their best lacrosse of the season, they de- feated an outstanding alumni squad 7-6. Throughout the year. Jeff Ellis, the captain and only returning starter. led the team both in spirit and in play. It must be noted that with this fine season Jeff became the all-time high scorer in the history of the school. RI.I.T. Fresh. Andover U.N.H. XX'hereas last years team bunched its strenfth in cer- tain eyents, this one had complete balance. The first meet loomed a tough one since MTT. was far ahead of us in number of practices. and we were competing without John Healcl and Bucky Foss. As Kfr. Sperry had expected. the meet was close. but a truly clutch performance by Terry Gol- den in winning Fiye eyents Qaye us our first yictory. Exeter. a strong. yeteran outfit. was the only team to outscore us at their own relays. They were. in fact, probably the only team in northern New Enecland. high school or prep school. capable of beating us in a dual meet. Mr. Sperry had said that the Moses Brown meet would be decided by between two and seyen points. He wasn't the least bit unhappy when we proyed him wrong by winning Tglfg - 4325 As usual the Deering meet was our toughest one. They had easily swf-pt to the Kfaine championship and they were fayorecl. .X l-2 finish by Ranny and Bucky in the 830 and another 5-win performance by Terry won the meet for us 64 - 58. 122 I . , M.I.T. Ranny set school records in the 880 in 1:5918 and the mile in 1:24:6. the lat- ter being a meet record. Terry easily won the highs and lows, but the key to our performance was Jeff Eveletlrs come-from-behind victory in the -1-10. St. Paul's provided little challenge on the Bicen- tennial weekend, and we walked over them 91 - 31. Mr. Sperry tried to tell us that the Hebron meet was going to be a close one since they had won the Niaine prep school crown the previous week. 1Ye for- got to listen to him. however. and trounced them on their own track 79 f 43. Accorcling to the trust established by the late Reverend Glenn Tilley Kforse. long-time friend and trustee of the Academy, a new flue' is provided each year in order that the old flag which has flown during the past year may be eixen to 11 iuenuher of the graduating class. This year the Kforse Flag is awarded to Stephen Gratiaa Hughes of Santa Fe, New lN1exicO. .-lrarfrnzy Prige Each year two young men are singled out for their outstanding accourplishurents during' the senior year. Une receives the Morse Flagg the other receives the ,Xi'Lllll'llly Prize. It is often true that qualities of unselhshness and sportsmanslrip develop hest in people who have known adversity. people who have traveled a rough road. From such experience can come the necessary maturity, olljeetixity, and awareness of the needs of others. The young man we honor now has had to struggle for success in academics and in athletics. He has ruaintainecl his own poise and courage, and by his word and exfuuple has inspired others in all areas of school life, hut most clearly in his role as captain of a losing hut courageous hockey team. Ji Cumings Prize Two years ago, with great regret, I wrote to the parents of a sophomore indicating my belief that their son, in all probability, could not successfully complete our course of study. Though I regarded him as a thoroughly fine young man, I thought it wise to adyise them to withdraw him from school. Neither the boy nor his parents agreed. That young man returned to do well in his junior year and, this year, to achieye a sound academic record while serv- ing with distinction as a senior class ofihcer. sports edi- tor of the i'Goyernor. a dormitory proctor. and a three-sport yarsity athlete. It qiyes me particular pleasure to award the Cumings Prize to: Chadbourn I-Ioward Smith of Bar Harbor, Blaine. Grzfvzey Prize In the classroom, on the athletic held, as a dormi- tory proctor, in all areas of school life, this year's winner has performed to the best of his ability, but he has invariably acted with modesty and has placed the good of the group ahead of his own personal gain. In his quiet way he has been an outstanding' coun- selor to many. IYilliam .Xllen Sloane of .Xmesburyx ,' 'rj '- r dime f Mm 1 . 'Q-an -4'-YU Q Fit' fit lai - N +..'! ,- ,sf 'N' X .ff . . You'd really be surprised! What's more, your electric service is a better bargain today than it used to be - even if your electric bills are bigger.
