Each year the junior class finds itself faced with several new responsibilities. Among these are: increased freedom. more important roles on the athletic field. and additional scholastic pressures, College admissions take a place ul' prominence in the mind nf every member of the class. This years junior class met these responsibilities vvith maturity. and judiciousness. Scholastically. this class dis- covered the importance of concentrated study and hard work. Consistently among the foremost mere Jon Shaf- master. Dave Hilgendorff. Bob Ingalls. Dave Caldwell. and Steve YVitt, YN'ith increased significance placed on College Boards. the class of '63 made a det:-rrnim-cl 1-flort to perform to the best of its ability. On the athletic field. the juniors made impressive contributions to every sport. Bob Cate. Dave Hilgendorff. Jeff Ellis. and Boll Segel will form the nucleus of next year's varsity football team. Other juniors vvho were of great value lo their teams include NIooseM Stone. Ranny Lanzenbach, Bob Taylor, and Chad Smith. A great part of this yearis atb! letic success was due to those members of the class of '63 who, although they did not vvin their letters. vvorked hard to help bring victory to the Big Red. This year's junior class has an added responsibility. Since next year is the bicentennial. this class xvill be viewed as representative of Governor Dummer. They must be prepared to step into the top echelon of the new student government. As leaders of the school they uill step into a position which demands efficiency and ma- turity. - ,- ..- ,,. , , es X 4 '74, , .V ' s. if 4, .. aj' 1247 'kif Q. ff 1 it .Qs W 31 H get 5 ,fl xiii fa we 2511. l V Y 1, W 'Rf 5 'P 4 1 Dr J , :- x .1 4 Q ' B X is l 4. 1 ' i ,, , i W 1 I I 1 5 HN 1 JUL a 'Y ' Wltfw won? He is being introduced, however, to the assumption of responsibility for the first time, An integral part of the student government the sophomore begins to learn self-control. This year's sophomore class was blessed both athletically and seholastically. The honor roll was frequently graced with names such as John OiDea. Paul Freedhurg. and Howie Foss, A major responsibility of the sophomore is to learn the meaning of hard work. The athletic exploits of the class of '64 are well known by all. The sophomore backheldu of Terry Golden, Tom Maier, Bob Wise, and Mike Kotarski gives promise of great things to come. The Varsity teams in the winter were fortunate to have Bill Poole, Roy Clark, and Robbie Sherman available. lfention must also be made of those sophomores who have not yet achieved varsity status but have performed well on a sub-varsity team. The class of '64 proved itself capable of assuming the responsibility which is quickly becoming an important part of their life at Governor Dummer. ll H llllllll ui! nfl 1 em, i' 'EXC 1 ,Elm Lo ..4'f Sophomores stuff themselves at class cookout. . ! On Novem- ber ll, the Big Red traveled to Providence, Rhode Island, to play a scrappy Moses Brown team. Determined to live up to their potential, the Governors played an excellent game. Sophomore back Tom Nlaier. ably assisted by center Tim McNally and tackle Ben jameson, led the team scoring with three touchdowns. Quarterback john Shafmaster and left-end Bob Segel, both juniors, collaborated for the final touchdown, as the Governors took home a 28-O victory. Having regained their confidence. the team eagerly awaited their next foe, Milton, on Parent's Day. The Red men did not disappoint the partisan crowd. Sparked by an exceptionally strong defense led by Studds and Fla- herty, and an effective offense with Jeff Ellis at the helm. the visitors were shut out 14-O. The next week the Red Eleven was entertained by Groton on their Parent's Day. After three scoreless quarters, the Big Red made a successful bid for the first score of the game, but Groton was on top 14-12 when the final gun sounded. The team had not shaken off its last 'defeat as it bowed to St. Mark's 20-O. The Governors final game with Belmont Hill proved to be a hard fought contest. Fine performances by Bob Cate and Dave Hilgendorff on offense and Denis Golden and Burke Leahey on defense enabled the Big Red to tie a highly rated opponent. The Governors compiled a 9-1 record, playing a schedule which was composed of seven larger schools. The attackmen were Stan Healy, Jeff Ellis, Chris Ferris, and trcaseman Frank Bond. Jeff Ellis ran his total point score for the season to an amazing Hfty-three, with fif- teen goals and thirty-eight assists. Stan Healy, the crease mainstay a year ago. rotated between the crease and feeder positions. Frank Bondis effective quick-stick brought the team many important goals. The first mid- Held consisting of Dave Lorenson, Burke Leahey, and Bob Snyder played tirelessly. Although their positions are not glorious. they were indispensible to the success of the team. They were ably backed up by Bob Jones, Andi Whittemore, and Dave Higendorfli. The third midfield, Forbes Farmer in particular. came through in the clutch many times. Captain Tom Tobey, one of the finest goalies in New England, ran the veteran defense, con- sisting of creaseman Pete Flaherty, Colin Stidds, and Steve Blair. A standout substitute was Bob Cate. Colin and Steve did a fine job in controlling the opposing feeders, while Pete protected the crease. This year was Captain Tobey's third as varsity goalie, and he was the backbone of the team. In addition to his miraculous saves. Tom's speed and agility were a great aid to the defense. The 1962 Lacrosse team had great potential, and they lived up to exactly what was expected of them. Against our earlier opponents, they won fairly easilyg and the scores ran 16-1 over the l'VI.l.T. Freshmen and 17-0 over the Tufts Freshmen. The Governors, however, were faced with more formidable opponents in Phillips Andover and the New Hampshire Freshmen. Their 3-2 victory over a bigger and faster Andover team was the first since 1956 and was by far the outstanding game of the season. Both teams were playing their hardest. with Captain Tobey making many astounding saves in the closing minutes. Veteran attackman. Chris Ferris. fired the winning goal into the net in the last two minutes of the game. Tabor Academy. a perennial strong rival. posed a threat to the team again this year. Down at the half. the Governors. paced by midfielder Bob James, came back, determined. to beat them 7-6. James scored five goals and played an excellent game. Again. Jef? Ellis's feeding. and Frank Bond's quick-stick combined for two goals. the last the winning goal. with forty seconds to go in the game. The defense pill forth a sterling performance, not allowing the opposing attack to gain control of the ball for the remainder of the game, This year's record of nine wins and one loss. that being to Class A Champions. Exeter. was a fine record. and one of which to be proud, The expert coaching of both Mr, Evans and Mr. Anderson was certainly appreciated. and it contributed a great deal to the success of the team. The returning lettermen. led by Captain-elect Jef? Ellis are looking forward to next Spring, and hopefully. to another winning season under coaches Evans and Anderson. Perhaps the lack of an ex- perienced coach was the major problem facing Co- Captains Ken Pouch and jebs Selden and the rest of the team. Although the outl i 1'w k was not too bright. under the capable part-time tutelage of Mr. Josiah lVelch. a team was fielded for the opening match against fNI.l.T. Be- sides the Co-Captains. Warren Steele. Paul Johnson. Peter Machinist and newcomers Dick Stockton and Steve YYitt added depth to this year's team. As Co-Captain Pouch put it. The tennis team can't be optimistic about a good season. but if we work hard as we did at the latter part of the '61 season, the team . will prove itself better than expectedfl ln the Andover match. YN'arren Steele and Vfarren Vaughan played excellently. winning 8-l. 6-0 and 6--l. T-5 respectively. Vaughan and Johnson squeaked by in the doubles llil-6 and 6--l. On May ll. the Governors travelled In St. lNIark's ,, 1xl1C1'Q they were a decided underdog. yet only succumbed Ti by a score of lf'-8. Outstanding performers in this ' match were Jebs Selden. Ken Pouch and Warren Vaughan. all of whom won their singles matches. The highlight of the season was a l-l--l victory over Brooks. Por the first time in the season. everyone played 1.-.ell in both singles and doubles. gaining four wins and tum splits in the singles. ln previous years. the tennis team had lacked depth. This year the team was composed of five veterans kxho played capably in earh match. yet they were unable to combine good performances and as a result. they lost some close matches. I. Zlforic' Flag The Morse Flag was first awarded at the 150th Commence- ment of this school on June 9. 1913, and it has been awarded each year since that time to the senior whose record in all respects has met with the highest approval of the faculty. According to the trust established by the late Reverend Glenn Tilley Morse. long-time friend and trustee of the Academy, a new flag is provided each year in order that the old flag which has flown during the past year may be given to a member of the graduating class. This year the Morse Flag is awarded to Arztlzorzy Dzmtter Iflzittemore of Cohasset, Each year the faculty is faced with an almost impossible task in singling out one senior who most nearly represents that com- bination of qualities cherished by the Academy. These qualities include a concern for others. a lively sense of responsibility. personal commitment ltr work and play, and a keen interest in academic pursuits. Andi lVhittemore has been a good student and athlete. He has always lived by a strong personal code of loyalty and integrity. But of the greatest importance has been his total commitment to his duties as head of our student government. ln this posi- tion he has been unstinting of his time and energy. always ready to tackle any problem. concerned about his fellow stu- dents and about the school. Through his leadership he has helped to give our new form of student government its vitality and its initial success. Starting with modest athletic ability. both have developed such prowess that they have made yaluable contributions to four different varsity teams. Both have gone out of their way to accept more than their share of responsibility on their corridors. in activities. in the classroom. and on the field. I take great pleasure in presenting special prizes to john Sarlqei Dazsagian. II of Belmont and Stanton Thomas Healy of IN'orcester. The fourth Special Prize goes to a young man who has proven the old adage about good things in small packages. Probably the lightest football line' backer anywhere. he was also one of the best. This year's senior class boasts just such a young man: Edward Stanley Kleten of Haverhill. The sixth Special Prize is awarded to another senior who has earned the admiration of all by making maximum use of his abilities. Small in stature. he has nonetheless been a bulwark on the soccer. basketball. and lacrosse teams. When the wording of this prize was drawn up I suspect the authors really had this year's winner in mind. It would be hard to imagine a young man who was more unselfish, more concerned about helping other people, more devoted to his community, more enthusiastic in all his activities. Also a fine leader in athletics and a true sportsman, he is the epitome of the Academy Prize winner. lt is my great pleas- ure to present the Academy Prize to Denis Edward Golden of Winchester, Illoody Kent Prizes The Moody Kent Prizes are given annually to those stu- dents throughont the school who have achieved outstanding records in various academic departments. All seniors have en- joyed the benefits of Mr. Sager's classes, and many have addressed various groups in our area. ln an age when com- I . The first prize of S25 is awarded to Stephen Roger Barkin of Manchester, New Hampshire, The second prize of S15 is awarded to john Weatherbee Trrrbell, jr. of Bridgewater, The third prize of SIU is awarded to Thomas Burke Leahey of Lowell. Thorndike Hilton Cup The Thorndike Hilton Cup was established by the Class of 1919 in memory of their classmate, Thorndike Hilton. It is awarded each year to the ranking scholar in the senior class. YVith the cup also goes a medal provided by the late Miss Margaret Cushing of Newburyport, long a close friend and neighbor of the Academy. At the outset I mentioned the academic strength of this year's class. ln such competi- tion, to become the top ranking scholar one must combine ability, genuine intellectual interest, and determination, The winner this year possesses all those qualities, but he also has a broad range of interests which have made him a strong contributor to the school in non-academic areas as well. lt gives me great pleasure to present the Thorndike Hilton Cup to Peter Bruce lllachiriitt of Manchester, New Hamp- shire.
