The previous year the team had been unable to win any points and many of the boys who had run in that meet were returning to try again for the Class B title. The team had lost its coach Mr. Sutton to Holiday Magazine the week before and was now led by an eager Mr. Trommald who was assisted by Mr. Sager and Mr. Sperry. Excellent guidance was given the team by Mr. Trommald in spite of his lack of experience as a track coach. In the first event which was the shot put Pete Boynton got off a 4-7 6 toss - good enough for third place behind two Andover boys This gave the team three points and a first ln Class B Pete did well throughout the season consistently winning 1n his event The next event was the 1000 with Ed Kaiser the Captain-elect for 1961 repre- senting the Governors. ln a race marked by unusually strong competition Ed was unable to place but he did succeed in running five seconds faster than his best previous time this year. In the mile junior Tom Wilson l- though not placing ran below live min- utes' for the first time. Tom improved steadily as the season progressed by hard work and determination. The hardluck guy on this team was Co-captain Bill Turner who spent a large part of the winter term in the infirmary. Despite this Bill who ran the 600 placed in all but the Prep School Meet. V7- R 9 SL 'LZ' I 3,1113 my Qgx The Senior Glee Club By RANDY PLASS Every Friday night mellifluous sounds can be heard coming from Lang Gym, the Senior Glee Club is hard at work. The long hours of practice are rewarded by four joint concerts a year with nearby girls, schools. After individual tryouts this fall, the club began working diligently in prepara- tion for its first concert with Dana Hall. At this Hencounteri' in January, the Clee Club displayed a repertoire of four songs: No Man ls An Island, glfiscrere, a medley of songs from Oklahoma, and Cod Of Our Fathers. ln addition to these numbers, the joint glee clubs sang the famous Ode To great enthusiasm. Due to an unpredicted snowstorm, the concert with Beaver Coun- try Day School was cancelled. Next on the schedule was the Abbot Academy Concert which was successfully held in Alumni Gym. At this time A Cup Of Stingo was added to its program. Also, the joint clubs substituted the Christmas Cantata for the Ode to Virginia Voyage. Un Easter Sunday both the Senior Clee Club and the Mcistersingcrs performed at the Vespers service. The Clee Club made its traditional final appearance at the Commencement exer- cises. Due to his energy and patience, much of the success of this yearis club must be attributed to Mr. Sager. Without his effort, the Senior Glee Club gould never have developed into the hnished Virginia Voyage. The boys strove for perfection at prac- tice, and by their next concert with Wlalnut Hill, they were a new club. Needless to say, the long-awaited dances following each of these concerts were received with pmduq-L that it was by the end of the year, Back Row: Bull, Hunt, Rimer, Finnerty, Wadlow, Rignall, Vaughan, C., Stearns, Monkhouse. ' Ig, 'wk fe- The Junior Glee Club By T031 TOBEY The 1960 Junior Clee Club followed Governor Uummer tradition this year hy having another successful singing group. The group got oll to a slow start in its practicesg hut hy the time the lirst con- cert rolled around the former monotones had become strong hasses and tenors. The boys were very thankful for the persistent urgings of their two directors whose en- couragements linally began to pay divi- dends. The first concert was held in home terri- tory with Beaver Country Day School as the guests of the lied Team. The songs sung hy the hoys at this concert and the succeeding ones were: De .'llll'IIltllS nl- CJOIIITIIQ. Ifrollzer !lIlIIf'.Y-S .-lir, Crea! Day, and l.t'l lfx Nou' l'flll.M' l 11nzt1u.w llerz, plus sundry other songs in joint numhers with the girls' glee clubs. The hoys performed comnientlahly at the remaining concerts held with Walnut Hill School, Shore Coun- try llay School. and llana llall School. The success of the ,lunior filet- Club can he attrihuted to two factors: direction and enthusiasm. The first is the patience, guidance. and time that was contributed hy this year's directors. Nlr. Sutton and Mr. Stone. Also. this success came as the result of the enthusiasm shown hy Z1 ma- jority of this year's members. who not only enjoyed the social aspects of the con- certs. hut at the same time discovered the rewards of singing togetherg all are looking forward to future years in the 5cnior filet' Club.
