Maw. but through working together for ourselves, The Glee Club BY Bos KANCAVICUS The musical sound of the 1957 Clee Club will long linger in the ears of the Governors. Although somewhat smaller than in past years, the Glee Club carried on the tradition of giving excellent con- certs. Under the able direction of Mr. Sager, a high-spirited year was enjoyed by all. There were four joint concerts held during the year with Walnut Hill School, Winsor School. Dana Hall School, and Beaver Country Day School. The numbers which were most often sung in the concerts were the Drinking Song, Old Hundredth, U Bone Jesu, Give .lle Your Tired, Your Poor, and the humorous Musical Trust. After each concert the evening was round- ed out with dancing and refreshments. Among the specialties which the Glee Club presented this year was the tenor voicc of Joe Montgomery singing Colden Days as a solo. Mr. Kerrs Mcistersingers Fifth Row: C. Marks, J. Main, P. The Governors had not dropped a contest in eight starts having lost their last game lo Groton in the opener of the 1955 season. Croton was undefeated in ten ames. The home club plaved a terrific game right up to the last second, but Groton was too much. Their single wing attack led by Hugh Scott was a power- house. Jim Sylvester managed to score the Governors' only touchdown in the fourth quarter, but the high point of the game was the defense of G.D.A., led by Mike Tyler, which did a great job under ex- treme pressure. St. Mark's brought an unblemished rec- ord into the next game, which proved to be a defensive battle. Both clubs were up for the game, which the Governors dropped by one point 7-6. St. Markls scored early in the first half and was in possession of the ball most of the time. As in the Milton game though, the team came back after the half with big ideas. The play improved in the second half, with the Governors scoring on a sleeper Eddy Johnsen took the ball from punt formation faded back and threw from about the St Mark s forty to hit Jim Sylvester 1n the end zone It was a beautifully executed play and came as a surprise to everyone The Belmont Hill game was just one of those days Nothing wanted to work for the home team and the Hillies could not mlss Interceptions and fumbles plagued the Governors throughout the game It was a rough way to end he season but the boss had nothing to cry about They gave their best and played as a well blended unit for six games No coach could ask for more Congratulations to Mike Tyler who was selected for the Boston Herald All Prep team The thanks of the team go to Don Kaufman a great leader and to our coaches Mr Sa er M1 Evans .md Mr .L -,..., 55 'Y :EEE5 Sperry And best wishes for the 1957 season to Russ Tornrose captam elect of next vear s squad 'Y MHZ? if 'Q v-4-'sql' sigh? Despite diligent play- ing on both sides no more points were scored during the game. This victory great- ly helped the morale of the team after the loss to Browne and Nichols on the previous Wednesday. After losing a tough game to a very scrappy Belmont High School team, the Red Men traveled to Milton with two other Governors' teams to meet their arch rivals. Once again Dave Andersen came through with his famous penalty kick to score the first point of the game. The point came after many troublesome moments with the ball in Governors' territory, and was a very welcome boon to the outlook of the team. Billy George once again showed the superb ability that won him the honor of being chosen the best goalie in the league as he prevented Milton from scor- ing a single goal. After the game, the team was happy to discover that the Football and ,l.V. Soccer teams had also been suc- cessful in defeating their able opponents. On October 24th the soccer team met the best opposing team of their year when they traveled up to St. Paul's. The Red Men were forced to yield by a score of 3-lg however, valuable experience was gained which greatly helped the team in the future. When the strong Tabor team came to G.D.A. on Parents' Day, the Governors played, the coaches maintain, one of the best games that Governor Dummer has ever played. Every man on both teams played as hard as he possibly could. De- spite the fact that the game ended in a 0-0 tie, everyone was satisfied that it had been an excellent game on both sides With hopes of winning the league cham pronship the Red Men traveled to South boro to play St Marks The team knew that if they could w1n their last two league games they would be the undlsputed champions of the league however despite their diligent efforts they found themselves unable to hold down the strong St Mark s team A doleful group of Governors came home that evening with a 2 0 defeat Everyone seemed to be a little disheart ened as the team met the scrappy Medford High eleven in a home game The Red Men were caught with their guard down in the first half and as a result the Med ford offense managed to shoot a quick shot lnto the Governors cage for the only score ln the first half Dunn the halftime Mr Navlns gave the team a talking to that abruptly jerked them out of their lethargy As a result the boys came back in the second half to play better ball than they knew how Thus they managed to tie up the score before the end of the game The season was concluded with a game with Belmont Hill School Determined to win their last game the squad scored twice in the early minutes of the game The final gun found the Red Men ahead 2 1 and the team had won the last game of the season 'i '-sv-rn Stagg 'iq' lllll Ill G D A s Greatest Day By P OBER Oh Poobah sublime magistrate of that game of gods volleyball I invoke thee as the muse of that great sport t 1nsp1re me w1th words and thoughts to tell of G D A S GREATEST DAY Hardly a man remams ahve who Wlll ever forget that famous season of 1956 a season when the all tlme greats of the xolleyball world met 1n a deadly three week battle Never before had such a collectlon of heroes been seen heroes like Waco Weenie Weene George and my roommate In the Cowboy league the contest narrowed down to a battle between three tltans one of whom was the team of the man who has won more volleyball games than any human ahve Qalthough lt IS rumored that the great Poobah himself once got the better of hlmj h1s Lordship the lndefatxgable Wllllam H Sperry As was dolefully pre dicted by the rest of his league H M Sperry succeeded ln defeating h1s two op ponents ln the Indian league a new man and h1s team were leadmg with vlrtually no competltlon, Chief Smlth and hls Tontos. f DA S GREATEST DAY came on Saturday December 8th 1956 The stands were packed wlth av1d fans from all over the world As the whistle blew the al m1 hty Poobah dropped a volleyball from heaven onto the court and the Last Round up began The Buffalo Bills of Mr Sperry managed to win the first game but final uctory was still far from theirs After pulling up from behind in a miraculous dlsplay of sklll the Tontos went on to w1n the second game The stands were hushed as the third and final game began fby Poobatlc decree the championshlp goes to the team winning two out of three gamesj The mighty Sperryxtes were not up to thelr usual form Would the master fall? was the question on everyone s llps Slowly the score mched upwards most of lt for the Tontos When the final whistle blew the Tontos were ahead by a very definite margin The old master had been dethroned at last The mighty collossus of Sperry had crumbled and out of the broken debrls had risen a new glant and hrs team the indomitable Mr Smith and his Tontos' Thanks, Poob, for the inspiration. Wink also placed in several events, and the relay team came in third Now it was time for the Governors to win a meet This they did in a meet with Roxbury Latin Almost everyone placed 1n his event and Pesky breezed over the finish line after tying the record for the 40-yard dash. Before this meet the coach, Mr. Eglin, expressed his confidence that the team could win. The team was happy to oblige. The final meet of the season was the Bowdoin lnterscholastics where the Gov- ernors finished third. Peter Cadigan placed first in the thousand, holding the lead from the first turn to the finish line. Wink got second in the broad jump and in the hurdles. Another form of winter athletics. although it rc- ceives little publicity. is league basketball. The league teams competed vieiously for the title which was finally eopped by the Athenians. Such league players as Charlie Cushman, Tom Parker, Steve Corrcll and Ned Heebe added much drive to their teams. The Winter Term at school is tough, cold and gloomy. Perhaps one of the bright spots is the Post Office. Certainly no one could have asked for more efficiency in mail delivery than that provided by Dick Field and Tom Grose. Scheduled weekly a group of seniors meets in the Mansion house forming the Religious Discus- sion Croup. Linder the guidance of Mr. Williams. stimulating discussions are held about some of religionis provocative problems. Perhaps the highlight of the year came on March 10th when Mr. Bridges. the Yesper Service speaker, came to our meeting and answered many piercing questions. .lim Seder, due to illness, was unable to finish his senior year at school. Jim was greatly missed by everyone. The absence of his contributions to the religious discussion meetings left a gap that was never filled. We all wish ,lim the best of luck at liniversity of Michigan next year. Un Sunday. February 3rd, the school was eestatie to learn from the Headmaster that there was to be a free day , the next day. The 'cbreakn came just at the right time and the change was appreciated by everyone. The dayis festivities were started by Steve Correll who served coffee and toast in the Butt Club until 10:00 A. M. On February 9th. C.D.A. had a glee club concert with the Wialnut Hill School in the won- derful community of Natick. HAuld acquain- tances were renewed and a fine evening was had by all. The long trail of Governor Dummer life has come to an end for the seniors. Some have been traveling this path for four years, others for three years, and a few for but two years. For some the path of knowledge has proved difficult, for others it has been easy. We all started our long trek at the little red school house and now we have all hnished our journey at the milestone. Athletics, studies, social activities and the cutting C.D.A. humor are all in the past. Each boy will cherish his own memories of school life ef a football game, a date for a glee club dance, one night in Portland. Time must not distort the precious experiences that we have had here Few will refute the fact that a prmparatory school education is a privlleve a privilege that only one student IH a hundred enjovs in the United States. Some of us have taken advantage of this privilege, others have not. It is irrevocable now. however. We are as well prepared for college as pos- sible. We must not linger too long on Governor Dummer achievements and failures. They belong to the past, and we must advance. For those who have bitter memories, the future offers con- solation in that it is an untouched realm that can be molded into what we wish to make it. For those who have done well here, the future represents a taunting challenge to do as well again. But who is to judge whether or not one has done well - the Headmaster, the teachers, your classmates? Only you, yourself can answer that searching question.
