Our books have weathered every storm, of pencils deftly pressed. The summer's near, the frogs I hear, the lfansion House is blooming, While round about the Milestone now the Senior Class is booming. But, oh school, school, school, Oh the future coming yet. I guess I'm just a little fool, To doubt Iill soon forget. Oh Spoon, oh Doc, we've heard you drone so long, Our ears already are quite dizzy with the song. lVe've heard ol' Rao buzz it off and flip the texts once more, YYhile to answer Carrot's jokes,', we've almost hit the floor. But, oh teachers, teachers, teachers, lVe, poor subjects of your ire, Will soon loll on summer's beaches, And perchance, be kindled by your fire Oh Murph, oh Bferce, we'ye finally mastered spelling, ivhile Sager and Navins, our victories were swelling. With math and Stone we've often picked a bone, While smells - created by Simmons - really made us IHOZHI. But, oh life, life, life, lYe the students here, Because of these last months of strife Have less, of you, to fear! l39l -f- .AQ .L J 49277, ' ' ' QC ,fi 40 1 Z! -ni. -11 ...Q -iv 4-1 B I YI n Ll W --M 411 Unclerclassmen Roller! Boss This year the foothall team started the season with high hopes. The hackfield prospects were encouraging and the line developed exceptionally well. The fact that the team had a record of three wins and four defeats is no indication of its strength. It was a good team, hut then so was every team it faced. The Governors opened the season with a 6-0 victory over a confident Gro- ton eleven. The Red team dominated the offensive play hut were unahle to score until Bohhy Rex intercepted a pass and went all the way with the help of two key hlocks. It was a great game to win since the team had had only a week of practice. The team continued to improve and defeated Thayer 6-0 for its second con- secutive win. In the second quarter the Governors drove 60 yards and finally scored on a pass from Dirk Owens to Don Rice. In the second half the Gov- 0 ernors were forced to resort to a defensive game since the mud made the hall almost unplayahle. For the second week the team intercepted a number of passes. The following week the Governors faced an aggressive Moses Brown team and were heaten 6-0. Barry Gately's play, hoth offensively and defensively, was the only pleasing factor of the day. The next game was the highlight of the season. The Governors pounded out a 15-12 victory over a strong Milton team. Un the kickoff we recovered the hall in the end-zone for two points. Milton drove deep into Governor territory, hut Johnny Brandli intercepted a pass and ran 95 yards for a touchdown. In the second quarter Al Smith recovered a fumble and went over on the next play. This completed the scoring for the Governors, and the team had to play a defensive second half since llilton came back strong. The following week the Governors faced an exceptionally strong Belmont Hill team. Belmont Hill's powerful of- fense proved too much for the team and the game ended Q7-7. The Bed team was only able to score after Belmont Hill had annexed their Q7 points. Quarterback Johnny Brandli scored, and Jolm Salinger booted the extra point. The Tabor game at Marion was a heartbreaker from the Governors' stand- point. Un the opening play, Tabor raced the length of the field to score. This took some of the fight out of the Bed team, and before the half ended they were on the short end of a Q5-0 score. But the Governors came to life quickly. In the third quarter, with Jolmny Edgar and Johnny Brandli setting up the plays, Al Smith scored twice. John Murdock threw a pass to Skip YYoodruff on the five-yard line and Brandli went over to make the Nmfaf Q -.-.4 score Q5-19 with four minutes to go. The Governors began to drive again but lost the ball on a fumble. Just before the game ended, Tabor threw a long pass to make the final score, 31-19. The final game of the season was played against tl1e Harvard Freshman B team on Morse Field. The Governors lost by the score of Q0-7. Dirk Owens scored o11 a short plunge in the second quarter for the Governors' only tally. At the half, Gov- ernor Dummer led 7-6 but the heavier Harvard squad came from behind to win. This game was played under the most adverse weather conditions, which ham- pered both teams. Kluch of the Team's success must be attributed to the fine coaching it received. Coaches Sager, Murphy, Clark, and Bizzi did a wonderful job keeping the team prepared for its difficult schedule week after week. 0 O l cusoiixo Back Hoax' S. Maples, K. Sears, D. Thompson, B. STAm:Ns1r:R Yvhen over seventy-five candidates re- ported for soccer practice at the begin- ning of this year, the hopes for a success- ful season overshadowed the fact that only two letter men were returning. To find a cohesive line-up was the coaches' first and most important task. For the opening game the team had lots of spirit, but little experience. The Andover game was a disappoint- ment from the scoring end, but, despite this fact, the Governors played well. Wvith their usual strong, well-coordinated team, Phillips Academy was able to dominate play throughout most of the game and run up a score of 5 to 0. A week later, with first-game jitters under their belts, the Governors beat Watertown High. Captain John Gill scored the first goal on a penalty kick, and, late in the fourth quarter, Dodd hliles put the game on ice. The two full- backs, Lewis and DuGrenier, looked 5-1 especially good, and in later games, proved to be the Governors' mainstay. The Parents' Day game ended in a 4 to l victory for Milton. The Governors played strictly a defensive game, but to no avail. The lied and YYhite's only goal was scored by Vharlie Brown, on a very pretty shot fron1 his left outside position. Un the following Wednesday, the Red and White won over Belmont High School 3 to 1, scoring all three goals in the second period, two by John Gill and one by Eddie Dodge. Un a hunch, Coach Navins moved Franco Derba to an inside position and put Jerry Vaughn at the vacant outside slot to see if he could get some more scoring punch. On the next Saturday, this new combina- tion proved to be good enough to score three goals against a strong Belmont Hill team, but Belmont was equally as good, and held the Governors to a 3 to 3 tie. Trailing Q to 1 with only a few minutes of regular playing time left, Franco Derba scored for Governor Dum- mer, sending the game into overtime. Franco scored again in the first overtime period, but Belmont. was able to add the equalizer. The Governors went over the five hundred mark for the first, time by de- flating St. Paulis School, 3 to 1. John Gill, Jerry Vaughn, and Franco Derha split the posts for the Bed and White during the first half. The last home game of the season, against Tabor, was played on Morse Field, due to the heavy rains which had flooded the regular soccer field. After John Gill had put the Governors ahead early in the game, Tabor scored on a disputed play, one which seemed to take all the fight out of the home team. Tabor added two more goals later in the last period and the game ended 3 to l. For the Brooks game, the Governors were in hetter spirits. A surprisingly strong Brooks team controlled the play through most of the first half until Jolm Gill scored. A few minutes later, George Packard scored, heading the hall into the cage on a very pretty play. The second half was a see-saw battle in which neither team was able to push across a goal. In the season's finale, the squad trav- eled to Vamhridge to face Browne and Nichols. The season ended on a happy note with a Q to 0 victory for Governor Dummer, John Gill scoring hoth goals. The 5-3-l record of this year's team was the result of much hard work on the part of hoth the players and the two coaches, Mr. Navins and Mr. Traver. Governor Dummer's 1952 wrestling team earned recognition by becoming the school's first undefeated team in forty-eight years of wrestling. Coached by lfr. John Bright, who commenced practice before Christmas, the Governors overcame all opponents, including Milton, whom we had never beaten. The season opened on January 16 against the Browne and Nichols team. The Bed and lYhite won this meet with the entire team showing excellent form. llurdock, Smythe and Shohet gained ad- mirable decisions. Then the team jour- neyed to Dedham where a strong Noble and Greenough team was tied. Hjorth pinned his man, and Lawson, Smythe, and Krieger took decisions. A week later the Governors beat St. BIark's for the first time in six years. Highlighting the match was Iafolla's pin, and Hjorth's only loss of the year to an excellent man. Next we entertained Brooks at South Byfield and easily outdid them. On February Q, Roxbury Latin was beaten. Again the entire team did well, but it might be noted that Nader lost a close decision to an excellent man. Blilton Academy was the hardest team on the schedule, and the Red and lYhites had great enthusiasm. llilton got off to a fast lead, and both the team and the spectators were disappointed. Tom Larsen, in the 117-pound class, lost to an excellent foe by decision. Dick Nader next lost by decision to another of their clan. lvalter Lawson, wrestling their captain, had a hard time as expected and lost by decision. This made the score 9-0. VVinning a draw in the next match, we broke our losing streak. Steve Shohet did well in this match, containing a highly contested illegal hold called against lllilton. S. Sargent, wrestling at 147, 61 lost by decision, but then we began to move. Captain Rib Smythe, adding another victory to his record, practically pinned his man but finally had to settle for a decision. John Hjorth, wrestling in his enlightening fashion, followed and also produced a decision. Then John Murdock took the mat and pinned his man beautifully in the second period. We were a point behind as the last match started. Mike Iafolla, in the unlimited class, produced the finest match by get- ting the most valuable decision of the season. Later in the week, at an after- noon meeting, Mike was made Mayor. The next two meets were easily won. XYith the Andover J.Y.'s, we lost but one match, and that one was because Mike Iafolla could not make up for the 60 pounds that his opponent had on him. The Red and Whites went to Tabor, where Lawson pinned his man early in the first period. Murdock and Smythe wrestled well in decisioning their men. In our second year in the Interscho- lastics, we placed fifth out of eighteen teams, thereby gaining two places over last year. The entire team entered and made a good showing, but only Smythe, Murdock, Lawson. and Shohet placed. Smythe earned second place: Murdock placed third: Lawson and Shohet both reached fourth in their weight divisions. This has been an outstanding year for the Governors. The entire team wrestled well throughout the season, but it should be particularly noted that Smythe, Mur- dock, Hjorth, and Iafolla lost only three matches. lYe scored over a hundred more points than our opponents. Much credit for the splendid team should go to llr. Bright for his excellent coaching and to Rib Smythe for his un- paralleled leadership of the squad. ff , as 6-, 1 -' v g K, ff If ,sf v tl ep K '51-4 v....1 '1 tr i L: X ,.. Tunoa, III A successful season can be due to vari- ous factors. The capability of the coach to bring out and develop the specific po- tentialities of the different players to an efficiency wherein the team works in unison, the determination to outplay the opponents-these are all definite ad- vantages which can result in a well-co- ordinated team. The success of this year's team, although it was a combina- tion of these principles, was largely the result of one person, Captain Donald Rice. Don was the backbone of the team and repeatedly carried the games over the rough spots to ultimate wins. The other players, each in their own individual performances, also supplied the necessary abilities and spirit which resulted in a fine basketball season. Steve Ream and Dave Hicks alternated at center, with Hicks occasionally filling in at forward. Bob Rex, a very good de- fensive guard, was the most adept at set- shots. Al Smith and Hump Zabriskie, back from last year, were efficient back court men. This year the team played more than the usual amount of games, sixteen, and won seventy-five percent of them, which illustrated the strength that the players demonstrated on the floor. St. Sebastiaifs was the first school that the team faced, and they emerged victorious by one point, -I-3 to 4-Q. How- ever, in the next game, a stronger team, l64l Lynn English, took us by nine points. After that loss, the Governors piled up eleven straight games in the winning bracket. Une of the more interesting games was on January 23 when a Harvard house team visited the school with several alumni who had played on the 194-9 team, but they were not able to take the 1952 aggregation. Un the second of Febru- ary, Massachusetts Maritime forced our players to work hard for a victory. Al- though many of the games were won only by a few points, several games were not even close. The Browne and Nichols and Milton games gave the other boys on the squad a chance to play. The last game the team won was against the M.I.'I'. Freshmen, in which another basket for MIT. would have reversed the outcome. After this thrilling game, the Governors lost two away. The last garlic with Hebron was very close all the way, but Hebron got the point they needed and took the game, 52 to 51. Although the scores of the final three games would seem to disprove the fact, the team never worked harder than at the end of the season. A widespread sickness may have been a contributing factor to the team's apparent late-season slump, although this is not said as an attempt to alibi the losses. Coach Navins, Manager Howard Quimby and the players, themselves, all considered the season superior. CHARLES B. BROWN, Center JOSEPH G. COOK, JR., Defense N. NIATHENV GROSSINIAN, Center WILLIAM D. Vnder the able guidance of coaches Murphy and Duffy, however, the season's prospects were not alto- gether gloomy. Last year's lettermen, headed by Vaptain Ned 1Yerner, were augmented by valuable newcomers. The Governors faced a veteran Saint Marks outfit in their first game of the season at thc Lynn Arena and bowed by the close score of 4-2. The outdoor game against Saint Sebastian's was cancelled through lack of ice: then Noble and Greenough decisively defeated the Bed and 1Yhite by a score of 8-0. There fol- lowed a win over Brooks School by 5-1 at Brooks, and a loss to Saint Sebastiaifs by 3-0 in the Boston Skating Club. The Governors then suffered a 2-1 setback at the hands of Danvers High School on a very slushy Morse Field Rink. The team hit their stride with a 1-0 victory over Browne and Nichols, a game that saw the Governors outskate their oppo- sition in every period. Then came suc- cessive losses to Belmont. Hill and Stoneham High School, winners re- spectively of the Prep. School and G.B.I. leagues. After winter weekend, the team finished up the season's last three games by tieing Milton, 0-0, beating Middlesex, 5-1, and beating Hebron Academy by the score of 6-4. The usual lineup consisted of ffharlie Brown centering for a line of George Packard and Eddie Dodge, at right and left wings respectively. For the second line, Matty Grossman, Dick Osgood, Vharlie Palmer and Bill King all saw action. The defensemen were headed by Captain Ned 1Yerncr. Ned played fine hockey all season long, and his leadership was an asset to the team. Other defense- men were Joe f'ook, Phil Smith, and Prior Morrell. Dick Marr was the Governors' ever-capable net-minder. The scoring was relatively evenly divided, with Eddie Dodge, Charlie Brown, George Packard and Ned 1Verner re- sponsible for a majority of the goals. Highlighting the season were the tie against hffilton, the 5-1 victory over hfiddlesex and the 6-4 victory over Hebron. The Hebron victory was es- pecially satisfying, as many of the team were ill that day and the Bed and WVhite were seriously underinanned. hfuch credit for the season must go to hlr. hlurphy and hlr. Duffy, who mould- ed a green and inexperienced team into a well-polished machine without the bene- fit of ice for practices. l67l vi' Q16 Q V Y I ..f- -' s I 68 f f .A .- - 1 f v v 3 ,L - -1 L... 2 f v ur 2 -A 1 7 A P sv -C. BROVVN During the winter of 1951-59 the ski team at Governor Dummer prospered. Due to some frequent and heavy snow- falls, the team managed to arrange three meets. Although they lost two decisions, their first Andover fray resulted in the first victory ever recorded by a Gover- nor's ski teaIn. The other two clashes, one with Exeter, the other a return bout with Andover, were lost by close mar- gins. Co-captains Rod Rose and Henry McFarland exhibited their usual speed and prowess in that Andover victory, 169 taking first and third places respectively. C'oach Traver took the entire squad on numerous Sunday excursions, including one to Mt. Sunapee, New Hampshire. Taking all factors into consideration, this year's skiing season was a success. Numerous downhill and slalom races on the Ingham lieadwall, as well as fre- quent cross-country jaunts through the scenic Ingham National Forest, con- tributed to a well diversified athletic pro- gram offered to the members of the ski squad by our capable, experienced coach. 1 I ,JV A U.. Although snow dominated the road a great. deal of the time, many good Workouts were accomplished, so that by the time the first meet arrived, a fairly well-rounded team was in hand. The Governors took 5th in the prep school relay at the Boston Garden with Crockett, Dow, Swenson and Carter running. Later on in the season, with good representation in Inost events, the Governors beat the Exeter J.V. and Roxbury Latin in dual competition. In the New England Prep School Championships at Andover, the Governors placed third out of six schools. Varter did well in the hurdles, taking second place. Lewis and Idler were in a tie for second place in the high- jump at 5'9 . In the last Ineet of the season at Bowdoin, the Governors took fourth place. Particularly outstanding was lYindy Gale in the 1000-yard run. Also doing well during the season were Bailey in the dashes, and Getchell in shot-put. l71l N 1. 94 ffl I 9 'Ti f' YSIIU 1, q, x U21 mm vw QI mx vx M 1 , Qiexgff' 1 my A 'f ,af.......-..... .,A. ,, 73 1 f 552: mi I - bqjw Inv t xl ii . . The caliber of singing this year was raised considerably, due to the tough competition at the be- ginning of the year. Through Mr. Sager's untiring efforts and hlr. St.one's great patience, the club had a very successful season. The highlight of the season was the annual New England Preparatory School Music Festival Chorus which was held in Symphony Hall on lllarch Qnd. Singing with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under the direction of G. lVallace VVood- worth, director of the Harvard Glee Club, was a great and memorable event that none of those who participated will forget. The combined choruses of eight schools sang Randall Thompsoifs Alleluia, lilozartis Eine Kleine Nachtmusikm and three chorales and choruses from The Blass in B Minorw by Bach. It was a thrilling presentation made possible only through a great deal of effort and time on the part of all concerned. The first joint concert. of the year was with the VVindsor School Choral Class at their school in Boston. Among the favor- ite selections sung by the combined clubs were La Belle Helene by Offen- bach, Jesus, Joy of Man's Desiringu by Bach, and Christmas Carol by Holst. The Governor Dummer Glee Club directed by Mr. Sager contributed Steffeas The Battle Hymn of the Be- public, Berlin's Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor, Rodger's VVintergreen for Presidentv from Of Thee I Sing, and Rodger's Poor Judy from Oklahoma, John F. G. Clifford and M? stone were the accompanists. The boys were guests at dinner preceding the concert and at a most enjoyable dance after it. On February 9th the Glee Club trav- 95 eled to the Beaver Country Day School- The combined clubs sang Turn Back, 0 Man by llolst and the Crucifixus from Mass in B Minor by Bach. The Governors sang, in addition to the songs sung at Windsor, The Lord's Prayer by Malotte and the Bacchanale from La Belle Helene by Uffenbach. Another enjoyable dance followed. Un February 23rd the Glee Club jour- neyed to the XYalnut Hill School in Natick for a joint concert. The dance afterwards was the best of the year with a good time had by all. Un lllarch 8th, the Glee Club was host to the girls of the Dana Hall School Glee Club. This was the first home concert for the Governors. Among the selections sung by the combined clubs were Blo- zart's Ave Yerum Corpus and Thomp- son's Alleluia A dance was held in the Cobb Boom following the concert. An extra concert was given this year by thc Glee Club at the Manchester District Rotary Club meeting on April 17th. It was at this concert that the Meistersingers made their debut. They sang Brush Up Your Shakespeare and The Uld Ark's A-moverin'. David Powers was president of the Glee fllllb, and also played the saxophone at the Dana llall School Dance in the Cobb Boom. The soloists were lYindy Gale, tenor, Steve Shohet and John Blur- dock, bass. Klr. Benjamin Stone was an invaluable aid in directing the basses and as accompanist. The managers, who helped make out the dance cards and supplied each Lawrence hlelchior with music, were Rick Blackmur, Jack liucas, and Al Starensier. The real credit for the great success goes to Mr. Sager for his willingness to spend a great deal of time helping individuals as well as the group in general. The purpose of the society is to promote scholarship and to recognize scholastic achievement. In secondary schools its function is, therefore, comparable to that of the Phi Beta Kappa Society in colleges. The by-laws of the society state that to be eligible for election a student must attain a minimum standing of eighty per cent during his senior year and must stand in the upper fifth of his class. A three-fourths vote of the faculty members is necessary for election, and the members are pledged to consider each candidate's record during the earlier years of his secondary school work, his diligence, particular abilities or deficiencies, and the nature, and number of courses on which his average is based. This year the annual initiation banquet was held on Friday evening, Slay sixteenth. The speaker was Dr. Howard B. Jefferson, President of Clark I'niyersity, NYoreester. l99l Wh..
