ALLEN The opening game with Groton on September 28th, here at home, proved very successful for the Governor Dum- . mer eleven. Thanks to the beautiful end-play of Brad llarlow and the passing of Vaptain Pete Sutton, we completely avenged the defeat of the year before. Coach Sager was especially pleased because he had whipped into shape an almost entirely inexperienced team with only four returning letter- men. Our hopes were high that we would beat Thayer the next week at South Braintree. But the Governors ran into trouble with Thayer. Their passing attack was too perfect for us to handle and they made two touch-downs on passes in the first half. The outstanding feature for the Governors in the first half was again the beautiful end play of Brad Harlow, and the fact that our line, MR. ARTHUR nv' SACFR paced by Frank DuGrenicr and Ed lvmmh Feeley, who was playing against his alma mater, stopped completely their running attack. In the second half, however, the story was very different. On the first play Ed Rogers plowed through the Thayer line for a first-downg and this was followed by a precision Sutton pass which was snagged by Harlow, who then dodged man after man, to score. Rogers scored the extra point on a line plunge. After this spurt of power, the Governors were unable to do anything more and the game ended with the score: Thayer IQ, Governor Dummer 7. The second home game was played on October 12th against the very powerful Kimball Ifnion team. The Governors were stopped cold by these K.U.A. men, who scored practically at will. This game did show the home fans one thing, though: that our team had the spirit and determination to keep fighting against over- whelming odds when there was absolutely no hope. The game finally ended with the score: Kimball Ifnion 33, Governor Dummer, 0. The Governors made up for this defeat the next week at Milton where they tied a team which had been unbeaten for two years. Our entire team was clicking. Pete Sutton was especially remarkable for his running and passing. ln the third period Milton ea lured an G.lD.A. fumble and drove from our forty-yard line to our two- fill ..--. Wle were unahle to score the extra point and the game ended, Milton 13, Governor lluininer 13. Un Oetoher 26th. the Belmont Ililt team played a match l1ere in South Byfield. The day was a miserahle one rainy and cold. Apparently the Governors were not clicking in their play, heeause we were heaten I3-0. livery possihle hit of had luck dogged us during this gameg our line and hackfield were in a definite slump. lt was really a very discouraging' game to lose. Our veterans, Fred Macliurnie. Billy Brown. and lien Pearson, Jr., all from Newburyport, started t.he game against Nloses Brown the next week. The most. col- orful play was eontrihuted hy lien, in the line, who hlocked kicks, punted, and in general played an outstanding' game. The game was hittcrly fought throughout. the opponents scoring only in the last few minutes of the fourth period hy taking ad- vantage of a very unfortunate fumhle. A heautiful game at center was played hy Frank DuGrenier. 4 r w Governor Duunner closed its sea-son on NOVCllll7Cl' Jth, when it met lahor Acad- emy at llarion. The Governors were completely snhinerged as the Tahor team went to touchdown after touchdown. The Governors' season was not a successful one from the point of view of score: hut, as Coach Sager says, score is not everything. Vonsidering the size and strength of our opponents, the team did very well. Ilowever, with practically the whole hackfield returning, and with Frank DuGrenier playing again in the center position. the Governors hope to regain their prestige as a winning team next year. : . 32: X ,Kfff, , V, , 62 ,Z , X ,X . John Morgan was back as captain, capably supported by other experienced soccer players such as Jay Curtis, John Heyl, Al Hughes, Danny Hall, and Ash Eames. However, at the start the team was handed a pair of defeats by the Har- vard Freshmen and Exeter. In both these games the soccer team's scoring power was hampered because Ash Eames was unable to play. The next week opportunity knocked. The Red and White answered with a three to nothing victory over Belmont High and then another victory of the same score over Belmont Hill. The Gov- ernors were hitting their stride, and proved it a third time by going on to beat a powerful and resourceful Milton team the following week. This game was the climax of the season. It was MR. HOWARD J. NM-INS one of the most exciting games ever p,,m.1, played at school. Throughout the game the scoring was evenly balanced between the two teams. Three of the four goals scored by our team were scored by Mcflusker. Ash Eames, to the relief of the Governors' rooters, booted in a beautiful angle shot which clinched the game for Governor Dummer. The next contest, which was with Watertown High, resulted in a 4-4 tie. The Red and White then met two discouraging defeats. A mediocre Andover team de- feated us 0-1. The Governors fought back gamely, but were unable to score. The Andover captain said that we deserved to win the game. Medford High gave the team its usual expert drubbing by ehalking up five points to our one. However, the second team managed to hold Medford scoreless in the last quarter. The Red and White wound up the season by defeating Tabor, 3-1, in a thrilling game which ended in a brilliant teamup starting at midfield and ending in a pass to Mefnsker for the final goal. It was satisfying to know that Tabor had, in the previ- ous week, defeated lV1edford 1-0. The season was the most successful in three years because the team not only had remarkable spirit in games, but also had the willingness to work extremely hard on the practice field. ,.. 64 . I ' - W The Hockey Season By SAM ALLEN VVarm weather cut the Governors' hockey season from our scheduled fifteen games to seven, and reduced the use of our new rink, a replica of that at the Boston Garden, to a few days' use. VVe opened with the Micldlesex game here, on January 11th. Although the guests scored first and held their lead through the first period, we came ahead to win, 4-3. On the 22nd we met the Brooks School at North Andover, to win again by 4-3, with the Suttons, Wilson and Mcffusker doing the scoring. The next day Belmont Hill School came to our rink and beat us 4'-0. This score would have been far worse had it not been for the splendid defense of Wilson and 1VIeCusker. while Pearson played a spectacular game at goal. On February 6th the team met MR. AWOL MACD. RIURPIIX' Noble and Greenough in Dedham in a yofmj, very close game won by the Nobles, 4-Q. Here again our defensemen were outstanding. At Milton, the next week, we lost, Q-1, to Milton Academy. Pete Sutton made our only goal in a game that was a hard one to lose. Perhaps our easiest game was with VVinchester High on their rink. This we won, 6-2. And again, on February QQnd, we beat Browne and Nichols in our final game, 7-Q. Our veterans, Billy Brown, Fred lVIacBurnie and Ben Pearson were allowed in only a few of the games, by agreement with our opponents, who had no veterans. But when they did get in, the ice really melted under them. On the whole, Dick lNIef'usker, Lee Wilsoii, Pete Sutton, Danny Hall, and Ash Eames offered outstand- ing opposition. Dick deserves high praise for his very excellent leadership through- out the season. 68 L- mi' -.'-' if Y 1 . - - mar '.!r .I73-'i 1lf'5 l:?f'f T'H..,L - aff . .. ., a g 'mag ,.,, -Q-Wg! 15 '53 -B.-.- Vg' l708 A , -, . I708 as The Basketball Season liy SAM GWYNNIQ l hfany authorities who saw the Governors' quintet perform this year hold that the 194-7 team was the best one ever to represent the Academy. The record of nine wins and three losses emphasizes this claim. For sev- eral years Voach Navins has had to depend on one or two individual stars to bear the brunt of the work, but. this team differed. Team play was their strength. Early in the season John Patterson was elected captain, and he fulfilled all hopes throughout the season. lie- sides being high scorer with 150 points, Patfs all-round brilliance carried the team through many doubtful mo- . ments: and for his success he was awarded the Hamper Trophy as the most valuable player. Bob Deering. a l sophomore playing his second year of varsity ball, was another big factor in MR. IIOxX'ARl, ,L NAVINS our success. Ilis basket. play was p,,m.1, superb, and he contributed more than his share of points. Ilis greatest particular achievement was in the Kimball I'nion game when he threw the deciding basket from mid-court in the final minute to give the Governors a Q7-26 victory. Fritz Freeman again this year was the set-shot artist: and for his constant dependa- bility over the past two years. he was elected next year's captain. Two reserves who saw a great deal of service were Ed Rogers and Brock Blartin. The former was an able tloorman and could be counted on for several points per game. His defensive play in the Thayer game was one of the highlights of the season. lNIartin, a sophomore, was one of the team's best for all-round ability: and in covering Tabor's Prentiss, he gave a particularly outstanding performance. On Award Night Coach Navins spoke of the great record this Varsity had made and he thanked every member of the squad for the fine spirit and cooperation that each had shown. He failed to mention that everlasting credit for the success of the team was due to the speaker himself. 71 th 0 ... 4' 'W' - Fifi '.'-.ZF?,B,f- - V . 1 x V I g y A M 1- I L ' .f1ifff7. 1ifl ?f15'Qi1' : ,Z ' . . The Wrestling Season By HENRY DUNKER A very successful season was started when the returning lettermen under their new coach, Mr. Miller, opened their informal practice during the weeks between Thanksgiving and the Christmas vacation. In January the squad, with Knott, Baldwin, Jones, Heyl, and Dunker of last year's team, buckled down to intensive preparation for the match with the Andover Junior Varsity team, a match which we lost in a series of thrilling bouts, 23-0. The next meet, with Roxbury Latin School, ended with the Governors at the short end of a score of 21-0. Again this meet was characterized by very close, hard- fought matches. The following week the Red and White, on the road for the third time, lost to a polished Milton team by 32-25 but Bob Gaudin brought home the first team points of the sea- son. These first three encounters MR. 1, AUR ANC-E P. BIILLER showed steady improvement in the Coach team's powers. Our hard work in these matches paid large dividends in the Noble and Greenough meet, which we won, 23-11, and in which Gaudin and Ileyl scored by falls while Baldwin and Dunker scored by deci- sions. The team was beaten by Tabor, 23-5. Again the Governors, due to a technical error, lost to St. Mark's, 17-13, in a match wherein many substitutes had their chance to show their skill. We closed the season by beating Browne and Nichols, 23-13. In this match Gaudin increased his personal score of points to 19 with a double fall, while Knott and Palais turned in their first triumphs of the season, and Dunker and Ileyl gathered five points each by forfeit. The squad owes a great debt to Mr. Miller, whose coaching is responsible for their great progress, and a warm tribute is due Captain Knott for his steady inspira- tion. llearty thanks is due also to Mr. McKnight who ably helped Mr. Miller as assistant. 74- .. ,., ,A 1 t , A., 4 , ,N ., , -I-,.,.-,4ij.',-gf.,tying.,-,i - ,V yq 41 , .i -N .5 A ,V .- A ..r,..,1,..,.:. 4, li' V 1 . - d'.4'.,-' 'f - v.':.,,gih-. TRAVI-:R Very little snow fell in South Byfield this winter, to the discomfiture of the twenty-six boys on the squad and their coach, Mr. Traver. The squad, nevertheless, managed to he quite active: and in January and Feb- ruary four trips were taken to Guilford, N. H., where plenty of snow. two tows and a chair lift provided a variety of downhill skiing. Four trips were also taken to Locke-'s llill in Amesbury. and on February Q2 several boys entered the Wintcir Varnival there. Anton lirockleman, on leave from League Basketball, finished second in the Junior downhill and slalom races. Art DuGrenier took fourth place in these races in a field of over thirty. A busy season of five joint concerts had been planned by Mr. Sager, the Club's director. The first concert, which was with VVinsor School, was held in the fall term and featured the popular 'Tzvas The Night Before 1 Vzristnzas. A dance followed in the Cobb Room. The first concert of the winter term was with the Abbot Fidelio Society at Andover on the fifteenth of February. The Cantata, Christ Lay in Deatlfs Dark Prismz. by Bach, was presented by the combined voices, and the concert proved to be a great success. Two weeks later the Club travelled to Portland where they enjoyed a tea-dance and dinner as the guests of the Waynflete School. The Glee Club journeyed to Worcester on April fifth to sing with the Bancroft Glee Club, and three weeks later were host to Walnut Hill School. The annual Commencement concert closed the Club's successful season. Besides their regular Glee Club work, the Meistersingers had four extra con- certs. The first three were at a Bates College Alumni meeting, a Boston Governor Dummer Alumni meeting, and a Red Cross meeting. The climax of their season occurred on the twenty-second of February, when they sang as the main attraction at the Fireman's Benefit hlinstrel Show in Newburyport. Peter Sutton proved t.o be an able president as well as an excellent soloist. Leslie Richard and basso-profundo Ben Pearson were also soloists, and David Reed proved to be a very capable accompanist. In secondary schools its fuI1ctioII is, therefore. comparable to that of the Phi Beta Kappa Society in colleges. The by-laws of the society state that to be eligible for election a Student Inust attain a IIIIIIIIIIUIII standing of eighty percent, during his senior year and must stand in the upper fifth of his class. A three-fourths vote of the faculty members is neces- sary for electiong and the members are pledged to consider each candidate's record during the earlier years of his secondary school Work, his diligence, particular abilities or deficiencies, and the nature and number of the courses on which his average is based. This year the annual initiation banquet was held on Friday evening. May twenty-third. Dr. Kenneth Ballard Murdock, Francis Lee Higginson Professor of English Literature at Harvard, was the speaker. 93 N 481 '.i.E.'.g1, Q9V., .1 5' p - H B X X ' - X - .X skk' V XXX XXXXXXX '.. .M f X ff, fi f, !, 'L fi,-fi, f ,asf , - s X ,zz-s ,fff -a f ff, xg Pi- 4 , sexe f 'ra X V 1 V, . 4 1 45 11 L., 'a'.'i f M X i X rg, s X N 1, - .A - 1 . Each member is constantly aiming to improve his own target scores, while ten of the best engage in the annual scholastic Postal Match sponsored by the National Rifle Association, with which our club is affiliated. Our range, in spite of its being outdoors, was used on twenty-seven days in the fall term and sixteen in the winter, by groups numbering up to twelve. The moving of our shack, which measures some twenty by twelve feet, to its new site last fall provided a striking demonstration of what boy-power can do, for some forty boys lifted the structure and set it down again in its new location fifty feet south. This new position, facing south, is a great improvement over the old, which looked into the afternoon sun. Our best totals in the Postal Match were shot by Marshall Jones, Andrew l,eight.on, Brian Pendleton, Gordon Shaw, and Finley Stay. 94 - ,.-.. : - 1, .'if - --:,.'.,:f-av - 1.
