However, the pros- pects of a strong line seemed in contrast to the backfield. It was a light team as wellg and at Hrst, due to the constant juggling of positions, it seemed unbal- ancedg but as the season progressed each boy adapted himself to his berth and before the season ended one of the smoothest working teams which Mr. Sager has ever coached had been de- veloped. The season opened on September 30 when the team played Reading High School on Morse Field. Governor Dummer scored first when center George Douglas, intercepted a pass and lateralled to Captain Young who ran fifty yards to score. The conversion failed, and at half time the count stood SHEPHERD SIKES at 6 to 0. In the fourth period, Reading Captain-Elect marched seventy yards down the field for a touchdown. A perfect place kick put the visitors in the lead 7 to 6, and the game ended shortly afterwards with the score unchanged. On October 7, the Governors opposed Middlesex in a game which the Red and Whites won by the score of 12 to 0. In the first period, Shep Sikes took a twenty-five- yard pass from Bots Young to scoreg and in the third quarter, George Douglas made a diving interception of a Middlesex pass and ran sixty-five yards to score. One of the outstanding players of the game was lineman Frank Hinkley, who made at least half of the down-field tackles. The Kimball Union team came up to South Byfield on the 14th of October for the third home game. The scoring started when Shep Sikes crossed the end stripe standing up. Bots Young then broke away for a twelve yard run and another touch- down. The final tally came when Shep Sikes ran 60 yards to score. The game ended with the final score of 18 to 6 in the Governor's favor. 40 V o ' - 'W' .,., za- .. ,. . .. . . ., , ,., , . . ,. 'W . ,. The Soccer Season By GEORGE DUFFY When the 1944 soccer season opened, the prospects for the team were not too bright. There were only four lettermen returning: Miguel Ortega, Pete Den- nett, Tim Catlin, and Captain Bob Waugh. The first game was played against a very strong Harvard B Team and the Governors lost by a score of 5-0. The team showed a great deal of im- provement against Andover, but were defeated 5-0. The next game was also lost to Belmont High by a 3-2 score in a thrilling game. Miguel Ortega scored both points for the Red and White's. Next the team travelled to Milton. The final outcome was Milton 2, Gov- ernors l. The team had a great many chances to score in this game, but good plays on the part of the Milton goalie thwarted them. The following Wednes- day the team lost to a very superior LYMAN K' STUART, JR- Exeter Team, 6-0. In this game, the Captain-Elect Governors played their best game of the season and gave Exeter a battle throughout. The next game the Red and Whites were again on the tail end when Medford High defeated them 4-1. Again Miguel Ortega was the point man. Striving desperately for a victory, the team was defeated in their last game with Tabor Academy, Q-0. Although the team was winless this year, each and every boy on the squad gave everything that he had with a willing spirit. The individual improvement as well as the team improvement was very evident: and the coaches, Mr. Navins and Mr. Stone, were very proud of this team. Captain Bob Waugh was a very able leader as well as one of the best men on the field. Pete Dennett was a bulwark on defense and offense alike. Al Statler and Tim Catlin were outstanding at the fullback positions. The captain for next year, Chip Stuart, played an excellent wing position and Brad Davis in the goal was remarkable. As most of the teamn will be returning next year, the outlook is very promising for a good season. 44 1 ,, f. In this series the Governors won from Milton and Thayer, hut lost in the linals to a strong Belmont llill team. During the regular season the team looked good against all its opponents. Un January 10th Bots Young skated a one-man show against Browne and Nichols as he whipped in all live goals for a 5-Q triumph. ln the next game a last minute goal hy Young gave us a l-1 tie with hliddlesex. Thayer Acad- emy was the next victim, as they were , defeated in overtime, 2-1. Three days I later we entertained a very strong sex- tet from Stonehani High. Their superi- PAUL lY1THINGT0N ority was evident as they chalked up a l'apta1'11 9-Q win. The next day the team edged out a strong Brooks team, Q-1. On January 27th we tied Nohle and Greenough on goals hy Dennett and Tecl: and on the following VVednesday we routed Brooks again hy 6-1. The team was handicapped hy the illness of our goalie, Davis, hut his substitute Ash Eames, did remarkably well. t'pon completing this schedule, the Governors were invited to a hockey confer- ence at Dartmouth. Here the team did well in spite of losing two out of three games: to New Hampton, 5-921 and to Blount Hermon, 6-lg while we routed Tilton, 12-0. The season as a whole certainly was a very successful out-.eaniong the he-st in the School's history. Captain Paul Yvithington led and guided the team as though inspired. Bots Young, Allen Teel, Pete Dennett, Urmie Aldred, and Brad Davis as goalie, all will be remembered long hy those who watched them. The younger players show fine promise for the future. iVarm thanks and sincere appreciation go to the coaches, Mr. Murpliy and Mr. Koslowski. whose patience, understanding and skill are beyond praise. 47 , ,N 11 nf 'e. , ,V , , .h 'Hts Q ..,,x.1d.., 1 'YN 1-.,,..e1.-:ff . . e 4 gf, rw , x, -X X ' x, X X f 1 X' ' - 1' 1 X x X N X X X X XX A, M- , f , i X X 5 Q - ,xx I f 2. , Z' iv'Q f ' ' ', Z, f z - R X g X 59 . 1 - , . X . v I - I The Basketball Season By TIINI CATLIN This year Coach Navins was faced with the prospect of the return of only one letterman, Warren Hill,-a diffi- culty soon overcome with the appear- ance of George Douglas, Keith John- son, John Kimball and Lou Hamper, and three boys from last year's squad, fTom Brown, Frank Hinckley, and Warren Symonds. The season was satisfactory from the coach's point of view, since, of six losses, four were not decided until the last sixty seconds of play. This team had so much spirit and were so keyed up before the games by their desire to win, that their play was sometimes affected. The year opened with a home game against Rockport High. Our team showed its superiority by winning 30 y t to 17. George Douglas and Keith g WM, gg -MJ Johnson were conspicuous by their offensive play, with Tom Brown excel- GEORGE Sf DOUGLAS ling in the defense. The Governors Captain. then entertained the Story High quintet of Manchester in a thrill- packed game showing surprising power. The score was our way, 39 to 34. And again George Douglas was largely responsible for the Governor's victory with his out- standing offense. The most exciting game of the season was the last one played on the home court when the team gave battle to a strong Winchester High team, and lost 54 to 53. Throughout the season, the leadership of Captain George Douglas held the team in the fight through many a trying time. His offensive play kept the team on its toes, and his scoring power was a constant threat to the opponents. Hinckley, Brown and Symonds developed into extremely valuable players as the season advanced, especially good off the backboards. Hill and Hamper were very good deceptive ball players and set up many of the baskets. Johnny Kimball gave a most creditable account of himself and was a very valuable reserve. Though the majority of the first team will graduate, it is hoped that next year again Governor Dummer will be able to turn out a team that will make as fine a record. 50 i , . , ,.. -. ' A f -- . . . M- v- e W The Wrestling Season By Trio Mix:-in v - - . l nder the direction ol Nlr. Kle- Knight assisted hy Mr. Sager, our team laced a very strong and experi- enced series ol' wrestling opponents this year. At the heginning ol' the season there were some ol' the greenest possible hoys out for the sport: and the time was very short for the coaches. ahle as they were, to work them into shape. Wiith hut three weeks hefore the match with Phillips Exeter, Voach lNlcKnight drove the boys relentlessly in order to get them in condition. In our first meet, January 24-th, against Exeter, Vaptain Ortega and Bill Silver were the only two victors for G.D.A. and the final score stood at 31 to 6 for Exeter. Two weeks later the team was de- feated hy Roxbury Latin in a match in which Bob YYangh won two points. lxIIGl'EL QJRTEGA On Fehruary 10th the team wrestled flllpflllill one of the most experienced squads in the country: and we were very handi- capped, as neither of the coaches was ahle to he there. The team, however, made a good fight under the guidance of Miguel Ortega and inspired by the statement of the two substituting coaches, hir. Vnrrier and lNlr. Navins, who said: Wie think that you can win if you just get out there and stay on top. The final score was Milton 39 and the Governors 0. l The fourth meet was with Andover, on February ith. Ortega gained a decision and Shep Sikes pinned his man. The final score was 24 to 8 in favor of Andover. The team wound up its season with a meet against. Tahor here. Although the Governors won more single points, the opponents won the match hy the small mar- gin of 16 to 15. The loss of this match was due largely to the fact that Bob Scrihner pinned his man just one second after the time limit had run out. It is hoped that next year, with the return of more experienced boys, Governor Dummer wrestlers will bring in more points. 53 'fij'?f'.1Z735,E',-'.'.:1.,jL,1, l V V - I I. , I, .-.gxfpgv :i,Q,'-Q c 1 4 ':'ij I f.f.t--,J 1'-'61 . :': f-.-':-- '-Y r,-.1 a 12:11.11- -'-g,. Sager, has one of the finest reputations of preparatory school glee clubs. The boys' great interest in this extracurricular organization may be estimated by the large number who go out for it in the fall term. Because of the large inflow of new boys in the club this year, hir. Sager had an unusually stiff job of training on his hands. This careful training by Mr. Sager and hir. Stone bore fruit in our first concert, in the Newburyport High School. Although this concert was earlier than usual, the reputation of the club was upheld by its grand work there. Three joint concerts were held by the club this year. The boys were hosts to Abbot Academy of Andover and Walnut Hill School of Natick. After each of these concerts, dances were held in the living-room of the Phillips Building. The Glee Club was also entertained by the Bradford Junior College. This concert was also followed by a dance. The highlight of the season was the concert at Symphony Hall in Boston where the Glee Club combined with fifty singers from each of the following preparatory schools: Dana Hall, Walnut Hill School, Pine Manor, The Beaver Country Day School, Phillips Exeter Academy. Phillips Academy at Andover, and Milton Acad- emy. Approximately three hundred voices blended with the New England Con- servatory Orchestra to present Mendelssohnls Hymn of Praise' to a highly appre- ciative audience. The annual Commencement Concert climaxed the Glee Club's successful sea- son. Bradley Roberts, elected president at the beginning of the season, proved to be very capable in leading the club through its successful season, and the splendid solo work of Shepherd Sikes and of Richard Hinners greatly aided the Club. This year the annual initiation banquet was held on Friday evening, May 18. David McCord, poet, anthol- ogist, and editor of the Harvard Alumni 1 Bulletin was the speaker. WILLIAMS The Rifle Vlub, newly formed this year, has thrived beyond all expectation. Its range on the hill south of the hockey pond has been used steadily all the year in spite of the fact that the shelter did not survive the gales in January. The f'lub's afliliation with the National Rifle Association enables it to buy ammunition and to present awards offered to junior members. One hundred thirty-five awards have been won, and some very skilled marksrnen have been developed. The C'lub expects to arrange matches with neighboring school clubs in the near future. 68 f F0 L 5,4 ' f ew, 4 l l i , l I T1 it ., . l i l 5 l ii 1. li p i I i l i 2 1 Qi ll ir I 1 I It i l I I I i il l E 1, lb ii it I . r S sn , . However, this year under the expert guidance of Mr. Colin F. Soule, a former member of the famous Dartmouth Ski Team, the sport swung into its first real season with a small but enthusiastic squad of thirteen boys. Their activities were rather limited, consisting of a few contests among themselves and a couple of country trips, one of which was an excursion to Locke's Hill in Amesbury where the boys enjoyed a Sunday afternoon trying their new turns on a more difficult slope. Mostly underclassmcn were chosen for the squad so that next year, when they return, the school may have some well experienced skiers to compete in already planned meets. 70 in , .
