A LOOK BACKWARD The Mifflin sports picture of 1955 56 was one of dazzling triumph and ug nomlnlous defeat There were thrills and chills a plenty during the respective seasons gripping action was the keynote of almost every athletic contest To the gridiron the basketball court the ball diamond the cnnder track and in the pool the men of Mifflin sallied forth to battle the foe They tasted defeat more than they sam pled victory yet good sportsmanship the essence of competition was apparent in every contest in which the Mustang warriors engaged By far the loudest splash made in the Mifflin sports pool was made by the Mustang trackmen Under the capable direction of Coach William Firing the Cinder crew won the Berks County championship winning among others the Victory Meet and the Albright Meet the turning in a fine account of themselves in the Venzke Relays On the ball diamond the Mifflin tossers coached by John Tulley compiled a three and seven record acting as spoilers In their conference Came the fall and the spice of the GM sports menu football moved into gridders certainly were not shamed by enemy teams The month of November found the Mifflin gymnasium echoing to the thud of basketballs under the watchful eye of Coach John Tulley and when the smoke of competition cleared three months later the cagers had compiled a three and eleven record The basketeers got a fine kick out of beating Mount Penn the county champions of the 55 56 season On the female side of the picture the girls hockey team coached by Mrs Alice Sell went on to win the league championship compiling a record of six wins one loss and one tie The girls basketball squad also coached by Mrs Sell had a lot of fun in court competition winning two and losing eight We had one more champion the swimmers of Coach Charles Cuper Fighting tooth and nail they went on to win the laurels in their divisnon thus making a reputation for themselves in this highly competitive sport The last sport on the Mifflin agenda is tennis coached by Mr Joseph Mariorlello At the time the ARCHIVE went to press prospects were fine for some hot competition on the courts And so another year ends I . . The warm summer months have been heaven . . . full of life, laughter, and love for you, but they now are but gems in your wide and rich tapestry of ioyous memories. As the school bell tolls once more, every highway, biway, and narrow, dusty lane leads to school. Along one of these roads you walk or perhaps you ride in a school bus, or if you are very lucky you may be driving. You are beginning another year of school, another milestone in your life's history. You must lay aside much of your desire for freedom and fun, school means serious study . . . for you. In September you go to the Reading Fair as in other years, you sweat over the daily scores of the World Series, you renew old friendships and you make some new ones. This is your beginning of another school year. s 1 if -ll KL., 30. g fvi' iQ IX ,NJ pf' U '-1'- ' ull- Nik vu Uv 1Nlu ms ms. ,Am 1-yang, ug.. ,go Ya, ,mmm Hun nimz. .N 'il 4 fl pf' gi -I 'R ...Z saf' Wag 'Hu I Awww lg? The timbers of their small wooden ship, The Mayflower, groaned and creaked as a result of the weeks of continuous rivalry between ship and sea. Weary tho the small band of Pilgrims were, they began then to build a home in the new land for their remaining families and friends. So began one more chapter in the massive volume of American history. November is the month in which we have set aside one day in memory of the labors of our Pilgrim fathers. Here in G.M. a play is put on in assembly pertaining to Thanksgiving Day and what it means to each one of us, as in other years it is one of the more serious assemblies. To you the student, November means a lot more than merely recalling history, however, for in this month is climaxed another glorious season of football. Nature's panorama of gold and rust changes quickly, as in the twinkling of an eye the back- drop becomes one of gaunt, grey trees and feathery, snow-filled skies. You study, date, and enioy life, then before you know it November, too, is a memory. . ig, . 1' i' fit 541 an Q I 3 ll ' Q f I 4 i I Thar lhlll m December . . . the month of carols, sparkling Christmas trees, and un surpassed ioy, over the years of your life, if you stop a minute to recall your happiest, most exciting moments, you will probably find most of them have occurred in the merry month of December. As a child anticipation built up inside your little heart from the moment you heard the first Christmas carol until Christmas morning, then all the ioy of the season seemed to swell up and overflow inside you as you were led up to the glittering Christmas tree in your home. As you grew older each Christmas season meant a little more to you because now you could more fully understand the real significance of it . . . the birth of Jesus Christ. G.M. also presents a religious play during the Christmas season, but as a high school student, December means, most of all, a carefree vacation allowing lots of time for. ice skating, sledding, and , . . working. Yes, you are a student, but as the initial month of winter draws to a close school is quite the last thing you are thinking about, and before you 1956 lies before you. 5 . ? CL! X 2 :IQ S I A new month, a new year, a new scene on your widening tapestry of memories . . . this is January. As a Senior, i956 is the year you've waited for but which never seemed to arrive. . .the year of graduation. January is a basketball month, a popular sport on the school calendar and last year's J.V.'s are hotter than ever as they enter the game this season as Varsity players, Old Man Winter has not been loafing, for across the street, lawns, hills, and frozen lakes lies a thin film of snow, razor sharp skate runners flash across the ice on the local ponds, Within the walls of our school, the teachers, not to be forgotten, and students, work on toward their goal . . . the end of the 4th report period. GOV-LIN presses roll, Horne Ec Lab windows become steamed shut as a result of luscious, mouth- watering concoctions being prepared there. Archive Editors hustle to meet their deadline, weird smells seep under the door of the Chem. Lab, and report cards are distributed for the second time. Then before we know it, January has tiptoed by in the form of very typical days in a very typical American High School. As you sit in your classroom seat one day, dreamily watching some scattered snowflakes brush against the cold windowpane, you begin to wonder if spring will ever come. To a lot of people February seems like the month that will never end, and to some it is the most lazy and frustrating one of the twelve, but most of us here in GM. consider it neither of these. One outstanding example of this is the fact that Coach Cuper's Mermen came through with an undefeated record to become the Berks Swimming Champions, a real honor to them and to the school. Also, basketball season draws to a close with many of the senior players participating for the last time in high school competition. If you are a senior business student, you have been placed in an office iob and during the month of February you spend only half days in classes. Hats, hats, crazy hats! The seniors finally receive those long awaited obiects which so often during the last year have been the obiect of heated arguments. For one complete day and a half these black and white lids are seen all over G.M. Then with the faint smell of spring wafting over the countryside, the shortest month of the vear is soon behind us. I T ,.: :,,,.a- 4-59 9 N? Outside G.M. the March winds howl mercilessly, but inside things are cozy and warm, The gym teachers present the annual Gym Exhibition which is a lively demonstration of everything from weight lifting to dancing. Also March is the month of junior class plays, last year's being A Dance With Our Miss Brooks, by the Class of '56, and this year's entitled Strictly Formal by the Class of '57. Both are stage productions of which GM, can well be proud. 'QP Perhaps you are one of the staff announcers for Mustang Parade, G.M.'s weekly tape recorded radio show from WEEU. You well know the time and effort which Mr. Shrawder puts in each week for the interest of the programs, to make them all a success. Then toward the end of March those cold winds seem to change overnight into warm April showers, and Easter Sunday arrives. , .fu 1 C30 ff 1 4 I 18:11 , 1 I 2, an 'J fd, ' 4 ' 1 I Rt! In slippers of tiny purple crocus buds, and a cloak of tender green grass, she dances over the countryside on the heels of a gentle spring shower. Into this scene comes April, in a very unusual manner, for Easter Sunday and ApriI's Fool Day happen to be on the same day this year . . . April l. This is the time of your long awaited, much needed Easter vacation and you enioy it fully. Then you return to school with the last lap of the '55-56 year before you. Teachers. are pressing you to make up your back work before the end arrives, spring clothes appear on the fashion scene, along with the much needed umbrellas for those sudden April Showers, and spring fever is a common ailment of both students and faculty. All over G.M. teachers and students make the final preparations for summer vacation. Library books are returned, some being months overdue, desks and lockers are cleaned out, and those beat up textbooks are handed in to the teachers. Outside, flowers are everywhere you look, birds warble gaily in the treetops, and winter coats have long since disappeared from view. If you are a swimmer you may have braved the chilly spring water for your first dip of the season. On Sunday afternoons hikers and picnickers can be seen on almost every field or hillside you chance to see. Finally the year's supply of notes are delved into in preparation for final exams, and the fourth report period draws to a close, the report cards yet to be distributed, and then it's June, the month reserved for seniors. l l l l t N f 0 0 jun ill? -4 .I . 1 , 9 i ' 'fl-5' X3 'Q id H -oi . up , th mixture of feelings There are scarcely words that can fully express e ' eriences during the days of ac- which a sincere high school senior exp ' ' W' h' ou, as such a senior tivities preceding the graduation ceremonies. it in y ' fellowmen, a longing to be accepted is born an unconsious love for your as one of the group, and a deep sense of pride at having attained what you at one time had set as your goal.
