This has ex- tended to the point that we may see for ourselves the foundations laid which will mold into shape this land of ours. With changing times, new needs must be met, conquered, and eventually become our slaves. But even though the steps of progress are marching on, we will still hold on to our memories and look back upon them as stepping stones of life. We, the staff of the first ARCHIVE, hope that this yearbook will be the record you will use to recall them. Table of C ontents FACULTY SENIORS UNDERCLASSMEN SPORTS ORGANIZATIONS FEATURES Alma Maier Alma Mater, hail to thee Symbol of democracy Strong and mighty you will stand As God protects you with His hand Mifflin High to thee we sing As in thy halls our echoes ring Thy colors of maroon and gold Ever in our hearts we'll hold. SCHOOL COLORS Maroon and Gold THOMAS MIFFLIN Thomas Mifflin was born in 1744 in Philadelphia. His parents were of the Quaker religion. After attending a Quaker primary school, Mifflin attended the University of Pennsylvania. After graduating he traveled a year in Europe. Mifflin then entered business with his brother, but his interest and ambition as a speaker drew him into politics. He was a member of the First and Second Continental Congresses. When the Revolutionary War broke out Thomas Mifflin was appointed a maior and soon was appointed to Quartermaster-General. He displayed a desire to fight rather than command. He resigned in 1773, when he lost the favor of General Washington, and retired to his farm near Reading called, Angelica. At this farm much of the Conway Cabal was formed. When the war was over Mifflin again entered into the good graces of Washington. He served as President of the State Supreme Executive Council from 1788-1790. Historians have fre- quently told us that George Washington was not the first President of The United States. This is true because our country was governed by The Articles of Con- federation before our constitution was adopted. The Articles provided for a unicameral Csinglej legislative body. From it an advisory group, called a council, was selected and executive authority was vested in the chairman of this council. Historians frequently refer to the chairman of this council as the President of the United States. Therefore Thomas Mifflin can be rightfully credited with being President of our country. In 1790 Mifflin turned to state politics, serving as First Governor of Pennsyl- vania from 1790-1799. He died in 1800 after a long record of service to his state and country. He was buried in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. f GOUGLERSVILLE - .,v :. ' L EARN To UV! Although we shall be here only a year to reap a few benefits, the benefits for the under- classmen will be innumerable. One will not only be able to grow intel- lectually, but also socially. When we have been graduated we will always cherish our memories as being the first class of Governor Mifflin. N Arm' 1' F ' . Being olayed on Friday, January 29, it was the first girls' basketball game to be played on West Reading's new floor. Gaining a decisive lead in the first quarter, the Mustangettes held the lead throughout the game, Leading the team in the scoring department was Frarces Horst with 23 points. PRINTERS 3 V.:- EDITCJRIAL This problem cannot be regulated too well by the teacher in charge or the Ii- brarian because they don't know which students really wish to do serious study. lt is the obligation of the person him- self to use the permit with discrimination. He should observe if his going to the library for pleasure is habitual and curb it. The teachers can, however, be on the lookout for the person who always wants a permit for no apparent reason. To him should be denied the privilege of leav- ing the study. l.et's all try to make an honest effort this week to let the other fellow who really needs a permit use it. And in the calm of lonely, quiet nights, The thought of once again returning there Sets off a fantasy that's free of care. The fantasy is lost with dawning lights. But still the thoughts and hopes will linger on, And when man can return, when dreams are real, He'll close his eyes to all things changed and feel That all has been the same while he was gone. He'll wake and take his place in life once more And everything will go on as before.
