Y' omecoming was more exciting than ever this year thanks to our hard-working, almost unde' feated Redskin Football team, which brought more spirit to our fans than the last couple of years. Almost everyone was taking part in the pre- game activities, which consisted of the orange pass, the bedsheet race the 3-legged race, and the wheel- barrell race. These events were won, of coarse, by the class of '88, who has won every year but one. The Homecoming king and queen this year were Jeff Showalter and Kate Singer. Other senior candif dates were Miriam Blosser with Jeff Wingard, and Soniia Steggleman with Mike Essig. A major part of the homecoming spirit was due to an exciting pep rally during the last hour of school, which began with the t'Kiss the Pig Contest. Mrs. Faucet had practically unanimously won this contest with a whopping S lO0 in pennies. The other half of the rally consisted of the faculty whipping the seniors in a playful game of football: - each of the senior football players adding their line of spirit to the day. All in all, homecoming was again, the major activity ' lead our football team into win- ' our year of the season which ' nals, but unfortunately ending ning the sectio at regionals. 6 5-ff Miriam Blosser congratulates Kate Singer, the new homecoming queen. A play fitting this description was per- formed at Goshen High school this year. A Black Comedy centers around a poor artist named Brinsley Miller who is on the verge of being discovered. ln order to impress his soon to be father-in-law and the infamous George Bamburger, Miller steals his next door neigh- bor's expensive furniture. Catastrophe strikes as the fuse blows, re- sulting in a total black out. To add to the confusion Harold Gorringe, Miller's neighbor shows up. Caught between finding a flashlight thus revealing the stolen furniture to his neighbor or ruining his big break due to lack of light, Miller is stumped. Unfortunately for Miller, his ex-girlfriend Clea shows up. Miller finally decides that his big break and Clea wins out in importance. Dave Slotts doesn'l seem to notice that the ball has stuck to the floor. ll :- .111 J' x ,, .af v ,.--' 1 Being in the Hoosier State, inevidably basket- ball is a popular sport. Members of the basket- ball team are not the only people who like play- ing: faculty members and other students also enjoy the sport. Jason Kramer who ended the intramural season with a broken ankle says, the game is too intense, to easy to get injured. They need better referees. Because of its popularity, intramural basket- ball has grown in to a ten team competition at GHS. The teachers seem to enjoy ending a day with a good game of basketball. As Mr. Weaver states, the kids are very competative including the faculty members. Kidder who also headed the program agreed by saying, sometimes you would think, win or lose out there is a matter of life or death. Kidder also says he feels it is a worthwhile organization. Chrissy Miller Even after three months of marriage. superstar, Troy Kidder still has that special touch. I 1 gn, ,-. .C if x I V ' 55 'fffx .ff ' ,Ja ,P if U U S 109 4 0 Q 'U .. M -V-.all The Long nd Winding Road by Matt Burridge The Freshman's day begins very early in the morning when mommy wakes them up in time for the bowl of Wheaties and toast because as mom always says you will eat a good breakfast as long as you are in this house. How do you expect to survive in the morning? After a torturous breakfast of mom look- ing over your shoulder to see that last piece of crust eaten, after all you'll grow a beard quicker if you eat crust, it's time for a quick shower. On second thought - do freshman really wash? lt is then time to get the Trapper Keep- er prepped and ready to go. A big Citizen- ship l test is waiting in the wings, and the volumes upon volumes of notes already taken in the first two weeks must be aligned correctly. Everything completed at home, it is time to board the vehicle from Hell - The Blue- bird model 345, Goshen Community Schools yellow school bus. So special to the administration that it is blessed with number i7 on either side of it, and equipped with a small space heater in the second to the left side. As it winds through the Maple City streets. thoughts of eager anticipation fly through the freshman's mind. Then shooting skyward from Redskin Road, the three floor hang-out of all the cool upper classmen, towers down upon the freshman and beckons them in. The first and second floor hallways are crowded, but to get to lst period Algebra they must walk through the Hallway of the Gods. A straigt-away as long as the Indy speedway and full of seniors with menacing glares, and complete men look- ing for a freshman girl target, The day sometimes goes quickly, but there is a chance to meet new friends that they will remember for the rest of their lives, and participate in activities and mo- ments that will forever be a part of them. This is the first of four years that quite possibly are the most fun, memorable, sad, and important years of their entire lives. I Jarrett, Vickie Johnson, Marti Jones, Angie Jones, Chris Juday. Matt 774 Y t A , V? 1 I - . 5 . .. ti X If li 'Roll With The Changes' by Matt Burridge Sophomore speech. The alliterative phrase struck terror in the hearts of all the second-timers. It meant a long night of standing in front of a full-length mirror practicing until you could keep your hands out of your pockets, and trying to say something at least half-way decent to keep attention. All the while dreading those terri- ble moments when every white, bulging eyeball will be fixed to you, your every moment. And then slowly the question fills every guys mind, ls my fly down or not? l've jost got to move my hand slowly for a check, there . . . there . . . little more . . . whewl Zipped to the top! After this was over, more good things came the sopho- mores way. Such as trying to unlock the secret that has puzzled such men as Plato and Galileo, why the sophomore class nev- er gets around to putting on a variety show. The plans are always made but as usual they always fall through. Also the struggle to wait it out until you get your license, or find someone dumb enough to take you everywhere. Sopho- mores finally get a glimpse of what it's like to pull into the Phend Field parking lot, step out of their own car, look at GHS silhouetting the landscape and think, Two years down two to go. - Matt Burridge James, Shannon Jaskola, Thomas Jensen, Katina Jerlecki, Cathy Jernigan, Tamara Johnson, Renita Jones, Terry Juday, Jason Kasprzak, Chad Kaufman, Kevin Kaufman, Mike Kaufman, Monica Kimpel, Lori Kincaid. To learn about American History gave us a great sense of pride to be an American, The soldier and the Nazi movies gave great insight to a way of life we could not coma prehend otherwise: not to mention all the movies about our presidency and the Con' stitution, J.J. Juday and Mindy Altenhof. tcurrently taking the classj, add their opin- ions, Those Alister Cooke movies were so incredibly inspiringg They'll never know how much we appreciate them keeping the volume up so loud that we could not miss Alistar's inspiring tale of American Histo- ry. The major project of the History class was the dreaded six-weeks outside read- ings. These reports gave tremendous in- sight on subjects that we didn't have the time to study in detail during the class hour, These reports gave us the chance to go into the details that satisfied are need of learning history. You know. the kind that every T7 American has in their bathroom. The teacher even has made fun of me. She called me over and said, Maybe on show- and- tell day you can bring the matching seat cover. lt's ok though I got even a month later. when I threw up on her lap after milk and cookies time didnt agree with me But without too much trouble. I made it to the final year of elementary school. sixth grade Here I discovered girls and by the end of the year I had gone steady with every girl in our ' class. with the exception of Dorthy Kronos who on occasion had eaten dirt and insects as well. Finally I graduated to junior high where the rules of life got more ambiguous. Here. having girlfriends became less fun. there was no recess and even if there would have been the girls would not play for fear of dirtying their S30 sweaters. Also I found out that you must play at least one sport or no one will sit with you at lunch. Before I figured out all the junior high rules, I was off to the big High school. It is here where you find out if you are a Geek , a 'Prep . a Jock or a Rat , I guess this is done so you can at least fit in some where immediately. Plus you can hate over half your class mates efficiantly without having to get to know them personally. Saves time. Good ideal Finally, dating the entire class is out. There's the pressure of finding that one special person so she can wear your class ring. Put three balls of yarn around it. for extra cushion and the best part of that is you can invite her over for T.V. on Saturday. You don't have to spend money to impress her: except for that special prom night. The most expensive and uncomfortable night of the year After her parents and your parents take pictures and ohh and ahh, its off to a restaurant where your tux and her green dress are the victim of much laughter, finger pointing and I remember whens . Finally its the dance. Yes. you have to dance in that and like it too. The only relief is the l:OO A.M. movie which is usually something already over used by HBO. But thats ok because a nap is what you had in mind anyways. Where are those nap-mats when you need them? Finally. graduation. Get me out of here. Our sophomore year, our only means of entertainment, sitting in the halls was soon to be diminished. This was our major issue when we were mature i5 year olds. Our junior year. our smoking section was abolished, This devastated the lives of many on a more serious note, we also lost a good friend Ken Hoffer.
