PROPHECY Dear Lotte, Frannie and I are graduate nurses now. We spend part-time in the hospital and the rest as visiting nurses. Last Saturday, on our rounds, we surprisingly ran into a lot of our old friends. First thing in the morning, we were called up for an emergency case, jack Richner, a heroic pilot, was brought in, critically injured. His plane, en route to Paris, crashed in Queens, and he rescued eight passengers. Among them were Joan Fischer, Jean Hawkins, and Adele Pechar, who were on a pleasure cruise around the world. Father Cocks was there to administer last rites. The famous husband and wife doctor team, Quacken-bush and Young, performed a skillful operation, while Gloria Pierce was giving Jack hypo needles. When our car refused to start, we called the nearest garage, The Greasepot, and the owners, Joe and Bill Hawkins renewed our car’s vigor. We stopped downtown at an insurance office, where bald-headed Nickey Boley is vice-president. As we walked in, his secretary, Edna Vogel, jumped off his lap, and Jimmy Barron, now office boy, scurried to his corner. We head a noise outside the window and trudging down the street was the Salvation Army Band, led by Susan Barnes, still giggling and twirling her baton, while Alary Luft was clanging the cymbals. James Petzen was bravely singing Abide With Me.” We stopped at the first house on our list. Out in the backyard was Janet Lynch hanging out huge baskets of clothes. Dolly White was in the other side cooking breakfast for her five children. They both like married life. Just then the earth shook and a house across the street blew up. When the explosion was over, we saw Dick Hansen and David Keller hanging on a tree with a test tube in their hands. When we saw they were still alive, we ran over to Faith's Pharmacy for some iodine. We traveled a hundred miles before we stopped at Frieda’s Hash House” for dinner. We remembered G. H. S. when we saw Joan and Pat Lewis with their hair in nets, scooping out mashed potatoes. 18
