Nlarco and Giuseppe Palmif-ri. chose Gianetta and Tessa as'their brides and join the company of peasant girls and gondoliers in gay songs before leaving to prepare for their weddings. The Duke of Plaza-Toro-at the moment in somewhat straitened circumstances-arrives in Venice with the Duchess, their daughter. Casilda, and their 'Lsuitefl the drummer Luiz. in search of the heir to the throne of Barataria, to whom Casilda is informed she was married by proxy when a baby. The infant prince had been taken from his heretic father by Don Alhambra del Bolero, the Grand Inquisitor of Spain. brought to Venice and placed in the care of a gondolier. Though the gondolier-now dead- had brought the prince up with his own son and never could tell which was which, Don Alhambra assures the Duke that there is no doubt whatever that the prince is either Marco or Giuseppe. The happiness of the two gondoliers and their young wives is disturbed by Don Alhambrals announcement that one of them is the King of Barataria and that since the former monarch and his court have been killed in an insurrection. both gondoliers must leave their wives and go to take up the reins of government jointly until it can be determined which one is king. Marco and Giuseppe explain that they abhor kings and class distinctions and that all men will be equal in their kingdom. 'Xre you peeping? Marco and Giuseppe and their gondolier friends are now enjoying life in their monarchy "tempered with Republican Equality," but are delighted when Cianetta, Tessa and the other contadine arrive. Don Alhambra is shocked at the unconventional changes in the court. The monarchs in turn are shocked to learn that one of them is an unintentional bigamist, having been married in infancy to Casilda. The Duke-his fortune now repaired-arrives with the Duchess to present Casilda to her husband, meanwhile seizing the opportunity to give Marco and Giuseppe a lesson in proper deportment. The identity of the king remains a mys- terious and complicating factor until the appearance. of Inez who was the prince's nurse in his infancy and who is able to solve the dilemma to the satisfaction of all. .1-f N ". . . as one individual."
