VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE Back in 1927, the Smith Hughes Act was passed. This act was that the Federal Government Was to give to the State Government certain sums to be given to schools to help pay the salaries of vocation- al teachers. Illinois also allots funds for this purpose., In this state schools are reimbursed 5096 of vocational teachers salary if he teaches vocational subjects only. State and Federal officials state the educational requirements of these teachers. Vocational Agriculture is very much like Home Economics in that it is supposed to be Dractical and meet the needs of the communityl The course of study here shouldlvary from that ina school in central Illinois. One requirement is we have 400 minutes class time per week, a portion of this is for supervised study and the remainder for discuss- ion. Another requirement is six months of supervised project work. This is how the boy is to get his start in farming. The reference mat- erial is books, bulletins, circulars, and other literature from agricultur- al colleges and the United States ,Department of Agriculture. FUTURE FARMERS of AMERICA This is a National Organizationzwhich started in 1928. Our chapter is a partof the Illinois Association of Future Farmers of America which is a part of the National Organization. We have various meetings, fairs, contests, etc. One example is the Sectional FFA Fair which allots about S1300 as prize money for projects of FFA, boys in about 22 schools in southern Illinois. Meetings include State and National Conventions held annually. FFA boys also have recreational meetingsf-the first one was the hay-ride last fall. Possibly there will be a summer trip of some sort.
