SPORTS BASEBALL On September 3, 1946 about 30 boys came out to try to make the baseball squad. After about one Week of practice uniforms were pass- ed out to fifteen boys. The team was changed slightly from last year's team as four valuable boys were lost through graduation. The fifteen boys Whose playing wondthe conference championship are listed below with their positions. Bill Schimpf, pitcher, Bob Knoke, catcher, james Tindall, first base, Charles Lindsey, second base, James Qualls, short- stop, Clarence Christensen, Captaintand third baseman, Bill Moore, left field, LaVerne Grace, Centerfield, Ralph Twenhafel, right field. The following six boys had uniforms but did not play regularly: Leonard Worthen, Roger Verseman, Don Snider, Jack Pittman, and Don Gale. For their first game OI the year the Mustangs defeated Ava, there, by a score of 5-l. For win number two the Mustangs trounced Grand Tower, there, by a score of 16-O. The third victory in a row came to thc Mustangs when they visited Vergennes and everged with a 10-2 decision. ln racking up win number four the Red and Gold shellacked Carbon- dale U. High by a score of 18-2. Gorham clicked off their fifth win of the year against Vergennes by a score of 13-1. The game was played on the Mustangs field. Win number six came to the Red and Gold when they downed their arch rival, Campbell Hill, by a score of 4-2. In annexing their seventh win of the year the Mustangs pounded Grand Tower 9-O. Bill Schimpf gave the outstanding individual perform- ance of the year as he pitched a no-nit no-run-game. Q Gorham won their eighth game of the season when they traveled tv Wolf Lake and snowed them under 14-2. The Mustangs continued their winningways when Campbell Hill came to Gorham and was defeated by a. 4-3 score. Gorham picked up another win when Wolf Lake came to town only to be defeated 10-5. The Mustangs closed their season with a 12-1 victory over Ava which gave them the conference championship. BY Bob Knoke
