DEDICIITIUII IN LOVING MEMORY OF OUR -SCI-IOOLMATE WANDA STERLING BOARD OF EDUCATION Mr. A. L. Roddick, Mr. Frank Cordd. Mr. Anker Fanoe, Mr. Cliliord Muclilruth, Mr. I.. W. Wiley. IIDIIIIIIISTRIITIDII The chief instrument of American democracy is the public school system, functioning as a training center for the national leaders of tomorrow. The Amer- ican citizen, a product of the public schools, has met well the crises of two world Wars and has avoided any national disaster through periods of depression and prosperity. Public education is now challenged with its task of training citizens capable of achieving World peace if this nation or any nation is to survive the atomic age. Education faces the ever-continuing task of bringing the American people closer to the full realization of the aims of our Democracy, a realization of the privilege of freedom of speech, freedom of press, and freedom to worship. Education accepts the challenge with confidence, as years of experience have proven that education is effective and can accomplish its purpose, if aims and objects are clearly defined and a definite goal is established. JUIIIUR CLIISS The beginning of the third Epic in the annals of the Class of '51 shows the luniors assuming the dignified role of upperclassmen and preparing for a busy, hardworking year. Under the leadership of the able officers- -Ophelia Gonzales, president: loy Gilchrist, vice-presi- denty Betty Lou Sale, secretaryy Virginia Simpson, treasurer: Marie filorentin, sergeant-at-arms, and lohnny Daoro, athletic manager, together with the wise counseling of their advisors, Mr. Hines and Miss Rodgers, the luniors embarked upon their new financial responsibility of raising money to properly entertain the noble Seniors and prepare for their own Senior Class expenses. Being a wide awake class, the lunior Class rings were selected and ordered soon after school opened, which resulted in their being deliv- ered in November right after Thanksgiving vacation with a long year to enjoy them. Financial enterprises carried out during the year were the selling of hot dogsy cokes and hot coffee at all the home football gamesy sale of cokes and candy at all basketball games. They also put on a movie, The Shocking Miss Pilgrim, which was enjoyed by the school and paid well. They also gave a dance following one of the basketball games. ln March the lunior Play was successfully presented and proved a financial success. The lunior Carnival in April further helped to swell the lunior fund. The lunior Class was proud to supply many good athletes on the football, basketball, track and baseball teams, with l4 boys earning their blocks this year. The Class is especially proud of lohn Daoro for making the all-C.C.A.L. Lightweight team. The luniors also showed an interest in music, having ll members in the Band, Chorus and Dance- band. One member was in the f-lonor Society. On May 3 the lunior Class entertained the Seniors and faculty with the long anticipated lunior-Senior banquet. This was an especially gala event this year held at Loma Linda. The Class of '5l is looking forward to being Seniors next year and hope to make it the most successful and worthwhile year of High School. Among them were a movie, cake sales and dances, one ot which -fthe Sox Hopfwas especially suc- cessful. Although the Freshman-Sophomore tie-up was won by the Freshman class the Sophomores put up a good tight. The party given forthe Freshmen was a very successful and enjoyable one and so was the Sophomore swimming party at Paraiso Springs. This past year the class has been represented in both Boys and Girls Block G by its members. The class of '52 would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to their understanding and helpful advisors, Mr. Bougher and Miss Vail. SAMUEL LLOYD ALFRED DePRATI VIRGINIA GRIFFIN President Vice-President Secretary Gonzales Chapter 226C of the California Scho- larship Federation, called more simply the Honor Society, showed a slight increase in membership this year. Upperclassmen appeared to have had difficulty in achieving grades suf- ficiently high to earn the ten qualifying units for membership, so Concepcion Valadez was the only one who represented the senior class, and Sam Lloyd was the only member of the junior class in the societyg the remaining membership coming from the sophomore and freshman classes. Our financial enterprises were cake sales and a dance to raise money for our annual banquet for new members. Cn May 6, five members, Concepcion Vala- dez, Sam Lloyd, Virginia Griffin, Lorraine Ca- prara and Vivian Irvine, accompanied by our advisor and good friend, Miss South, attended the annual C.S.F. conference which was held this year in the Sequoia High School in Redwood City. On the way home, Miss South provided a UCIETV special treat by showing the members all through the beautiful Stanford University campus. The chapters social events were the lovely banquet in Salinas in May for new members, and the annual Ditch Day picnic at Paraiso Hot Springs. This year only Connie Valadez will win the coveted Life Membership Lamp pin at gradua- tion, which required six semesters of member- ship in the chapter, one of which must be in the senior year. Connie has been a member all through high school. The officers of the chapter for this year wish to leave this word of encouragement to the classes following: although it may mean some sacrifice of fun and frolic, or mean study when one would like to play, perhaps the satisfaction of achievement, of a job well done, is worth every bit of effort put into earning membership in the Honor Society: and it is hoped more of the underclassmen will consider this and set Honor Society membership as their goal. The purpose of the Spartan Hi-Life is to keep the students informed of the school activities. It is comprised of features, sports, and new articles with per- sonals of high school life that take place at school or that concern the school. The Spartan Hi-Life editor, Connie Valadez, was selected for the year. Last year the paper was published weekly. Each month three issues were mimeoqraphed at school and a fourth was printed in Salinas. This year we were able to have our paper printed in Salinas, by the El Camino Press, every two weeks. One week we work on articles for the school paper, and the following week we study ways to improve our articles, learn new methods in writing ar- ticles, how to proofread, how to interview teachers or new students, etc. We wish to sincerely thank each and every one of our subscribers and ad- vertisers who have made our paper possible. We hope our subscribers have enjoyed reading the Spartan Hi-Life as much as we have enjoyed putting it out. One oi the main events was the Girls' League Conference, which was held in Watsoiiville dur- ing the month ol October. Many of the more interested girls attended, and all had a very en- joyable time. Dr. Evelyn Berger, a consulting psychologist from Oakland, was their main speaker. Her topic was Minor Cuts and Bruisesf' Other activities included a Halloween party and a Christmas party both held in the high school gym. A Mother-Daughter Banquet was given in March. All the girls worked very hard to make it the success it was. Their annual beach party was held at Pacific Grove on May 27. Candy and cake sales were staged quite ire- auently during the year, which helped to in- crease the income. All in all this has turned out to be a very successful year for the Girls' League organiza- tion. The activities of the club started with the Fresh- man-Sophomore tie-up, which is the Freshman initiation. This was followed later by a night dance. The boys sponsored a movie in the early fall. ln the first semester the new football lettermen were initiated in the gymnasium, and it proved to be very amusing. The basketball lettermen will be initiated with the track and baseball lettermen. At the end of the year, the annual boys' Block G barbecue was held. A unique set of ideas was used and the result was some- what as follows: The girls were dressed in their gym clothes with burlap sacks over them, a lemon on a string around each girl's neck, and to finish up the attire, old wornout hose were worn along with old slippers. ln case of rain the girls were made to carry umbrellas and their books in a bucket. At noon the initiates were put through various series of maneuvers. This organization had two noon dances. The schoolls first noon dance featured old faithful, the iuke box, as the source of music. The famous dance band played for the second dance. The annual ljrosh-Soph tie-up was again sponsorcd and supervised by the boys' and girls' Block G clubs. This feature proved to be one of the most memorable activities of this school year for many of the girls. The girls' Block G also united with the boys' Block G to sponsor and supervise the Invitational Track and Field Meet. The girls' division was won by Soledad. Under the able supervision ot Mr. Weigel, the band had another busy and successful year. Gonzales students are becoming more and more music conscious as is shown by increased in- terest in the band and other music departments. Since the Monterey County Fair was held be-V tor school opened the band did not take part this year. lts tirst parade was in Paso Robles tor Pioneer Day on October l2th. Here they were awarded their second trophy. The band did not march at the Salinas Valley Fair in King City this year because it was cancelled, but later took part in Memorial Day parades in Gonzales. ln tull uniform and led by its charming major- ettes, the band played and marched at all home football games this year and at two games away irom home, Hollister and Carmel, and did much to help out the rooting section. The band presented a program on April 26th lor Public Schools Week. This program was also given in King City as a school exchange pro- gram. The Second Annual C.C.A.L. Honor Band Con- cert, held in Santa Cruz on March l lth, was very successful and highly complimented. YELL LEADERS Bernadette Nunes, Gloria Tonini, Virginia Simpson VEll LEIIDERS llllll IIIHJORETTES Two of the most important groups of girls at our football games are the major- ettes and yell leaders. At the football games and at parades you could always see our five major- ettes leading the band. They were always there, although it was cold at times. Burrrrr! If you have ever watched them in action you would say that they made every effort to add spirit to the occasion. This is the last year for our senior majorettes Maryetta Lawson, Evelyn Cac- cia, and Margaret Tisdel. We regret that Rosemary Savino had to move away for when she did we lost a good majorette. To run for head yell leader a girl for boyl must have had a year's experience. Our yell leaders attended both of the cheerleaders' conferences in Salinas and Monterey. These conferences are held for the purpose of bringing the yell leaders together to discuss means of improving their rooting sections. Gloria Tonini deserves our hearty thanks for all the work she has done dur- ing her three years as head yell leader. We are especially proud of these two organizations and hope that they keep up the good work. MAIORETTES LEFT TO RIGHT: Veretta Bolin, Rose-Mary Savino. The next week the Spartans came back with a 7 to 6 loss from Pacific Grove and then lost to their King City rivals, 13 to 12, in a final night thriller. As the half ended the Spartans had King City on their own one-yard line. The Spartans will lose 12 senior lettermen. UIIRSITV BHSHETBHLL With most of last year's team graduating and only one returning letterman, Allan Wiley, the Varsity had a tough year slated against them. After an easy victory over the Alumni in their first game, the team had a run ot bad luck but finally steadied and ended the season tied with King City tor third place in the league, winning five games and losing tive games. Iohn Caraccioli was high-point man tor Gonzales and was second in the league. lim Caraccioli also made the AllfC.C.A.L. Varsity team. l-le was elected honorary captain of the Gonzales Varsity. Next year the team will have three returning lettermen, Henry Rianda, Bill Smith, and Milton Breschini, but with the help of Iohn Daoro, All-C.C.A.L. lightf weight, and a number ot lightweight lettermen that will join the Varsity, the team should have a more promising year. BHSEBIHL The Gonzales Spartans got off to a bad start by losing their first league game to Pacific Grove, 4 to 3. The next game showed a big difference when the Spartans trampled the Gilroy Mus- tangs, 5 to 2. Perez pitched a three-hit game and the team as a whole was playing wonderful ball. The upward trend kept climbing when the Spart- ans knocked off Hollister, 8 to 4. Then the big rival game came upv King City. This game, due to a lot of errors by the Spartan team, was lost 8 to lO. The next week, to the surprise of many, the Gonzales Spartans beat the favored Carmel Padres, 4 to 3. The Spartans got even with their first game by beating Pacific Grove, l5-2. ln this game Dick Gularte, Humberto Ramirez, Raymond Pura, Alvin Piffero, Abbie Hook, Gilbert Yniguez and lim Caraccioli got one hit apiece, while Billy Smith got two and Alfredo Dominguez got a double and two singles. The Spartans lost the next game to the favored Salinas Cowboys, 7-3, but since it was a practice game it didn't count against them. The Spartans rallied again with Gilroy, beating them 6-4. We lost the Salinas game, lU-4. The next game, which was an im- portant league game, was with Carmel, which we lost, l-l2. This game was lost by too many errors on the Gonzales team. The scorebook showed after the game that the Spartans made l7 errors, which contributed mostly to the loss. The mighty Spartans still have a chance for the championship and they still have a good chance of taking it or tieing with Carmel. These sports include basketball, track, volleyball, softball and tennis and are open to any boy in G.U.l-LS. who has not made a letter in the sports included under this program. The purpose of the program is to promote more interest in sports and develop all-around athletic sfill among those boys not already on teams. The basketball tournament opened the program with the Seniors taking top honors, followed by the luniors, then the Sophomores and the Freshmen trailing last. ln the track events, the Seniors again took first place in the heavyweight divi- sion, as they did last year, while this year's Freshman class took first in the lightweight division, as was also the case last year. At the time this article was written, volleyball had not been played, and the play-offs in softball and tennis are not completed, but so far the lunior class is leading in tennis and the Freshmen in softball. Last year the Senior class had its name engraved on the wall plague and Senior Bill Davis won the individual trophy on points, lt has been decided to eliminate the individual trophy award hereafter, as it aroused too great a per- sonal rivalry.
