To Fred A. Havel, Jr. The 1982-83 Lexington staff proudly dedicates this yearbook to Superintendent Fred A. Havel, Jr., whom we honor for his outstanding contributions to our schools and community. Before becoming GISD superintendent 19 years ago, Mr. Havel was a teacher for two years and a prin- cipal for nine. As superintendent, his goal was quality education for all students. Under his administration great im- provements were made in our educational system. These range from new physical facilities such as Gon- zales High School to new courses such as computer science. Few people realize the tremendous number of decisions that have to be made in administering a district, said GHS Principal Thomas E. Burrows. His dedication to the patrons of the district, to the students and teachers is without equal. To Jesse Smith, a GHS teachers since 1966, Mr. Havel ' s greatest achievement was his unique ability to relate school problems to the community, bringing about a very smooth relationship. Mr. Havel ' s fondest memories are his involvement with students and teachers and his part in the con- struction of the high school. For all of his efforts and accomplishments, we are gratefully dedicating this yearbook to Mr. Havel.

From Japan to Texas Takeshi Murakami, a 17-year-old exchange student from Tokyo, spent the 1982-83 school year with us at GHS. While in Gonzales, Takeshi lived with freshman Bubba McKnight and his family. His senior class schedule includ- ed American history, English, chemistry, calculus, and government. Takeshi, who experienced a few problems with American slang, went on to receive his diploma at graduation. As souvenirs of his stay in Gonzales, he also took home a senior class shirt and his P.E. shirt. Before returning to Japan, he had a chance to see more of America on a tour with the Exchange Students Organiza- tion. GHS will miss him. Good luck, Takeshi. Takeshi studies in calculus. Tal eshi demonstrates a math problem. Takeshi enters GHS.
