Havel, Jr. The 1982-83 Lexington staff proudly dedicates this yearbook to Superintendent Fred A. Havel, Jr., whom we honor for his outstanding contributions to our schools and community. Before becoming GISD superintendent 19 years ago, Mr. Havel was a teacher for two years and a prin- cipal for nine. As superintendent, his goal was quality education for all students. Under his administration great im- provements were made in our educational system. These range from new physical facilities such as Gon- zales High School to new courses such as computer science. Few people realize the tremendous number of decisions that have to be made in administering a district, said GHS Principal Thomas E. Burrows. His dedication to the patrons of the district, to the students and teachers is without equal. To Jesse Smith, a GHS teachers since 1966, Mr. Havel ' s greatest achievement was his unique ability to relate school problems to the community, bringing about a very smooth relationship. Mr. Havel ' s fondest memories are his involvement with students and teachers and his part in the con- struction of the high school. For all of his efforts and accomplishments, we are gratefully dedicating this yearbook to Mr. Havel. From Japan to Texas Takeshi Murakami, a 17-year-old exchange student from Tokyo, spent the 1982-83 school year with us at GHS. While in Gonzales, Takeshi lived with freshman Bubba McKnight and his family. His senior class schedule includ- ed American history, English, chemistry, calculus, and government. Takeshi, who experienced a few problems with American slang, went on to receive his diploma at graduation. As souvenirs of his stay in Gonzales, he also took home a senior class shirt and his P.E. shirt. Before returning to Japan, he had a chance to see more of America on a tour with the Exchange Students Organiza- tion. GHS will miss him. Good luck, Takeshi. Takeshi studies in calculus. Tal eshi demonstrates a math problem. Takeshi enters GHS. s z s aSP Rockin ' the Square One of the best of times was the 1982 Come and Take It celebration in downtown Gonzales. Student par- ticipation helped to make a success of the three-day event that commermorates the firing by cannon of the first shot of the War for Texas Independence. Friday ' s opening focused on food booths and a street dance. Several booths were operated by GHS organizations as fund-raising projects. Saturday ' s schedule was highlighted by the annual parade. GHS ' s homecoming float won first prize and the Thespian float won second prize in their division. Also attracting the attention of students were such events as the Lions Club Rodeo, the Young Farmers ' Tractor Pull, and the Chicken Flying Contest. Sunday ' s Family Day brought another day of fun and games. Those were days to remember. GHS students watch the games. Karen Nowotny shows how high she can kick. Tonya seems tired. This year ' s Lexington staff consisted of a group of very hard working and dedicated students. They are the section editors and their staffs who spent many hours working very hard to meet their deadlines on time. So when the last layout was completed, they could all say, I did it! with a feeling of pride and accomplishment. Few students get the chance to feel the satisfaction of completing a book as they have. Polly Technik Editor: Polly Technik First Row: Darlene Cerda, Mark Barnett. All the stories are written by the students and the page layout is the respon- sibility of the co-editors, Susan Kuck and Judy Wright. The photographs are produced in coopera- tion with the Lexington photographers. With the cooperation of the students, faculty, and the local newspaper, the Update has been very progressive. Uarslty Cheerleaders This year, as head cheerleader, has been absolutely great. I really enjoyed working with the girls, and I think they enjoyed it too. The line, this year, worked better together than any line of cheerleaders I have ever been on. Being head cheerleader has been a great honor, and will be a memory of high school I will always cherish. come for my final thanl s and good-byes. I want to thanl all the people who made the completing of this book such a memorable experience. First, I would like to thank Mr. Burrows, Mr. Glass, and specifically Mrs. Glass, who always seemed willing to help and to give advice when it was needed. Next, I wish to thank Mr. Heaberlin, our advisor, for his leadership. Finally, I would like to thank all of the teachers for their cooperation, and the entire student body for their patience during all the numerous club pictures and retakes. My staff deserves recognition and thanks for their long hours of work in getting their sections com- pleted by their deadline. My associate editor was Mark Barnett, who exhibited tireless efforts of work, and Melanie McDaniel contributed many ideas in planning the book. Jessica Malatek provided continuous help and support throughout the year. Darlene Cerda and the photographers did such an outstanding job with the pictures, par- ticularly during the rush before deadlines. Without the support and understanding from my family and friends when I needed it the most, this yearbook would have not been possible. Good-bye is such a hard word to say, especially to a way of life and to friends I have known for twelve years. Soon, we will be graduating and moving to a new phase of our lives, but we shall never forget all the good times we have shared together through the years. Someday, we will find that these are the best of times . . . Polly Technik Volume 53 Gonzales High School Gonzales, Texas 78629 Phrases for division pages taken from song The Best of Times by Styx.
