Text from Pages 1 - 240 of the 1981 volume:

Dedication The editors and staff take great pride in dedicating the 1981 Lexington to a master teacher, civic leader, and a dear friend, Jesse A. Smith. Pix I.D. Opposite page: Everyone of us know of the little someone closest to his heart, his granddaughter, Casan- dra. We have also heard about his friendly turtle who has visited him each year for 15 years. Top: This is a picture from his earliest years of teaching. The most common site of Mr. Smith is in the midst of his students. Jesse Smith is one of the greatest men we shall ever know. We have felt his greatness in his love for us and we have seen it demon- strated in his love of Sod, his fellow man and his Country. As a master teacher, Mr. Smith has made every day a day of learning with an empha- sis on individual discovery. Without leaving the classroom he has woven the chemistry and physics of our very existence into the tapestry of our lives. He always has a warm greeting for us, and an optimistic forecast on the day. His educational degrees and certificates fill the pages of more than one book. His credentials were awarded at colleges and universities from coast to coast. Educators from all across the South have sought his counsel and many have tried to entice him to their districts. Possibly no other man in our community has been as lauded as Jesse Smith. Every major organization in Gonzales has been touched by his intellect and interest. What more can one be to a community than Man of the Year. He is head of the Science Department and holds, among others, the distinction of holding a perfect attendance record in the Gonzales Independent School District of 3! years. We want him to know that he is held in the greatest esteem with the deepest affec- tion. The magnificent play, Camelot, closes with Arthur saying . . . we are less than a drop in the great blue motion of the sunlit sea. But some of the drops do sparkle, they really do sparkle. Jesse Smith does sparkle and did, indeed, add that special sparkle to our sunlit years . . . sparkle that will never dim. Six-hundred and ninety-seven students spent this free time doing many different activities. But no matter what kind of activity they engage in they always seem to find time to eat. The options the students have include the choices of eating at home and watching the ever popular noontime soap opera, All My Children, grabbing a quick bite to eat at the many fast food places, going to Toni ' s for some scrumptuous bar-b-que, or feasting at the popular snack bar right here at G.H.S. Some prefer the 3-course meals over the 2-course meals. Others would rather soak up the noontime sun. These students can be found pitching washers, playing football, visiting on the benches or sitting out in the parking lot. We now face the beginning of another. We can now say that GHS has been the most important phase we will ever experience. We anticipated the beginning of the year to finally be considered SENIORS, and pre pared diligently for the future. Now it has come. What do we do? Where do we go? DECISIONS. DECI- SIONS, DECISIONS. Yes, numerous seniors remain undecisive as to where the future will take them. As the year has passed, we as SENIORS have filled the WELL with many memorable events. We began the preparatory phase of our year with PRACTICE, PRAC- TICE, PRACTICE!!! (For as you know, practice makes perfect!!!) We as SENIORS were involved in various activities . . . Some included: football, basketball, band, rifles, flags, drill team, and other organizations. TOSETHER-ness was definitely a part of the CLASS OF ' 81. We truly partied, but we always managed to get our work done . . . The Halloween Party was a BLAST . . . This ghostly affair included the HULK, A PLAYBOY BUNNY, AND ESPECIALLY THE BIG BUTT FAMILY . . . We also held a car wash to raise funds. Air horns, screams, bluejeans, T-Shirts, overalls, and bal- loons were all a part of Friday football action. The pep rallies were always the scene of many diversified activi- ties ... The familiar phrase THERE WILL BE A RUNOFF BETWEEN . . . was a regular routine of class meetings. We will cherish these memories forever. We have reached the peak of our heights within the halls of GHS . . . YOU DON ' T MISS THE WATER, ' TIL THE WELL RUNS DRY truly exemplifies the true feelings of we as SENIORS, for we truly will miss GHS . . . She ended the season with 2272 points, and the recognition of the all time leading scorer at GHS. The 1980-1981 basketball season was a great one for the Apachettes and Linda Muelker. First, Linda, the Apachette scoring machine, ended her high school career as the all time leading scorer with 2272 points. Second, she helped lead the Apachettes to a goal which was to win the 1 3AAAA district championship, a first in SHS history. This year the Apachettes had the longest winning streak of fifteen games since the program was started in 1977-1978 and completed an outstanding season with 25-4. The Apachettes consisted of ten girls who brought pride and honor, not only to themselves, but to their school, student body, faculty, and commu- nity. The Apachettes would like to thank Mrs. Patsy Davis and Coach Jerry Bivins for their time and patience in helping the team. Mrs. Davis has been with us through thick and thin, and it will be hard to tell her good-bye. We wish her the best of luck, and memories of her will be with us forever. It begins with sunshine and happiness and ends with a captivating sunset with untold memories of all shades. So much happens within a school year, that it is very difficult to capture it all, but as editors of the ' 8 1 Lexington we feel we have gathered the high- lights of the 1 980-8 1 school year and compiled them in this memorable book. But the credit alone does not go to us. There are so many people who took time out to help make this book possible. Our first thanks goes to Mr. Burrows and Mr. Glass for their support and guidance. They them- selves know just how special they really are to us. We also would like to thank our teachers, employers, and families for coping with us through deadlines, balloon sales, and our own everyday ups and downs. A special thanks goes to the handful of staff members who really devoted their time on this book. There ' s no way we can ever begin to personally thank them. A few other very important assets to the Lexington that we would like to thank are the photographers. An annual without pic- tures is like a day without sunshine. Last but not least, a very special thanks goes to our Aunt Jean. At times we were like a collapsing frame and she was our pillar support- ing us and giving us strength at all times. She ' s a very spe- cial lady and we love her very much. We ' ve been like one big family sharing each other ' s hopes and dreams. Now we must break away from each other, walking into our own sunrises and begin living these hopes and dreams.
