Not merely a teacher and a coach but a companion to his disciples both in school and on the field. This dedication could only be to one man, an outstanding figure in G.H.S., Mr. William Ward. 7 Each moment is a souvenir to be recreated by the mind - reflections of time in a looking glass. Gilt-edged fond memories of this time remind us when we were reaching, yet refusing to relinquish our age-old grasp on childish youth. These are the teenage years. In hazy reminiscences of joyful and bittersweet months, this book is left behind to perhaps relive a few of these moments for you - an everlasting diary - a souvenir. The Oracle Staff of 1976 leaves this yearbook to the class of that year, in hopes as the days pass on we have created for each one the promise of the recovery of youths' dreams and the final trophy of the GHS halls. Our desire is to make this final contribution the most precious of all your souvenirs. 9 13 14 Gary Abrams John Adams Founding Fathers Club 2,3, Sec. 4: Con- tinental Congress Comm. 3,4: Continen- tal Board of War and Ordinance Comm. Midst green hills and meadows, Through sunlight and shadows, The High School stands, to which we all are true: A grand, stately building, With broad lawns surrounding, And over all the vault of Heaven's blue. Chorus: Dear old Gloversville! Pride of her many valiant sons and daughters! When out on life's ocean, With hearts of devotion, We'll think of thee, and our vict'ries won. For years we labor, In which we endeavor The honor of our school to e'er uphold. In football or track-work. In study or class-work. The thought of her doth ever make us bold. But when all's completed, And glad years have fleeted Then we from Alma Mater dear must part; But far though we wander, And much though we ponder, Her teachings must remain in every heart. Few months later I'll leave here with all my memories of Gloversville. my family and you, all the memories that I'll never forget. It is hard for us, all the Foreign Exchange Students to go to another country, not really hard but strange to know all the people with different customs and different ways of life and ideas. As one of them I was so anxious when 1 came here, but I met my real friendly family, your beautiful city, people who live here and also you, with all your kindness. I hope 1 can come back sometime and meet my family, you and your beautiful city again, but if I can’t this would be a small and last memory for both of us. As I'll never forget you. With love, Mahasii Pourdastan (Iran) 148 It's a great experience to spend a year abroad, especially when you have a chance to come to such a nice little city as Gloversville where all of you have been friendly and very nice to me. I'm enjoying very much attending Gloversville High School, I find I've improved in the language quite a bit since 1 got here. Also I'm having a lot of fun with the friends I’ve made. Finally, I'd like to say thank you to each one of you that have contributed to make this year one of the greatest things that has ever happened to me. Giovanna Mahasti Pourdastan from Iran A-P.C. R f i«seK£afeo«s AhwxA Lynn Bachner to Japan Going to another land and sharing another culture with your own - sharing yourself. That's AFS abroad. It's everything - excitement, loneliness, boredom, happiness. There's learning and growing both inside and out for everyone. My unknown held Japanese tea ceremonies, school uniforms, strange sounds, using wrong lavatories, communal baths, kimonos, festivals, and so much more. It’s friendship, good times, bad times, but most important of all - love - that's what it's all about. Kathy Martin to Holland All the people I met during the year gave me new and different ideas to think about, not only academic ideas but values which I will be using for my entire life. It was the various people that I met that made my AFS experience worthwhile. It was my family that was always in the foreground, telling, describing, helping, and guiding me into their unity. During the year, I learned more about myself and other people than ever before and most of this was accomplished simply through living with my family. Mama, Papa, my six sisters, three brothers gave me a scrapbook and a tape recording with a message from each family member as my last memories of a very enlighting year in the Netherlands. But I will never forget all the other memories of my year beginning with the day I left Gloversville. I will definitely return because I am a member of their family now and I couldn't stay away too long from these people who mean so much to me. 149 Qtu Ifint CouaCifi- KNEELING, L-R: T. Eagan, L. Scitamard, or dramatics spelled backwards, is an organization dedicated to the teachings of all aspects of the theatre. One of the busiest groups, their production of the spring play, Hello Dolly” was, as usual, great. They also put together two other dramas, Our Town and Never Too Late. The 1976 spring production of Fiddler on the Roof was a GHS first in a musical, utilizing both faculty and student talent. Bravo to our thespians! 164 OK, Who took the aspirin? HMMM ... Woodworth - Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Dear Seniors, You have the unique privilege of graduating in the 200th year of our Nation’s existence. You are the Bicentennial Class of Gloversville High School. As such, I trust that you will be particularly conscious of a fundamental truth that has made our Nation great. Men have exercised freedom with responsibility. From time to time the concept of freedom has been misunderstood, abused, or exercised in destructive ways rather than responsible ways. Fortunately, our Nation has survived these periods. As high school graduates entering the adult society, you are charged with the responsibility of helping to perpetuate a strong and free nation. I suggest that this can best be done in the same manner as it has for the past two hundred years - by individually and collectively exercising freedom with responsibility.' ’ Sincerely, A. Now let us look at our own personal trunk of souvenirs. A pair of baby shoes, a first report card, a school letter and a class ring might be fairly universal keepsakes. As you add to your collection, my wish for you is that you will enrich not only your lives but the lives of those around you; that when you take stock some years hence, You will find your trunk full of things that represent doing, giving, contributing - not simply being. Yes, George Washington slept here, but he did much, much, more.
