The chance combination of a few features — eyes, nose, mouth — that is what a face simply means. A universal possession of all the world's people, a common expression of their humanity, and yet for each one, it is the most individual sign of their personal uniqueness. But more than mere identification, the human face symbolizes our prime idea of beauty, silently conveys meaning without words, mirrors all our inner thoughts and feelings. The wizened face of an old man, wrinkled by time . . . the triumphant face of the athlete in victory . . . the closed, noncommital faces of strangers hurrying by — such as these form certain distinctive images in our minds. Then how much stronger and more precious are the impressions made by familiar faces, the people, perhaps taken for granted, that we pass daily in the halls? The face is familiar, we often say, but I just can't remember. . . Long after we have forgotten the names and dates and other details of our years at Gloversville High School, the memory of its faces will remain. For that reason, the staff of the 1974 Oracle has devoted this yearbook to the faces of G.H.S. Of all the branches of political economy, the human face is perhaps the best criterion of value.
