She spans the centuries with a libation of laughter, balancing the concerns of both two millennia and two minutes ago with the same equanimity. A singular nature is reflected in her classroom: a forum where ideas are exchanged and where the classic tradition of a dead language is unconventionally livened. But her sense of humor, her candor, of commitment as a teacher extend far beyond the classroom to those who know her as a friend. Amidst the crowd of teachers who have entered our lives at GHS, there is one whose face and whose spirit will undoubtedly remain with us, and to her — Mary Lewis — we dedicate the Oracle of 1974. 5 Faces Of. . . Knowledge Table Of Involvement Contents Friends FAC EG The chance combination of a few features — eyes, nose, mouth — that is what a face simply means. A universal possession of all the world's people, a common expression of their humanity, and yet for each one, it is the most individual sign of their personal uniqueness. But more than mere identification, the human face symbolizes our prime idea of beauty, silently conveys meaning without words, mirrors all our inner thoughts and feelings. The wizened face of an old man, wrinkled by time . . . the triumphant face of the athlete in victory . . . the closed, noncommital faces of strangers hurrying by — such as these form certain distinctive images in our minds. Then how much stronger and more precious are the impressions made by familiar faces, the people, perhaps taken for granted, that we pass daily in the halls? The face is familiar, we often say, but I just can't remember. . . Long after we have forgotten the names and dates and other details of our years at Gloversville High School, the memory of its faces will remain. For that reason, the staff of the 1974 Oracle has devoted this yearbook to the faces of G.H.S. Of all the branches of political economy, the human face is perhaps the best criterion of value. William Hazlitt GHS, A Gallery Of Faces 10 12 n Principal's Message Graduating is harvesting the fruits of hard work and a tasting of achievement. It is a time for pride; but it is also a time to look forward. Your education will continue in the years ahead — whether on a campus, in a job, in the home or wherever. I encourage you to use your opportunities to the full, living to help others and to better yourselves and wringing every drop of learning out of life's adventure. It will be exciting to see what you will make of it — and of yourselves. Left — Kenneth Richards Principal Right — James Riter Vice-Principal 14 u p e r 0 I n t e n e n t s e s s a Dr. A. Glen Everhart Superintendent of Schools Congratulations on the completion of your high school program. You are approaching adulthood at a critical period in the history of the world. Your generation will surely witness unprecedented prosperity in the world to come, yet it will also witness unparalleled food and material shortages and great proverty in many parts of the world. Your generation will be part of the greatest technological expansion the world has ever known, yet it will also be plagued with energy crises, fuel depletions, and a host of complex social problems which will accompany this technological age. As the late United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Adlai Stevenson, put it, your opportunities will come to you brilliantly disguised as insurmountable problems. It will be up to you to recognize the opportunities and to seek solutions to these problems. May these words uttered by Theodore Roosevelt over half a century ago be an inspiration and a challenge to you as you enter the exciting world of adult life. . . . “Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.” 15 F A C E 8 O F T O D A Y 16 Senior Class Officers KATHRINEM. The 1973 GHS baseball team made a little bit of history as they won the very first Foothills Council Baseball Title. Winning every game except three, including a 10-3 victory over Johnstown, the Huskies went on to the sectionals where they beat Columbia and lost to Shenendehowa by one run. With the 9-2 pitching of Tom Nigro and the slugging of Sherm Bowman who hit safely in nineteen games. Coach Smalling has quite a bit to look forward to this spring. Senior Albert Parillo and underclassmen Nigro, Bowman, John Budinscak, and catcher Lowell Eutermarks all garnered all-council honors for the Huskies. 179 One Last Look At The Varsity 180 Jay-vees And Freshmen Show Promise Top — JV Baseball — First Row From Left: J. Although lacking the overall depth necessary to add up enough points to win more than three meets the 1 973 track team produced some outstanding individuals. Senior Jim Cromer set school records in the broad, triple, and high jump event. Mark White, another senior, kept setting the school pole vaulting record and breaking it. Noel Wing, a hurdler, and high jumper Rick VanAlstine, both juniors, did well in the sectionals. Last spring also saw the first ladies to don GHS track uniforms join the team. This included Sue VanSkiver, Mary DeSantis, Yvonne Brown, Stacey Daum, and Ruth Tokarowski. With so much interest developing in track and field here at GHS as evidenced by the winter track program, the 1974 track team, led by co-captains Bill Lomanto and Noel Wing, should be much stronger. 182 Varsity Tennis Team Serves Notice From Loft: P. Although beating Saratoga twice, the Varsity Tennis Team lost matches to Cobleskill, Johnstown, and South Glens Falls twice, Glens Falls, Linton of Schenectady, and a couple of others last spring. But no matter. With a lot of new talent and the return of “Volleying Vic Topo, “Slamming Dave Schatz, and Dancing Dan Finkle, '74 will definitely be a better year. John Bennice, Tim Eagan, Steve Ferraro, Frank Clemente, and Tom Moses all did a nice job. The team won matches with Glens Falls, South Glens Falls, Bishop Burke, and Herkimer, as well as the two with Johnstown. 185 Huskies Capture Foothills Council Crown 186 First Row From Left: L. The 1973 Huskies brought another football championship to the city of Gloversville shutting out an excellent Glens Falls team 23-0 to take the Foothills Council Title. But this year's team seemed to have the purple ''blues losing four of their games to highly ranked teams in purple, including the televised Johnstown game. The Huskies 5-4 record was a great disappointment but the team's true caliber was recognized at the season's end when seven of its members were voted first team all-council honors. They were seniors Mark Martin at offensive guard and linebacker, Tom Nigro at quarterback, Jim Robinson at center, Armand Lauria at offensive guard, Bill Lomanto at offensive tackle, Rick Mathias at halfback, and junior Bill Wood at defensive tackle. Led by senior co- captains Chip Esper and Kevin Sparks, most of the losses were close ones that could have gone either way. The win and tie both came at the expense of council opponent Saratoga. With a good strong group of experienced underclassmen returning — including all-leaguer Bill Taub, next year has got to be better. Yet the loss of seniors Esper, Sparks, Frank Vertucci, Anthony Giardino, Doug Melita, and Oscar Irving Foss will be sorely felt. 194 ■ Soccer Shots Varsity Corner Kicks 197 Junior Varsity Soccer First Row From Left: P. The team also beat Mayfield earlier in the season. The dedication this very young team puts into its running should pay off in later years. With runners such as Tim Szumowski, Dave Hynd, Lori Boles, and Aaron Miller all returning. Coach Metallo has quite a bit to look forward to in the next couple of years. Ben'ai? Thanks to the first winter track team ever to be organized here at Gloversville High School, this spring should witness one of the strongest track teams to ever come out of Gloversville. Interest and more important, dedication, have been very high. Yes, these are the nuts that take over the halls after school. Running all of their meets at the Washington Avenue Armory in Albany against schools from all over the Capital District, the team won distinctive “Division 11“ honors. Consistent first place performances were turned in by Bill Lomanto in the shot, Rick VanAlstine in the jumping events, and hurdler Noel Wing. Strong performances were also turned in by Paul Tokarowski, Paul Joseph, John Budinscak, and Dave Hynd among others. The Gloversville High School keglers rolled to another championship, winning the Foothills Council with a 29-19 won-loss record. The race for the title went right down to the wire. Needing a victory against Hudson Falls and for league-leading Saratoga to lose a match with Glens Falls, Coach Vidulich found out by telephone that Saratoga was losing three games to none. As things turned out, the Blue Streaks lost all four games and G.H.S. won the title sporting a 195 team average. John Stewart bowled a school record 703 triple during the season while maintaining a 200 average. Other top bowlers were Jake Spraker — 184.17, Marshall Eckelman — 183.4, John Baker — 1 79.27, Rob Mosconi — 177.16, and Marvin Meher with a 1 73.15 average. Meher also rolled a 685 triple during the season. John Baker is going to State Junior competition. Other top bowlers were Gerry Krizan, Pat Colabello, and Kevin Sparks. The team was 56-20 overall for the season including victories over Johnstown, Amsterdam, and Bishop Burke. , The girls team had a very impressive season. Going 16-0 against boys JV competition, the girls proved their skill at the game to be equal to that of the men. Lori Matura has developed into one of the finest female bowlers in the state. Lori and Marie Stofelano are both going on to State Junior competition. Others deserving special mention are Lori Visconti, Nancy Weiner, and Petie Guter. The loss of seniors Jack Mahoney, Tom Nigro, and Sherm Bowman — tri-captains, Vic Topo, Tim Eagan, Rick VanAlstine and Jim Lauria, will be sorely felt. But with Bill Taub, Kris Kane, Steve Jennings, Mike Crump, Brian Hall, and freshman sensation Mike Bruce all returning, next year doesn't look too bad. But many fine individual records were achieved and the team itself managed to place ninth in the Section 2 Class A wrestling tournament which was held here at the high school. Captain Gary DiMaio compiled an impressive 16-4 regular season record but was forced to bow out of the sectionals because of illness. Steve Graham went 14-6 during the season and placed third in the sectionals. Tim Manchester, who went 1 3-6-1 during the season, took top honors in the sectionals, placing second in the 98-pound class. Bill Guy placed sixth in the sectionals after an 11-9 regular season and Mike Leach went 9-8 for the team. Other good grapplers were Rich Walrath and Jim Ellis. Wrestling Cheerleaders U.
