Page 15 text:

Superintendent’s Message Education is the instruction of intellect in the laws of nature, under which I include not merely things and their forces, but men and their ways; and the following of the affections and of the will into an earnest and loving desire to move in harmony with those laws.” . . . T. H. Huxley: Science and Education IV Dr. John E. Mathews Those responsible for today’s educa- tion and its curriculum are becoming in- creasingly aware that educational institu- tions must expand their function and scope if they are to continue to serve the society in which they exist. There is an urgent demand that students be taught more about man himself, in addition to the ever expanding body of knowledge about things. The turbulent sixties have dictated that graduates of our high schools must better understand that the people in our society and our world pos- sess more similarities than they possess differences. If we are ever to find the good life, which we all seek, we must be taught and we must learn that this goal can be achieved only through coopera- tion and harmony. Although competi- tion among individuals will no doubt continue as part of our pattern of life, we should bear in mind that the broader and perhaps more important goals can only be reached by a togetherness in effort. May the Class of 1971 of Gloversville High School bear the bright candle of united effort and harmony as they depart to travel on the many and the diverse walkways of life. . . . Dr. John E. Mathews Superintendent of Schools 11
