Text from Pages 1 - 232 of the 1971 volume:

1871 The way it was yesterday In 1871 the Academic Department under George R. Donnan was set up. This establishment had one teacher and less than a dozen pupils. This de- partment later became what is now known as Gloversville High School. 1971 The way it is today . . . when the 1971 Oracle Staff presents The 1971 Oracle Gloversville High School Gloversville, New York Dedication Among the individuals in a school system’s faculty, many different types of personalities are found. These diversified character types make school an inter- esting experience. If every teacher possessed the exact same personality and con- ducted a class in the same manner as every other teacher, school life would cer- tainly be dull and tedious. Within Gloversville High School’s teaching staff, there is a teacher whom we especially admire because of his great character and special” ability to educate his students. This teacher possesses a magnetic personality which automatically brings the students within a classroom together. His friendliness, sincerity, and gentle manner instantly attract people. He creates a warm, relaxed atmosphere where individuals have a chance to work together harmoniously. Therefore, in tribute and in recognition, the Class of 1971 dedicates their Oracle to Mr. Anthony Corsini. A typical American Studies class where the individual has a chance to work with others, and at the same time retain his own personal identity. Say guys!” Foreword Throughout history, harmony and mutual coopera- tion among the individuals of a society have been two important elements. In order for a society to progress, the people must work together and resolve their dif- ferences. They have to be willing to work as a group to achieve their common goals. There are many different phases of life where the individuals are obligated to work together in harmony with their peers. The citizens of a nation are called upon to cooperate with their established government. The members of organizations, councils, cabinets, clubs, and other established groups should make an effort to cooperate with each other. In our system of education we find individuals who are working together in harmony. This harmonious cooperation among the members of a school system, as in any system, is most essential for progress and the attainment of our goals. As individuals we seek an education to enrich our minds, to develop socially and to acquire the necessary knowledge to guide us in today’s changing world. We editors of the 1971 Oracle sincerely hope that future generations will continue to work together peacefully. Principal’s Message To the Class of 1971: Graduation Day will mean many different things to each of you. As an individual you have become a potential maker of history, a worker for truths, an architect of nations; but, the real progress you will make is bound cohesively with the lives of your contemporaries. As a member of a group you must not forget your own capabilities, your own assets, your goals; you must strive to become indispensa- ble to the group. I am confident that you will seek out your, goals and assume responsibilities unique to the human being you are and will become. . . . Kenneth L. Richards Principal Our Principal Mr. K. Richards Mr. Richards Mr. T. Morgan Vice-Principal Superintendent’s Message Education is the instruction of intellect in the laws of nature, under which I include not merely things and their forces, but men and their ways; and the following of the affections and of the will into an earnest and loving desire to move in harmony with those laws.” . . . T. H. Huxley: Science and Education IV Dr. John E. Mathews Those responsible for today’s educa- tion and its curriculum are becoming in- creasingly aware that educational institu- tions must expand their function and scope if they are to continue to serve the society in which they exist. There is an urgent demand that students be taught more about man himself, in addition to the ever expanding body of knowledge about things. The turbulent sixties have dictated that graduates of our high schools must better understand that the people in our society and our world pos- sess more similarities than they possess differences. If we are ever to find the good life, which we all seek, we must be taught and we must learn that this goal can be achieved only through coopera- tion and harmony. Although competi- tion among individuals will no doubt continue as part of our pattern of life, we should bear in mind that the broader and perhaps more important goals can only be reached by a togetherness in effort. May the Class of 1971 of Gloversville High School bear the bright candle of united effort and harmony as they depart to travel on the many and the diverse walkways of life. . . . Dr. John E. Designing and making a dress Building a stock car 104 Writing a short story Independent Study is a unique learning community at Gloversville High School. Individual members of the teaching staff — teachers, librarians, guidance counselors, and principals — study hand in hand with the individual students on a one-to-one basis. The area of each study-project is de- termined by each student himself; he is given the opportunity to do his own thing” with the interested support and as- sistance of an adult mentor. In this kind of learning situation, students have learned as much about themselves and about human interaction as they have about their thing.” Projects this year, in addition to those pictured here, have included; 1. An original painting based on a study of French impressionistic painters. 2. The building of a flugle bugle 3. Recording an album of original songs 4.
