Autographs The 1969 Oracle Presented by Contents Faculty, Curriculum, and Honors 95 Organizations m3 Sports 195 Advertisements Dedication Teaching, perhaps more than any other profession, is demanding—in patience, understanding, and knowledge—for teachers are often called upon to aid a student toward emotional as well as intellectual growth. One can never underestimate the powers of a teacher, for there must always be hidden wells of reserve strength and humour in each. This year, however, we feel that there are two teachers who deserve special re- cognition for their great contributions and service to G.H.S. and its students, both past and present. Their enthusiasm for their subjects, warm personalities, and ready interest in pupils have given a vibrancy to their classes. We have indeed been fortunate in having these two teachers a part of our lives. In expression of our esteem and appreciation, we, the class of 1969, dedicate this book to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lucas. 6 Character i '“imccinttf- ▼ X ♦ • 1 A One in Common Foreword Emotions have always played an important role in high school life; G.H.S. is no exception. The consternation of students during a test, the heady elation of victory or the despair in defeat at a foot- ball game, the sudden interest rippling through a class caused by some subject or discussion—all are reflected in the faces of students. Our emotions reflect facets of the life at G.H.S. Hence, while trying to give a full representation of this ever- active life, we have also tried to embody in pictures the different kinds of emotions that are always surging through the school body. At G.H.S. individuals are emerging, each one uniquely different. Each one experiences emo- tions that are for him, uniquely his own. Yet, emo- tions are reflected in crowds as well as in the individual. No emotion is completely one’s own, for all men experience the same feelings at one time or another. We, the editors of the 1969 Oracle, have emphasized the importance of emo- tions in high school life because we feel that these common emotions are one strong link with our fellows and the world that surrounds the high school. Mr. Plouffe Our New Vice Principal’s Message As you leaf through these pages in the future, please be reminded of the importance of the education- al process. Make education a life- long process. Take a vow to make possible more and better educa- tional opportunities for all of us. Alberi G. Plouffe Principal Mr. Morgan As a guidance counselor, Mr. Morgan was a well-known per- sonage at G. H. S. Now we are pleased to welcome him as our new vice principal. 10 Superintendent’s Message Dr. Mathews True education doesn’t stop upon a student’s receiving a diploma. It has been a process of acquiring the tools for use in continual and subsequent learning and problem solving. Every age of the world has had difficulties and issues that had to be faced. This year is not too different from those that preceded it or those that will follow it. As graduates of 1969, you will be called upon to confront more than the usual frus- trations, personal problems, community and national anxieties, man’s eternal search for truth, and the quest for individual success However, your exposure to the era in which you live and the sophistication of educational change during the past decade has given you infinitely more knowledge, greater emotional stability, a higher degree of poise, an empathy for the feelings of others, and a devout seriousness of purpose to meet these confrontations. The world needs your concern and interest. Our problems are multiplying geo- metrically. We look forward with anticipation to your high enthusiasm and desire for involvement. The stage is set; we await your entrance. GEORGE E. GREENE Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education LEWIS 0. THEURER Assistant Superintendent of Business 12 FRANK C. Dave Gisondi exercises an official duty at the Johnstown game pep rally. The Student Council of 1969 has tried to represent all GHS students by listening to their suggestions and attempting to do something about them. Often council members work very hard on a certain committee and for various reasons the plan may never come about, but the students will only find out about programs or activities that are successful. For the first time this year the council was able to get a bonfire approved. Another new policy this year is having a gripe box for students who have legitimate complaints. The gripes are dis- cussed at council meetings and are answered on the intercom in the morning. The S.C. again sponsored Hush Day, which made it pos- sib'e to donate S50 to Palsy, and the Winter Carnival. Certainly there must be items that students may have wished to change or intro- duce that did not come about, but then the Student Council cannot satisfy everyone—it only tries. 133 The Winter Carnival and the Bonfire Jerry handles his strenuous task with ease. 135 The sophomore class goes Republican. ITiroughout the school year, they perform various projects and have always raised the necessary funds. In the summer of 1968, Laura Knowles went to Australia through this program and attended school there. Also, we received as our foreign exchange student Kathie McKittrick from Belfast, N. Ireland. She is staying at the home of Mary Genatiempo. her American “sister.” We all hope Kathie likes GHS and Gloversville as much as we enjoy having her here. 138 Laura has many great memories of Australia that she’ll never forget. 139 «oit i; M J Rizzio, P. The Key Club at CHS is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club and belongs to the Key Club International. Any boy in the high school may become a member but he should have the desire to serve our school and our com- munity because the club exists on that basic foundation. The Key Club serves the school in that its members publish and sell football and basket- ball programs at the games. This year the club sponsored an assembly in which a “Project Hope” film was shown. The boy collected funds to give to this international hospital ship. You better give to Project Hope or else. Let’s see. National Honor Society The members of the National Hon- or Society should be proud of their accomplishments. These seniors were chosen for this club on the basis of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. In order for a person to qualify for membership in the or- ganization he must obtain an average of 3.5 or better. The purpose of the National Honor Society is “To create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stim- ulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership and to en- courage the development of character in students.” Top °f stairs to bottom: B. Pep Club The Pep Club was formed in the end of the 1968 school year by the Student Council. Its aim is to pro- mote school spirit at CHS for all sports activities. It is often a very difficult job to incite school spirit but the enthusiastic Pep Club members try their best by making posters and setting an example themselves. Pep Club members carry the symbolic torch of victory for the football team ... and arouse support for our basketball team. 151 C. Mosher, D. Sawyer, M. Peters, S. Stoddard, J. Holmes, M. Franco, T. The Husky Growl Our school newspaper, the Husky Growl, is published five times a year as a result of the editor’s and staffs diligent efforts. The Growl includes articles covering club activities, sports, and any important happenings that may occur at GHS. This year the Husky Growl has encouraged students to voice their opinion by initiating a Presidential poll, incorporating a “student’s speak out” column, and still including editorials. Once the Husky Growl’s price was raised to 35 cents, and the money earned from the extra ten cents was sent to Biafra. At all times our newspaper is representative of the students—the people for whom the paper exists. 163 DECA The Distributive Education Clubs of America has been at GHS for the past 5 years and is becoming more active each year. DECA allows the student to develop in the business world, and to accept the op- portunities offered to him.
