Dail Practice ot Enough or oph Team As with the varsity swimming team, the Tartan sophomore team lost a great deal of precious practice time, due to the breakdown in the pool system. This accounted for the team not achieving as well as expected. GHS sophomore swimmers managed to put in three and a half hours of intense practice daily. This helped them, as well as the varsity swimmers, to finish fourth in the Sierra League Championship. Outstanding sophomore swimmers were Brian Hampton and Rob Morris. To sum up the swimming season at GHS, Head Coach Kane Waggoner stated, We had excellent drops in times. All the boys gave tremendous swims. They all did excellently. l. Sophomore swimmers dive for a first place start in a meet against Los Altos. 2. Swimmers pause between races for nutrition. Show Brooks, Steve Varsity Tennis Team rows in Strength This was a year for tennis at Glendora High. and the varsity team is good proof of it. Having smashed traditional heavyweight Sierra League's South Hills. Clendora went on to lose only one mateh to Los Altos. Very proud of this lat-t. Coaeh john Saunders boasts that this is the best team Glendora has had in the last three or four years. We haye a great team this yearf' stated Mr. Saunders. Were well hal- aneed and we have good depth. Neither the singles or douhles earries the other. Eaeh does a part to help make the winning team we hayef' Aiding Mr. Saunders in eoaehing this year was Jamie Barragan, a for- mer Day is Cup winner from Mexico. and Scott Nagel, the ,IV eoaeh. CIF rules this year stated that no girls eould play' on the varsity team pro- y iding that a separate team was offered to them. However. Lea Antonoplis, the only girl on this yearis team was allowed to play heeause she started hefore the rule was adopted. This is Lea's third year in high sehool tennis. Not many people understand how a tennis mateh is played. There are eight yarsity players who play in a mateh. They make up two double teams and four singles. When the team has a mateh each of the four singles play the other teamis singles. This makes a total of 16 games with one point for eaeh win. The two doubles teams then play the opponent. There is a total ol 12 points for those four games. You need at least 14W points to win a mateh. This is ealled a round rohin. Bet-ause the team has eonsistently' grown in strength in the last few years lhereis a high hope that next year's team ean go all the way' to the CIF play off S.
