Tartans Experience New Coach, New Plays End Season 3-4 in Sierra League Competition This year, the Tartans experienced a new head coach. Bryan Shaw, who at one time played defensive hack at Long Beach State University. With four years experience as the Tartans' defensive coach, Shaw came to the team prepared and used a variety in the style of play. The team used more than just one type of defense this year and included the 'T' formation in their offensive patterns. ' A new type of honor was added to this year's squad instituted hy' Coach Shaw, the Tartan Clan. The Clan exemplifies the dedication, leaders ship and spirit of the young men for the Big Red Machine. Qualifications for this honor were: senior status, dedication and discipline. This years Clan included John Adams, Jon Acosla, Dave Haney, Jim Marks and Brent Duncan. EDCEWOOD ln a 111--6 Tartan win oyer Edgewood. senior Steve Hunt led the team in rushing with 70 yards. ,lunior Jeff Mowdy rushed for 60 yards. Quarterback Ken Ericksen completed eight for 15 for 118 yards. Dave Kirby caught four of those passes for 80 yards. LOS ALTOS Clendora suffered their first league loss to Los Altos 24-14. We played excellently Shaw said. They just got the hreaks and we didn't.'i he added. Quarterhack Ken Ericksen who was injured during the game. was replaced lay' Kevin Sampson. Steve Hunt also sustained injuries during that game. Long runs hy hoth Ericksen and ,Ieff Mowdy were the only' Tartan touchdowns. LA PUENTE The Tartans heat the La Puente Warriors 19-13. The defense held La Puente to 64- yards and only three first downs. Senior Marks ran hack the opening kickoff 98 yards. Quarterback Eriksen rushed and passed for a total of 170 yards. He completed eight out of 12 passes for 129 yards. Kirby caught six for 84 yards. and Mowdy rushed for 109 yards. WILSON ln thc Wilson game. the Tartans started out slowly hut came hack with strength in the second half and heat the Wildcats 22-14. Rushing was led hy' Mowdy with a 109 yards. Kirhy and Kevin Prestesater led the team in receptions with three a piece. SOUTH Hll.l.S t The 311-7 loss to South Hills, came as a disappointment to the Tartan machine. We didn'l cy cn play' foothallf' commented a disappointed Coach Shaw after the game. W FST COVINA Defense was the tcaniis main downfall in the game against West Coy ina. Mowdy led the team in rushing with 31 yards. Kirhy' led the team in receptions with six catches. ' COYINA liirlty caught five passes for 86 yards in the 26-7 win oyer the Coy ina Colts. Hunt carried the hall 15 times for 82 yards. Eriksen was 7-14 for 100 yards. Kevin Sampson, junior. went two-for-two on defense. . V V Although the Tartans encountered many set hacks and did not have the opportunity' to go to CIF competition, the team experienced a good season under a new coach. One school record was lirokcn this season hy Dayc Kirlty who recorded 43 receptions, breaking the previous record hy nine. The team did hetter than eycryliody expected.
