Howd Week Welcomes Back Tartan loan Howdy Week welcomed back stu- dents with new and old activities. The activities were held during lunch and were participated in by all grades. The week started with the tug-o-war and was won by the sophomores QD QZJ. The banana split eating contest involved both girls and guys from every class 161. The girls from each class prepared the banana splits and the guys raced to finish eating the gooey mess. The fast- est banana split makers and eaters were from the senior class. The juniorhgirls were awarded the most creative banana split makers award. The rainy weather canceled the Volkswagen pushing race and due to the lack of participation, the pass the chick activity was canceled also. The week ended with the Howdy Assembly 1110 and the announcement of the varsity football players. New Ameri- can Field Service students, Mikko Talsi Q51 from Finland and Suzanna Georgiou Q35 from Cyprus, were also introduced. Pep club, band and drill team added spirit to the assembly. Friday night, at the Howdy Hop, Linda Kemby and Steve Hunt 171 were crowned King and Queen of Howdy Week. Seniors Kathy Kemby, Janet Favero, John Adamsg juniors Kendra Mastain fRob Hilliard and Jeff Mowdy not picturedj and sophomores Mike Sapp, Carolyn Beck, Alane Daugh- erty fPat Patterson not picturedj Q85 were also nominated to the court for their friendliness and outgoing person- alities. Enthusiastic students packed the gym to hear the band scheduled to play for the Homecoming Dance. The Whizz Kids' rowdy music really got people excited about going to the dancef, com- mented Gina Matlock, senior. Brent Duncan, Jim DeViney, and Mark Haynes led the seniors to victory in the beer drinking contest on Monday. Each class competed by guzz- ling root beer in an effort to be the first ones finished. Two juniors, George Francescon and Art Pasimio Q31 won the Comet Catch, a one-handed egg toss, on Wednesday. Grand Marshalls Cal Bates and Webb Detwiler, honored for their ser- vices to the community, led the Home- coming Parade down Clendora Avenue on Thursday. Key Club designed the winning float with the Junior Class Q61 taking second and Choir, third. Kathy Smith announced the win- ning floats and presented the Home- coming Court at Fridayis assembly. The band accompanied the Pep Club Q11 as they did special routines and The Drill Team leaders performed the sword dance to Scotland the Bravef, For the first time in several years, the banner carriers marched into the dark gym with lighted banners as the Tartans cheered them on. Friday nightis pregame included a parade of the floats Q51 and Homecom- ing princesses around the Citrus Sta- dium track.
