This year Glendora High School was host to three foreign exchange students. The American Field Service sponsored two stu- dents Suzanna Georgiou from Cyprus and Mikko Talsi from Finland. Interna- tional Cultural Exchange brought to GHS Maria Placencia from Ecuador. Our friends from afar express differences in many situations, including school spirit and boy-girl relationships. HOW DO YOU COMPARE GHS' SCHOOL SPIRIT TO YOUR HOME SCHOOL? Suzanna: ln Cyprus the school keeps stu- dents so busy withytheir classes that they donit have time for anything else. The clubs are run by teachers and they don't organize activities out of school. The students con- centrategmostly on classes-and don't have time for fun. The students in Europe seem more intelligent and serious than students in Americaf' p Y Mikko: ln Finland the schools academi- cally are perhaps somewhat harder. We concentrate more to science, math and lan- guage more than you do here. The school spirit of GHS is a lot better than in Fin- landf, . Maria: l am really excited about the school spirit of GHS. l enjoy so much the pep assemblies where everybody gets excited about winning the games. In Ecua- dor, my school is really a lot harder aca- demically. We have to take about 16 sub- jects a yearlw p i Serious boy-girl relationships ar few because of the group dating in Cyprus, Fin- land and Ecuador. Y HOW DO YOU COMPARE THE DATING SITUATION IN YOUR COUNTRY TO THAT OF AMERICA? Suzanna: The dating situation in my country is quite different. Most of the boys and girls go out in groups. This is because the people in Cyprus have limited percep- tions and they misunderstand if they see a boy and girl kiss each other on the street or at school. Mikko: Teenagers donit date as much as you do here. They usually meet each other at parties, which are held on the week- endsf, Maria: Since there are only about 30 stu- dents in each grade, most of the activities, the parties, the dinners, and the dances usually include the whole class. All three students expressed how happy they were to be attending GHS and the Tar- tans are just as happy to be their hosts. AFS X ICX 139
