.I El. Spring Music Groups Keep Actwe Concert Band, Orchestra and Wind Ensemble provide a backing in technical and classical music that the students need to round out their knowledge of music, commented Mr. Briscoe. Both groups begin second semester when marching band ends. The season started on February 5 when the band, along with the drill team, performed their Band-O-Rama show for the telephone company. This was followed in March by the Cala Festival. The band and orchestra, along with the junior high bands and orchestras perform the music they will play at festival late in March. The band received a superior for the nineteenth consecutive season. Two major events were planned for the late spring. The band and orches- tra traditionally perform at a spring concert. Also planned were two concerts at the junior highs by the band. The band played at a convention at the Hotel f' 4- 'e v 1 -1 71.12. Y Y ..-1 V .,,, ,. ,.- Bonaventure in April. They were invited to play at Disneyland. Solo and ensemble festival was held in May. This gives students a chance to perform in front ofjudges then receive a rating. This was the first year that orchestra was offered as a night class. This opened it up to adults and alumni who wished to participate. The orchestra didn't go to festival this year. Also offered as night classes were wind ensemble and music theory. Music theory contains the written aspects of music. while wind ensemble involved mostly the band section leaders and more advanced musicians. The year ended when the juniors and sophomores of the concert band took over to play Pomp and Circumstancei' at this year's graduation cere- monies. . .LFE ll.. 454 Banners Carry Tartan Trademark MG0 Reef? Majorettes Add Pep to Hawime Shows Head banner carrier Cathy McDougall exclaimed, This is the best year in banners I,ve ever had! We had a great time, and I think most of the banners will agree. It seems that the banners enjoyed their job immensely. Out in front of the band in all parades, half time shows, and pep assemblies, the Glen- dora High School banner girls displayed great school spirit, as well as the UGLENDORAH trademark and the famous Tartan yell, Go Redf, The banners carry heavy, metal signs, specially equipped with operational lights in order to make the letters lumines- cent. To sum up the unceasing spirit of the girls, Andy Poll- man, banner, said, Being a banner was a challenging, but terrific experience. We had some rough times, but if I wasnlt a senior this year, l'd go through it all over again. I loved it!', Majorettes Sandy Craft and Janet Tolosa, head, added extra pep to half time shows as well as practices. Since the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association rules provide for only three or more majorettes in competition, the two GHS majorettes could not participate. Still, the oppor- tunity of being able to take part in practices and half time shows proved both Sandy and Janet to be very competitive and responsible. Aside from the lengthy demanding after school practices, parades and band competitions which Sandy and Janet both attended, they still found time for social activities and school work. In Sandyls words, Sometimes it was pretty hard, but in the end, everything was worth it.', 1. The Banners introduce the band to residents of Santa Monica during a competition. 2. Pep and Stage Band Keep Spirit Going This year's Stage Band and Pep Band kept spirit going, long into the second semester. Consisting mainly of juniors and sophomores, the pep band played at all home QD and away football games. The group played at home basketball games Q21 and all pep assemblies. Wlienever Tartans heard Scotland the Brave, the fight song, the Alma Mater or Bud- wiser they could be sure it was the pep band playing. This was the first year in a long time that the pep band has really been active in school activities. Often more than 60 stu- dents would show up for a performance. It was great working with the band for a change, H n 'aa-4--qv. ' V wh L. '- 1 Q ji'- - K L 1 A . 5 ., ' fy - r W ' V' -1 x ,e 1 1 xy A Q I- , , . N- - in ' ' ' X ' 5134...- g-- . - x ' Q! .
