W Drill Team Per orms in Parczdes, Halftimes The Plaid Piper Drill Team began their seventeenth compe- titive season this year with a returning friend, Mrs. Jean Bradley, their advisor. After a two year break Mrs. Bradley returned to help the drill team maintain the standards that haxe been set by tradition. The Drill Team started a busy year by performing at the Azusa Colden Days Parade. That was followed by a trip to Long Beat-h where they placed second in their class at the Col- ton Review. The Drill Team also marched in the Chino and Santa Moniea Parades where they received two First Place tro- pliies. Sue Cofield, head, proved to be an above average leader when she plat-ed first in the Drill Team Head Competition at Santa lVloniea. l really lil-ge working with the girls. lt's been a fun yearf' said Sue Cofield. The Drill Team was invited for a special treat to perform with Dr. Ken Caldwell's band at El Camino College in Tor- rance on October 30. Anyone who watched the Drill Team during a half time show this year noticed something different. At the end of each show the girls would carry 41-8 historic flags down field. These were the same flags donated to the Drill Team for their Seol- land Show. A very successful year was completed when the Drill Team performed in the Annual Band-O-Rama in January. 1. 9 - Year of flange for Tartan Band t'The hiring of Mr. John Briscoe, as director. was the start of a year change for the Tartan Marching Band. The first major change was in e marching and music styles. This year's music represented a larger iriety of styles and tunes. This was welcomed greatly by students and mectators alike. The change in marching, however. turned out to be asuccessful so, in October, the band returned to the traditional way of . arching. The band started their season this year by taking a first place at the -zusa Golden Days Parade. Before the season was over the band had .arched in the Chino Review, the Santa Monica tlj and West Arcadia Jmpetitions, the All Western in Long Beach, Glendora's Homecoming arade and the West Covina and Glendora Christmas Parades. They so performed at the Colton and Los Altos Halftime Tournaments, not 1 mention four halftime shows. This was the first time in many years The drummers spent the year experimenting with new cadences and modifications on the traditional ones. They competed in the West Arca- dia and West Covina Drum Field competitions and with the help of Don Clarke, a drum arranger from Long Beach, they took first place at the Santa Monica Parade. We've had a good year, without any major problems, commented section leader Bob Curtis, senior. Another change this year was drum major Brad Schneider 121. This was the first time in three years a junior has held such an honored position. Brad led the band in all parades and halftime shows this year. He took third place at Azusa and West Arcadia and first place at Santa Monica and West Covina. This has been a good year with a lot of mutual growth between the band and myselff, exclaimed Mr. Briscoe. There are a lot of good peo- ple in Glendora that I have enjoyed working with and I am glad I was able to come into a school with such a high emphasis on music and good lat the band performed a different show at each halftime. standards. On January 1, the band marched in the 88th Tournament of Roses Parade. This was the first time since 1972 the group appeared in the kasadena parade.
