Competition included such events as pushing a peanut with their noses and moving a ping pong ball down the basketball court by blowing through a straw. Their escapades seemed to be enjoyed by many in the audience, parents and students alike. 1. NN.fy , ws Dances Gain tl xv ,vw .24 , ..1,h5,l. If Popularit Y K A is 'F' Dances seemed to become a more and more important part of students' lives this year. About 150 students danced beside hay bales and pumpkins at the newly begun Harvest Dance. Held in November during regular harvest time, the dance featured D1 Ron Foster from KRUX who played mostly country and disco music. According to student senators the senior class has planned to make the Harvest Dance a new tradition at Glendale. .l M ! Students exchange cultures Q .xt :rs S N . 1: N Q. as .. The smiles in these pictures are the foreign exchange students for this year. Both lzabella and Sergio are here with an organization that allows high school students to go to another country for a year of school. Both students enjoy Arizona and feel the people here are friendly and very helpful. lzabella Pieniazek or Bella as she is called, is from Sweden. Here at Glendale she is involved in chorus, Lyres Club, flag corps, volleyball, and the ishbeck organization. She says she is really happy to be in the marching band. Performing with that group is new and interesting because there aren't things like that in Sweden. 9. i F' Lzrw 'k,w in 4 ' in wisiiff l 51 ipgt 4 y wi ggi, az , W., Q4 fi 454' W W Q, f af 'lf' ,i . , .Q Swedish and American schools are very different. In Sweden students have weekly schedules and there is homework almost every night. Bella's last year there, she had 17 required subjects. On the prospect of leaving Glendale to return home this summer, Bella says, l've made many friends, who will be hard to leave. Sergio Vergare is 16 years old and is here from Santiago, Chile. He enrolled here at the beginning of second semester. His favorite sport is skiing. ln Chile the students must wear uniforms everyday. Another difference is the teachers go to your class instead of the students moving from class to class. Chile also has different subjects everyday and the hours are also different. The girls gave it their all, but that was not enough. According to Coach Myra Andersohnn, even if all of the girls had placed first in their events, they still could not have won a meet. The team was just not large enough to field each of the events. However, great skill was shown by Annette Cones and April Cox when the swim team sent them to the state finals. GLENDALE H s o G TULA W N N P co Tis W T F LUSTS lnexperience Explains Record Lack of experience was the key phrase in explaining the 2-6 season record for the varsity badminton team. Although the team of six boasted the presence of two four-year veterans, Terri Kanemura and Suzanne Biallas, and one three-year veterans, Teresa Hollister, the remaining three team members had a year or less actual game experience.- To help train the inexperienced players, Coach Gallegos enlisted the help of two college students, both badminton players themselves. Liz Meyers, an ASU senior and Marry Mullen, NAU senior, volunteered to help the less experienced members and specialize with the more advanced players to get them ready for division playoffs. Terri Kanemura and Suzanne Biallas made up the No. 1 doubles team going to Divisions and Lori Biallas and Teresa Hollister went as Glendale's entries in the singles competition. At the awards banquet Most Valuable Player honors went to Teresa Hollister and Most Dedicated award was given to Terri Kanemura. Varsity Badminton: T. Kanemura, C. Lindauer, S. Biallas, L. With this being Coach Carl's first year as head coach, he did a tremendous job, formin a squad of strong hitters and hard-throwing pitchers. If they keelp on playing' like they did earlier in t e season, t ere were hopes of the team going to the state playoffs for the first time since 1956. Varsity Baseball - Row 1: T. Lee, C. Medina, M.
