At the student mixer, a few freshmen were illegally initiated. It wasn't until late October, though, that the officers were elected. But even though they had no officially elected officers, they organized and built a Homecoming float. As for getting into the swing of high school life, quite a few freshmen are in band, GAA, Pep Club, tennis, football, and all varieties of language and special interest clubs. This summer, an orientation program was sponsored for the benefit of the freshmen. Quite a few turned out for it. After a week of getting acquainted with GHS, they came back for four weeks in a reading improvement program. They went on field trips to the steam plant by the Salt River Project, the Coca- Cola bottling company, a trip to Flag- staff, and had the opportunity to talk to America's Junior Miss, Karen Sten- wall, a '70 graduate of Sunnyslope High School. As the usual fund-raiser, the freshmen class dance was successful as far as dances go. It seems likely to say that from the looks of things, the freshman class can look forward to a pretty good sophomore year.
