The 1966 CARDINAL staff, the faculty, and the student body of Glendale High 6 School wish to welcome Mr. John Irwin as the new principal of Glendale High. It is not easy for a new principal to adjust to the set ways of an old, and tradition-filled school, but Mr. Irwin has done an admirable job of adjusting. With his warm personality and fast-paced ideas and programs, he has had no trouble in gaining the respect and friendship of the students and faculty alike. The future of Glendale High School looks good,'and with Mr. Irwin at the controls, its success is assured. r. Irwin "The 1966 CARDINAL will be a source of pleasure for you now and in the years to come. It will be a way for you to recall the friendships, the activities, and the ac- complishments in your school for 1965-66. For many students, especially seniors, it will be a means to see the changes that have taken place. These changes in buildings, programs, and staff are important but not as important as the individual changes in students going on constantly. Hopefully, Glendale High is here to give each of you a chance to know and to under- stand yourself and then use this knowledge to change and to grow. As you are enjoying this fine annual, ask yourself if you are using or have used Glendale High for the most desirable changes and growth in you." 4 Table Of Contents Administration And Faeulty 8 Classes 22 Seniors 25 Juniors 80 Sophomores 1011+ Freshmen 122 Honorees 136 Royalty 146 Activities 154 Athletics 162 Clubs 202 Index 240 Advertisements 248 ...--nxsf-F . . - ,-,-.,. H- Education Involves 3 .A ,lf O O O 4 anual kill s Well As Qx ,V Intellectual Skill i Astronauts must use many different tools and instruments to insure a safe and successful flight. The laser beam is a modern innovation which can be used to cut or burn through hard substances. It is only one of the various new discoveries which may some day play an im- portant part in space flight and exploration. High school students also need instruments and tools to help them study harder and learn more. Drafting and carpentry tools are used- in a class where skill and careful planning work to- gether to create better and more perfect re- sults. Still, the greatest tools that either astronauts or students can use are clear thinking and an alert mind. Without these basic essentials, neither a flight in space nor a high school education can be successful. ,A A .t Y, , -f s'4fxM11.z, i ' -,aa .ai i A Successful Future - In Space And On Earth - Requires Training 3, , One of the important facets of a high-school educa- tion is the physical training taught to the students. Whether it is weightlifting, doing push-ups, or gym- nastics, the result is the same-improved physical well- being. You might agree that the astronauts should under- go physical training, but why you as a high school stu- dent. It's true that this is an age of advanced learning, in which intellectual knowledge receives top priorityg but it is also an age that is so accelerated that you must be in good physical condition to keep pace. 7 EJIE1137 FJUDDID ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY A well-organized school, as well as a space flight, needs a capable leade1 to co-ordinate all plans and IHHIICLIVCIS To the Students of Glendale High School 'The members of the administrative staff feel that the 1965-66 school year has been successful. We hope that you, the students at Glendale High School, feel the same. I To those of you who are seniors, remember that you have just completed the first major step in your educa- tion. Whether or not you plan to continue formal educa- tion, you must continue to educate yourselves by keeping well informed on the local, national, and international scenes. To the underclassmen, I wish to say that the students of the past have built the fine reputation which you enjoy at Glendale High School. You, through your contribution, will maintain and build the reputation of the future. We congratulate you on another successful year at Glendale High School!" 4 W MR. HOWARD T. JOHN IRWIN Principal 53 "If a principal can aid the students in realizing that they are individuals of great worth in the school and community, then he has accomplished a great dealf, states Mr. Irwin. This is the statement of a man who is always striving to discover how to achieve this goal. NA school will only be as great as the students at- tending it make it. Students may accomplish this goal, and in turn receive personal satisfaction, by both taking from the school and through contri- butions to it. By taking from the school I refer to knowledge gained and high grades received through individual effort. By contributions to your school I refer to student participation in the many activities offeredf' declares Mr. Christensen. To the seniors, Mr. Richardson says, "May you use the fine attitudes and habits developed at GHS over the past years to achieve the goals which you desire." The'Freshmen have succeeded in getting off the ground in their first year of high school. They used a lighter-than-air craft, a primitive, gas-filled balloon. Although this may seem to be a very elementary step in flight progress, it is this first year, and this first flight, which will guide them to seek higher ideals and goals in the years to come. The Sophomores are in a class by themselves. In their second year of high school, they have conquered their fear of heights and learned to soar into the blue with skill and confidence. Even though they have not yet reached the rocket propulsion level of upperclassmanship, they will soon abandon their propeller-operated planes and take that big step into the future tobecome the members of the jet set. The Juniors have reached the jet age and are now rapidly approaching the day when they will prepare for rocket flight. They are in a high form of flight experience and advancement, and next year they will take a leading role in our high school activities. The members of the class of 1967 are examples of the flyers who are now ready for the rocket training program of advanced learning, which the Seniors have encountered. The Seniors are preparing to blast off from the launching pad of graduation and rocket to the not-so-distant worlds of college, military service, job training, and adult responsibility. They have gone through four years of extensive training and study to prepare themselves for this, the greatest moment of their lives. They must make only their final preparations during the countdown of the few weeks left to blast-off time. The information and experience which the graduating students of 1966 have gathered during their high school career will be put to good use as they become the leaders of tomorrow's society. After their lift-off, these graduating seniors will leave the world of high school and climb to the stars of future life. I gained a lot of new, exciting and necessary views about America, and I can tell, that I just love it with its people, the desert and the new discoveries I may have every day. I hope, that after I am gone, your picture and impression I have given you about Switzerland will stay with you. IS7 Dance, Dance, Dance . . . 4 1 l58 Cardinals Picked To Make Film Lights, camera, action . .. This year the stu- dents and faculty of Glendale High School were greatly honored by having their football team chosen to be the "actors" in a very important film, The film concerns the many football rules and regulations and will be shown across the nation. Our team worked long hours filming different plays and football situations which were contained in the film. The student body was also given a chance to perform, and they added an extra touch of realism as they cheered from the stands. The credit for this filming honor goes to the successful GHS football team of 1965. vc i?:::gT5f?Vf I .,f,, ,. . J ,,t,. We . 55.1.1 ,, T lk-I-ll-Q d.nlLaLo A fight ensues as these two men fight over "their girl". The Great Big Doorstep A story of a poor family, this play was a challenge for the actors to convince them- selves that it was hot and muggy while they were very cold. The stage crew worked many hours to make the set come to life. Many live plants were used, including a 700 pound orange tree. Mike Wagenfehr por- trayed the commodore with Jane Bills as his wife. Other members of the family included Portia Allen, Andrew Allison, Bar- bara Conyard, Ruth Allen and Ginger Foglesong the latter two being grade school students. Our wonderful director, Mr. Cox, spent many hours on both the acting and the set design, producing a very good show. As the fight continues, one man lets the other know who is boss. i "That ole foot still white like a quail leg." The King and I is one of the most famous musicals produced by Rodgers and Hammerstein. The story presents the dramatic and comical conflicts be- tween the strong-willed school teach- er and the revered King of Siam. The counter-plot of the play is a romance between Tuptim, a Burmese slave girl who is a gift to the King, and Lun- Tha, an ambassador from Burma. I GHS Thespians presented this play on March 30, 31, April 1, and 2. The cast consisted of more than a hundred students. The leading characters, Anna and the King, were played by .lenny Krueger and Frank Gericke. Other parts include Gary Naylor as Lun-Tha, Cydne Pidgeon as Tuptim, and Lois N y , - , Reedy as Lady Thiang. l6I . ,f.Qb E 9 1 A K '5',?"ff'5!?
